Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mayor Says Gun Owners Should Be ‘Ashamed’ Of Themselves

Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand speaking amid controversy over remarks about gun owners

The National Rifle Association is calling out the mayor of Michigan’s largest city for his recent disparaging remarks about lawful gun owners.

In a recent news alert, the NRA chronicled how Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand, a first-term Democrat, recently went on a tirade against gun owners. And there’s no doubt he spoke what he really thought because he prefaced  his comments with, “The NRA is going to be mad at me.”

In late February, LaGrand held a community meeting where he was expected to address community policing policies following an officer-involved shooting that is currently under investigation. Instead, he chose to lash out at lawful gun owners, of which there are hundreds of thousands in Grand Rapids and millions throughout the state of Michigan.

“I think if you got a gun, you should be ashamed of yourself,” LaGrand said. “I really do.”

To make sure nobody misunderstood him, he then repeated: “I think if you own a gun, you should be ashamed of yourself. And you should really do some self-reflection.”

He then tried to enlist the community in his shaming party. “As a community, we have to start having some shaming around gun possession,” he said.

Still not finished, LaGrand had to make his thoughts known on how, to him, guns serve no positive purpose.

“No one gardens with a gun,” he said. “No one changes a tire with a gun. What they are for is killing human beings.”

Apparently not content to be finished, comparing gun ownership, which is protected by the Second Amendment, with smoking cigarettes.

“I get that we got a Second Amendment … but you also should be ashamed if you smoke,” he said. “… just like cigarettes, I see so much more harm than benefit.”

Ultimately, as the NRA pointed out, LaGrand’s attack on gun owners was, in fact, an attack on his very own community.

“LaGrand relished saying, ‘The NRA is going to be mad at me,’ oblivious of the fact that the NRA isn’t a monolithic entity in Washington, D.C., but an organization of millions of mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, young and old, in every corner of this country, including in his own community,” the NRA stated in the news alert. “He was mocking them and their deep commitment to the safety and freedoms of their families and their community, first and foremost.”

Like most gun haters who say what they really believe, LaGrand met enough pressure from his comments that he later released a “clarifying” statement trying to dig his way out of his self-dug pit.

“I am fully aware that the Second Amendment and state law limit the policy options available to a municipal leader,” LaGrand said. “I cannot legislate this pain away. Therefore, my comments were not a signal of impending policy.”

    • You expect them to be honest and/or understand math? These are the same people that claim white supremacy is the greatest source of terrorism because they can count arab as white in the statistics to use 9/11.

  1. I am ashamed of myself, I was going to by more guns before last Christmas and I failed.
“The NRA is going to be mad at me.”
I like how these Democrats keep referencing the NRA, it’s almost like they are paid to do advertising.
Is it Pet Smart or is it Pets Mart.
    I want answers.

      • Duly is actually asking a good question. Kind of like Senator Fetterman, he may have an off-kilter perspective on things. It’s okay to hear him out. Once in awhile he hits on a good point.

In this case, he calls out the democrats for always only referencing the NRA, which is STILL arguably the SMALLEST factor in the current battle to not lose our 2nd Amendment rights.

Which tells us that once again, a democrat has no friggin’ idea who the 2A movers really are in the current era. It ain’t the NRA.

  2. I love a good struggle session.

Off topic question for the crowd: Anyone have luck with Warne +3 G19 extensions?

I’m not getting +3, I’m getting +1 and -75% on reliability. At this point unless there’s some trick to these things, I’m going to say they’re hot garbage and whoever made them should be flogged.

C’mon Strych, you shouldn’t even ATTEMPT to fool with “perfection”… it’s sacrilege!

    • Strych, try new or longer mag springs…G19 runs 100% +2s with G17 springs. Same play on G26 and the 19 springs. Not too unreasonable that lengthening the mag tube +3 with the same spring cuts feed potential. Had once considered making longer G17 +2 springs out of 33 rounders, but Springworks Utah advises against that.

      • Was running them on brand new mags, so I assume the springs to be new as well.

If they need longer ones that Warne can take a long walk off a short pier. The +5’s for the G17 come with their own springs for that purpose. Warne claims the +3’s for the 19 don’t require anything other than swapping the baseplate out and removing the floor plate.

Which still doesn’t explain why +3 is only +1.

    • Followers or spring getting bound up on the sidewall on the magazine or other issues? We haven’t seen the ones for the 19 but a few versions/other companies tried for the subcompacts had issues at the range

      • Nope. Just doesn’t add as much as it’s supposed to and reduces the spring power to the point that the pistol sometimes misses grabbing the next round.

If it needs a longer mag spring they should, like, I dunno… tell you that. Or provide it the way they do with other products.

  3. Legislate pain away? He could resign and that would remove the pain. People who shame others are control freaks and suffering from mental illness.

  4. The Mayor is trying to appease the illegal gun owners and street level pharmacist coalition over the death of a illegal gun owner and street level pharmacist.
The Mayor also made a odd statement that if Officer K9 who took down the aspiring pharmacist were his dog he would have him put down.
The mayor is a spineless putz.

  5. Perhaps the mayor should wash some of the sand out of his vagina? What a worthless, effeminate man. Truth is, unarmed “men” should be ashamed of themselves because they cannot defend themselves, much less others, as they were designed to do.

    • Unarmed men are at somewhat of a disadvantage however they can still write letters by using their feet or mouth and seeings how the pen is mightier then the sword maybe they are not as defenseless as you would assume.

The thing is, it won’t work. Except maybe for age demographic, we are as diverse as one could imagine.

Yes, fuah is using tactics against this site. It’s a liberal tactic, and they get training to do it, and some even get paid to do so.

  7. The Mayor of Grand Rapids took an oath to support and defend both the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Michigan. The people in Grand Rapids who voted for him should be ashamed and he should be ashamed for violating that oath.
