Shannon Watts: When Mass Shooters Are White Men, Why Are We Told Gun Laws Won’t Work?

Shannon Watts (above left) is the founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a wholly owned subsidiary of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s (above right) Everytown for Gun Safety. While Ms. Watts has maintained something of a low profile over the last few months, there’s nothing like a mass shooting to bring out the doyenne of disarmament. In a post Sutherland Springs slaughter article for elle.com, Ms. Watts plays the race card . . .

After acts of terrorism that don’t involve guns, there are calls to tighten laws. But when it comes to mass shootings like Sutherland Springs, which are most often perpetrated by white men, we’re told that strengthening our gun laws just won’t work. Instead, we get the tired trope of thoughts and prayers. But if thoughts and prayers alone were enough to prevent gun violence, Americans wouldn’t get shot in our places of worship.

Ms. Watts is implying that gun rights advocates block “sensible gun reform” (or whatever she’s calling gun control these days) to protect white privilege. That gun rights advocates are inherently and secretly racist. That the white Powers That Be would support gun control if the mass shooters were black. Or if they themselves were black. Or something.

Hang on. What does a spree killer’s ethnicity have to do with anything? In fact, isn’t it racist to suggest that it does? If I were to write that a larger percentage of America’s black population commit firearms-related crimes than the country’s caucasian population, I have a feeling I’d be called a racist. So I won’t.

But the point remains: Ms. Watts is an anti-gun rights social justice warrior, an agitprop agitator who tries to stimulate white guilt to forward her statist agenda. One who doesn’t want anything to do with the facts.

For example, statista.com discovered that white people committed just over half of all the mass shootings in the U.S. between 1982 and 2017.

That stat doesn’t directly contradict Ms. Watt’s implication that a white “power elite” is blocking gun control because it doesn’t care when white people shoot a lot of people. But it does take some of the wind out of the wind bag’s sails. Doesn’t it?

  1. Obviously Sutherland Springs and Mandalay Bay wouldn’t have happened if the perpetrators didn’t have bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, or collapsible stocks on their rifles.

    • Exactly. We’re against gun control laws because they always punish the innocent and law-abiding, while also doing virtually nothing to prevent criminal violence.

People of the Gun said the same thing after Fort Hood (Arabic), Virginia Tech (Asian), the Navy Yard (black), the Florida airport (Hispanic), the Pulse (Hispanic), and those are only the recent top-of-mind examples.

And we’ll keep saying it. The only people who are applying bigoted thinking to this question are the gun-controllers.

  2. Mass shootings are by white men? How about the mass shooting currently going on in Chicago, 580 victims just this year? Black shooters, black victims, where are these “white men” you speak of?

  3. I have to raise the “fail” flag on this article, RF! While you referred to the AWB in ’95 being pushed after the Luby’s shooting, it should be required to add “in which no assault weapon was involved, killer used handguns.”

Never let a crisis go to waste.

  4. Quite often, firearms owners are their own worst enemies. The duck hunters don’t like the AR-15 “black rifles” so they see no problem if attempts are made to ban them. The traditional rifle owners don’t like machine guns, so they have no problem with them being legislated out of existence. Some pistol owners see nothing wrong with certain long guns being outlawed just as some rifle owners would have no problem seeing pistols banned.
Friends, ALL firearms advocates must “hang together” and realize that an assault on ANY means of firearms ownership and self-defense is an assault on ALL forms of firearms ownership and self-defense.
There is absolutely NO ROOM for complacency among ANY Second Amendment supporters. An attack on one is an attack on ALL…
ALL firearms laws are unconstitutional on their face. Imagine the hue and cry if “reasonable” restrictions were placed on First Amendment activities, especially with the “mainstream media”. The Second Amendment is clear–what part of “shall not be infringed” do politicians and the media not understand…of course, they understand full well…it’s part of their communist agenda…

  5. Our thoughts and prayers are for respect, for the hope to get along with others, the guidance to make this place a better world to live in and to have the patience to deal with people like Mrs. Watts.

Our thoughts are with the victims and our prayers are our conversations and connection between us and Him.

If I could pray and stop mass shootings then I would be praying for it several times a day, every day. That’s not how prayer works, you don’t just get what you pray for or we’d all be a lot more religious.

This condescending attitude against prayer and Christianity after this tragedy is highly disrespectful and is not winning over anyone. Believe in it or don’t, but don’t criticize it, and if you are, at least be a little consistent, because even when a tragedy is steeped in terror in the name of Islam you certainly have nothing to say against those thoughts and prayers.

And yes, we do ask to tighten laws after terror attacks because it’s clear that we could have stopped it with certain laws. We don’t ask for gun control because for one, the existing laws failed, and for two, guns are a right, enshrined in the Bill of Rights, coming to this country is not a right, nor should it be: it’s a privilege and we have every right to restrict it as much as we damn well please if we don’t want you and you don’t meet our criteria.

  6. One guy I know swears by a nice heavy AR-10 in .243, shooting from a stand. He says he could only very, very rarely get multiple pigs offhand, but can routinely get 4 or 5 this way. Distance is key as well, he prefers at least 150 yard shots, says it sometimes takes just a second longer to scatter. Silencer would probably suit him but he can’t be arsed.

  7. Darn. I was hoping someone would summarize the list in the comments so i wouldn’t have to watch the video. I guess i will never know what rifles made the list

  8. From what I read in MilitaryTimes.com, this opinionated POS was immediately rebuked by Sen McCain after he made his anti-gun rant at the hearing, and was told that he was outside his area of competence. So apparently his opinion was nipped in the bud, but he got his headline.

