“A California man was arrested after authorities discovered the “Super Soaker” water gun he was wearing around his neck had been turned into a working shotgun.” foxnews.com reports. Are there no limits to the lengths people will go to protest California’s open carry laws? Be that as it may, it looks like the Fresno PD has themselves a pretty good intelligence operation. The boys in blue who stopped Randy Smith with this contraption “had been recently briefed on people turning toys into working weapons.” What are the odds? Anyway, Randy used about $30 and a little sticktoitiveness to fashion himself a cute little 20 ga. zip gun. But be warned: “The firearms cartridge with the gun powder is an explosive. The device they’re building has to be able to contain the pressure of that explosion,” (gun store guy Bill) Mayfield told KMPH. “So they’re just relying on, maybe this will hold up. Well, you could be putting a gun next to your head, or you could be putting a hand grenade next to your head.” Words of wisdom, no doubt.

  1. Smith is a convicted felon who has been in and out of prison since ’94. He’s not a patriot protesting Kalifornica’s open carry laws.

  2. As a convict he can’t own a firearm. But you would think there’s plenty of illegal ones around in CA or even in TJ.

  3. No trigger that I can see; must be some sort of “slam-fire” weapon. Kinda cool actually, aside from the fact that the person who made this was probably some sort of criminal.

When will TTAG be reviewing one of these new contraptions? The police said something about a ‘nade and I hear that Leghorn has a thing for those.

    • Article says it was a zip gun–fired usually by a rubberband driven hard object impacting the end of a cartridge.

  4. I fear a complete ban on toy guns will soon be heading to the legislature. That law that made it a requirement for a “neon”-type of color for toy guns is not enough to make us safe.

  5. Actually got a bolo on these type of things last month as an alert to first responders.

  6. The moral of the story is gun control can not work. If a criminal wants a gun, he will get one, even if he has to make it himself.

    MikeB302000, respond to that!

  7. Fresno is one of the worst crime ridden cities in the US and has a year long waiting list for CCW. Def the armpit of California, needs some special help.

      • Sacramento is close behind. On another forum, a member reports two 911 calls and no shows in two weeks by the Sac County Sheriff to burglary calls. On the second one, the dispatcher called him and asked him why he was reporting the burglary if it wasn’t his house!?!?!?
