As you’re no doubt aware by now, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership has finally stopped screwing around. For years, they’ve lobbied, ridiculed, harassed and harangued, all in an effort to get guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. Which is pretty much everyone in their view. But now they’re rolling out the big guns. So to speak. They’re using the first anniversary of the Gabby Giffords shooting to organize a nationwide candle-lighting…something. The only question is, does Dennis Henigan have no shame?

Sure, he could have accomplished the same thing with glow sticks. But no. The time for glow sticks has come and gone. Dennis obviously woke up one morning recently, thought about all the guns in private ownership in this country and decided…no more Mr. Nice Guy.

Clearly taking his inspiration from the words of one of the great leaders of history, he decided he couldn’t fight this battle with conventional weapons. After all, that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, Dennis concluded, this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture on somebody’s part. And he’s just the man to do it.

So out come the candles. Except, as triblocal.com informs us, that won’t be without casualties either.

“Fire departments in the United States respond to a fire that was started by a candle every 34 minutes,” said Kevin Wiley, battalion chief with the Oak Park (IL) Fire Department.

We know you’re trying to make a point here, Dennis. But think of the firefighters and their families. And think of all of the other innocent bystanders who are bound to be the victims of senseless candle fires as a direct result of your selfish need to make a statement. And for God’s sake, think of the children.

Candles should remain in the hands of those who are qualified to use them. You – of all people – should know that. And that’s why your reckless disregard for safety in calling for this self-indulgent demonstration has earned you our Irresponsible Protest Organizer of the Day Award.

  1. as we speak packs of candles that can only hold ten are being sold …no more LARGE CAPACITY packs….LOL

    • I doubt that many packs are being sold. One pack could probably cover just about everyone that plans on participating in this empty gesture.

  2. So, the Brady Campaign to Prevent the Free Exercise of Constitutional Rights is now attempting to spin a tragedy into something that bolsters their irrational position? Observe, if you will, my complete lack of surprise.

  3. Will this be a successful campaign? Let me put it this way — I’m not buying any stock in Yankee Candles.

  4. This wouldn’t be a problem if they micro-stamped matches, or sold matches in smaller quantities rather than those high capacity assault boxes.

And don’t even get me started on those clicker-lighters. I mean, really, who needs a lighter?

  5. “does Dennis Henigan have no shame?”

At first glance I thought you were serious, referring to the “dancing in the blood” theme. Then I realized you were trying to be funny again about something very serious. So, never mind.

    • Hundreds of millions of Americans die every year from candle violence Mike. This is no laughing matter. Last year alone over fifty billion humans have been slaughtered by the proliferation of assault candles. All civilization will halt unless we act now. Don’t be a tool of Big Wax. Open your eyes man. Be part of the solution.

  6. Seriously, all this will do is teach children that it’s OK to play with matches! This is so Wrong, on so many levels. Don’t we all have the right to live witout fear of hot wax? When will America wake up, and require the use of only environmentally-sound, rechargeable-battery operated LED non-incandescent candles for our protests? It is clear that Dennis Henigan and the Brady Twits have SOLD OUT to the wax-candle/industrial matches/assault automatic lighters complex. SHAME!!!!!

    • Yeah! Just because those LED lights are dozens of times more expensive, if it saves just one innocent child (or God forbid, a household pet) it will be worth the cost. If the added cost keeps people from participating in the activity, that is just a side benefit.

  7. Oh great, now I have to get a ‘Tactical Candle Holder’ for the pistol.
Something about a light on the end of a pistol….?
Does the NRA have candles with the logo, and what kind of scent?
    Burnt gunpowder?

  8. Where can I get some evil black candles? The Bureau of Really Big Fires just walked all the local ones down to Ol’ Mexico…

  9. This dude is trying to cop out on Chanukkah. Cmon, millions of Americans are already going to be lighting candles in their windows for eight nights in a row and he randomly picks this time of year to light candles? Not cool bro, not cool.