  9. This is your brain on feminism. Good job ladies, you destroy an entire generation of men and then complain when some of them go batshit insane. Have fun living to a ripe old age in a house full of cats. As with most things, technology marches on, pretty soon, the female of the species will be functionally obsolete.

  11. So the ACLU wants to be the Tenth Amendment Center, which by the way can count to 10 without skipping any digits.

And I would say that no one should need to carry a weapon ANYWHERE, but there is evil in the world and we have the right to defend ourselves. The chances of needing to use a gun for self defense is next to nothing if you stay away from stupid people doing stupid things, but sometimes those stupid people cross paths with you and you may need to defend yourself, even in a church. This fool was proven wrong before he even wrote this drivel down.

  12. “Insane” to trust citizens with the capability to protect themselves effectively. He doesn’t think much of us, does he? Somehow, I keep recalling the 5 ways anti-gunners hate you.
    – You are not to be trusted with anything so dangerous. (You are an idiot.)
    – You aren’t worth protecting. (You are literally worthless, so vs. their lives or feels expendable.)
    – This isn’t how we do things. (It’s the system, stupid. Everything not compulsory is forbidden.)
    – You are no one to decide what’s better or worse. (We, meaning you, have them for that.)
    – No agency for you! (So, no guns, obvs.)

However benevolent they claim to be, farms aren’t run for the benefit of the cattle.

  13. “I am a conservative and a defender of the 2nd Amendment right to own weapons”
“Packing in church, however, is not one of those cases.”

Ask one of the survivors in the Texas church if they agree with you. The killer walked aisle by aisle executing people including children. Pretty sad you would not want to give them a chance to survive. Oh, and you are no defender of the Second Amendment which speaks of not just owning (keep) arms, but also bearing arms.

  14. Shoot first ask questions later and go for Qualified Immunity. I support good cops. I don’t support Bad cops. There is no situation that is so bad that a cop can’t make it worse. Unfortunately, cops protect cops. That makes them (most) Bad cops. Many come from the Military. War mind set. And, the Training they receive is Aggressive. Do you remember the cases where one cops arrested another cop for an offense and the arresting cop was trashed over and over again? My dream jobs: To be a cop on cops. A Judge on Judges and the one that makes the rules/laws that Politicians have to follow or go to Jail. Those rules/laws would be the same ones we have to follow now. Just join the Institute for Justice e-mail and read case after case of the Government overstepping and cops not being prosecuted for crimes we would go to jail for.

  15. So half of the murders are committed by Non-Whites!

    That seems so….. average.

And what do you mean “you people” and “white people”
    Racist old bitty.

  18. The AR-15 is not an assault weapon it is a civilian self defense rifle……and by calling for an assault weapon ban you are giving the anti gunners the argument they need to ban semi auto pistols. How? They say we need to ban Assault rifles because they can kill a lot of people at one go. Leaving aside the fact that knives were used to murder 1,604 people in 2015, and over 1,500 people every single year…the anti gunners will get the AR-15, and then use the exact same argument to get semi auto pistols after the next mass shooting. Why? This guy murdered 26…..the Virginia Tech shooter murdered 32, with 2 semi auto pistols…and having given in to the argument against AR-15s you have no ground to defend semi auto pistols which can kill just as many people. And the anti gunners know this.

  19. Can I stir the pot a little and suggest perhaps the lowly 12 gauge could have served well in such a scenario? While not immediately fatal a controlled pair of 00 Buck to the pelvic girdle and/or legs is a solid recipe for immobilization and a partial solution to circumnavigate body armor.

Or am I completely wrong here?

I bring it up because my 590A1 loaded with #4 buck, and several side saddles of Federal Flitecontrol 00 Buck & slugs is my go to long gun and load out.

  20. That the FBI supervisor let a hooker steal his gun is laughable. That she took all but $60 in her fee and then took it as well is laughable. The $6,000 Rolex is not laughable. My deceased father was a fed.gov employee and he wore a Timex. Applying the standard that is applied to gun owners by the Clinton/Pelosi etc. contingent, this guy is without a doubt on the take. No further proof is needed. Although he probably is on the take. And won’t be arrested.

  21. Always enjoy JWT’s reviews and observations. However…..

Kinda lost me at “…25 yards was pure luck.” The LGS stopped carrying Kimber at all because Kimbers were returned so often. So, I view Kimber with skepticism anyway. But 25 yards for an “almost pocket gun”? Why would anyone try shooting human sized targets at that distance? If the “threat” is 75 feet away, is it really a threat? Does one really carry a pocket pistol with the idea of just maybe there is a terrorist attack, the shooters are 25 yards away, and taking oneself off the scene is not priority? Actually, even with a full size 1911, is attempting to shoot 25 yards accurately, under stress something that is expected?

Are there better standards for pocket gun acceptability, than the usual drill for full sized firearms?

  22. I debate with pro-gun and anti-gun individuals to prove that the majority of mentally ill should not have their gun rights infringed upon. Most pro- gun individuals will agree and listen to facts, while most anti-gun will agree so they don’t look prejudiced; and then continue demonizing. I also debate to show the audience of a conversation the dangerous argument anti-gun individuals are supporting. They fully believe governments are capable of overcoming human nature to build a utopian future: provided we trust them and stop standing in their way. All of human history proves them wrong. Human nature proves them wrong. Yet like Sisyphus they believe that one more try will get us to the top of hill. In the words of Tim the Enchanter, “Look at the bones!”
