Defensive Gun Use of the Day: Practice Makes Perfect Edition

Bart and Melissa Ardis of Oakdale, California, had a practiced plan in place should a perp penetrate their perimeter (sorry, that just happened). Read the story at the The Modesto Bee for the full play-by-play of their recent set-to. The short version is that it ended with Melissa yelling at the intruder, “Don’t you dare bleed all over my (expletive) couch!” Don’t you just love to see a plan come together successfully? Great to see some positive editorializing from a newspaper as well. Jeff Jardine, columnist for the Bee, wrapped up the story with, “…they exercised their Second Amendment rights to bear arms and protect their home. They stuck to their plan. They defended themselves in their home, and the only person who got hurt was the one who had no business being there at all.”

  1. Do you carry against the signs? No. I carry a knife, having a gun in my area of SC in a no signs zone is about as stupid as the sign itself.

Do people who carry in off limits give us a bad name? Yes & No. No because its a God given right that should be exercised everywhere. Yes if you display it on purpose in the open for a YouTube video.

  2. I’m glad everything worked out for them. However, the one mistake the husband made was handing his wife his gun when the guy was still outside and the police were not there yet. I expect had they both fired at the intruder (and not the wife going wild west style) when he entered the second time, that probably would have ended it right there.

  3. One thing about this situation. That last shot should have beed a double tap center mass. Bart was being a far nicer guy that that scumbag had any right to expect.

  4. Like most everyone else here, if it’s not prohibited by law*, I carry. If it’s a private establishment and they don’t want my gun, then I try to do business elsewhere. If there’s no other option, then I carry anyway.

    * I make an exception for the Post Office. I regularly have to run in and out of there for just a moment, and I’m not going to the trouble of disarming for that. Especially since I’m not even allowed to have it in the car in the parking lot. I’m not disarming and then also parking next door/across the street. That’s where I draw the line.

  5. Holy Hell, that was piss poor execution of a “plan”. Giving up his gun because a 911 operator told him, the wife’s wild west john wu double fisting shooting to “scare” him off, not shooting him at more opportune times.

    • I’m glad everything turned out fine, but I’m with you – that description of the wife firing wildly with a pistol in each hand (hitting only the perp’s ear) strongly suggests their training wasn’t quite so effective as the article claims. Still, a good result.

  6. I’m not big on the idea of pumping out hundreds of thousands or millions of little plastic cases that wont be picked up or biodegrade. Must be the hippy in me.

  7. Yes, anytime I venture out I am carrying. Signs or no signs, I carry. They can’t see it, so they don’t know I have it. School, bar, restaurant, or hospital. I am carrying. Love Missouri concealed carry law.

  8. The only time I see “tiny nineys” is in articles here saying not to call them that. Either you’re oversensitive or trying to start the tend with reverse psychology.

  9. Have been out of the loop on Marlin since they closed in Conn. Today I went over to Big R and out of curiosity checked out the 336. Laminant wood checkering was less than impressive and I cut my hand on the lever from metal burs. Reciever finish looked like matte black spray paint!

  10. Turn around and ask them how many of them have smuggled a bottle of soda or bag of candy into a movie theater. Often it’s on the same exact sign that bans guns. What’s the difference?

  11. Let the blood dance begin. I don’t need to listen to 911 tapes to know something horrible happened there. And I don’t need to be emotionally manipulated by people looking to wave the bodies of dead children like a flag so they can tyranize me.

  12. You should be constantly evolving until you reach an optimum that suits you best at a given point in time. I have found that JMB designs suit my eye the best so I replaced my XDm compact 9 with a Browning Hi Power. The Browning has the most benign recoil of any centerfire pistol I have ever shot which is a big plus since I carry it when I walk my dogs. Under those circumstances it’s going be a one handed shot. And I agree with Fug when you have a steel framed pistol you have bludgeon as well as a gun.

  14. Why rehash a tragedy, that didn’t get the gun laws that they wanted before.Well now that the leftist socialists in the senate voted to change the law governing the 60% law about such legislation being able to get past a majority rule point, maybe they can try to get the gun laws they want past, but. What they don’t understand is when they use this draconian measure to get what they want , they are going to start the 2nd Revolution , it almost happened this past April if the gun bill would have passed.Quite a few members in law enforcement and other law institutions agreed with this assessment . The members of Congress along with Heir Boobama do not or cannot understand that We the People do not want these laws , or they figure that they can roll over the citizens if they don’t follow the laws they pass down . Yes there is Revolution in the air and it keeps growing each day with all of the restrictive government being put in place , eventually it will be armed confrontation , at least in this country we do have the capability to fight back against tyranny , some countries in the past have not had that right . Be prepared and ready . Keep your powder dry .
