The current President of the United States posted the following on his Facebook page re: his new “smart gun initiative”:
I want to update you on some important progress we’ve made to protect our communities from gun violence. As I said in January, these commonsense steps are not going to prevent every tragedy, but what if they prevented even one? We should be doing everything we can to save lives and spare families the pain and unimaginable loss too many Americans have endured. First, we’ve jumpstarted the development of smart gun technology . . .
Today, many gun injuries and deaths are the result of legal guns that were stolen, misused, or discharged accidentally. As long as we’ve got the technology to prevent a criminal from stealing and using your smartphone, then we should be able to prevent the wrong person from pulling a trigger on a gun. So, my Administration released a plan today to expedite the development of smart gun technology, including by identifying the requirements that smart guns would have to meet in order for law enforcement to purchase and use them effectively – and keep themselves and the public safer in the process.
Second, we’re doing more to make sure that those who are already prohibited from obtaining a firearm can’t get their hands on one. Today, we’re announcing a rule to ensure that federal mental health records about individuals prohibited from buying a gun are reported to the background check system.
Third, the White House will convene state and local elected officials from all 50 states in May to discuss their efforts to prevent gun violence through legislative and executive actions. The goal is to figure out what works on the ground when it comes to keeping our communities safe, and then share those practices.
As long as I’m your president, I will do everything in my power to make our communities safer and keep guns out of the wrong hands. That includes calling on Congress to pass the kinds of commonsense reforms supported by the vast majority of the American people.
Making progress on these issues is how we honor the lives that have been lost by gun violence, and it’s how we leave behind a stronger, more secure nation for our children.

He did say that he wants to research technology that would make smart guns viable for police, which to me would mean just as reliable as modern guns.
Now I’m 100% against government spending any money on something not expressly listed in the Constitution, like scientific research, but if the technology did exist, I’d be all in favor of government agencies buying them instead of traditional guns. And as long as there’s no remote disable capability (which would make them unviable for police, and therefore not meet the criteria), I’d even consider one of my own.
By definition though, a gun controlled by electronics has a remote disable built in. Kids (and adults) are already making microwave guns and low powered EMP pulse guns on youtube. It wouldn’t take long for the criminally minded, and just curious hacker minded types who want to find the fail, to figure out how to disable these, first from up close, and then from a distance, and in some cases, depending on the tech used, hack and disable, or enable as the case may be. They can be hardened against EMP/Microwaves, but there’s a long way to go there. There haven’t even been any truly successful, marketable, reliable handgun models that shoot more than a few rounds without jamming as far as I’ve been able to follow, although I did see some long guns that seemed to work normally, other than needing a ring to activate the trigger mechanism, certainly not hardened against EMP/Microwave or electronic attack. Long way to go, years of R&D & testing. It’ll be shut down in a few months is my best bet. A dog & pony show and a waste of tax payer funds.
This smart gun business is all horseshit. When it gets down to it, there is a round in a chamber and a mechanical system that pushes a firing pin into a primer. a gun can have all the smart technology in the world, but give it anyone with a small amount of mechanical aptitude, and the firing pin can be made to stroke the primer. Thus defeating the whole, supposed, idea.

Getting rid of the first amendment would be worth it if it saved just one life… Freedom is speech makes others angry when they hear something they disagree with and may resort to violence to disagree. Freedom of religion allows for points of difference and after thousands of years of religious conflict people around be safer if they all followed one religion.
Getting rid of the second amendment means you’d have to beat someone to death with your fists out feet surely this sound save some lives.
Get rid of the third amendment and quarter troops in every house in high crime areas and surely you could save at least one life.
Get rid of the fourth and you can search search people and houses whenever you want this dabbing people from certain death.

The hidden agenda here is to force gunmakers to develop the “smart gun” technology (even though no Federal agent would be willing to carry one), thus providing leftist states like NJ, NY, CT and CA the opportunity to pass laws requiring all guns sold and owned in those states to use this technology. Hey, if we can just track all the gun owners in America we can easily round them up later!
Yep, more $$$$$$ for development of ‘guns’ which will never be adopted by police or federal agents. But hey, now that we’ve spent all this money developing these things, we might as well not have them go to waste: time to mandate them for the civilian market!

Thank God that time period is now less than a year. Although given how hard he is pushing the smart gun thing, wouldn’t be surprised all to find out he has a vested interest or some lucrative “consulting” deal with someone who happens to be developing this tech. Want to START a reduction in gun violence Obama? At least have the human decency to do something PRACTICAL.
1. Do more to secure the border. More agents would be a start.
2. Deport any illegal convicted or a felony or who is a member of a gang.
3. Ask Congress to pass laws seeking the death penalty for any illegal who has committed murder within the United States within 60 days of their sentencing.
4. Same rule above should apply to all convicted drug dealers, regardless of citizenship.
