The NSSF has released their adjusted figures for December 2012’s NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) checks. December’s total (2,237,731) represents an increase of 58.6 percent over the previous year’s number (1,410,937). The NSSF-adjusted NICS 2012 year-end figure (13,780,285) represents a 27.7 percent increase over the 2011 year-end total (10,791,275). No doubt the December and year-end totals would have been significantly higher if firearms inventories hadn’t been depleted by the Great Gun Surge. Expect January’s numbers to reflect the drought. [NB: The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Michigan for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.]
It also doesn’t reflect the massive surge in private sales. I’m seeing TONS of people selling their safe queens at massive profits.

So true. Orlando’s gun show usually has a few guys walking around with guns inside, and maybe one or two in the walkway outside. This weekend there were easily a dozen and a half outside alone, and that many more inside. I watched a guy pay $850 for a Kel-tec Sub-2000, shaking my head.
I’m doing my best to keep calm and carry on. I’m saving more aggressively, but I’m waiting with the understanding that the house isn’t going to turn on us and I’ll be able to grab some new toys when prices drop in a few months.
I was at a show in Lansing MI last week and saw two S2K’s, one for $1,400 and one for $2,000, hell they had a KSG for $4,000!

I would like to see the data by day and see the spike after the antis ramped up the calls for an AWB compared the highest single day in the last 4 years.
If the MSM mentions it at all, they’ll wait until January’s numbers plunge, then spin it as people turning away from gun ownership.
I would like to see every single one of those checks accompanied by a call to their representatives every week until the worst of these bills is defeated.
I agree that the media will spin the “plunge” in gun sales for January. “Gun owners finally coming to their senses”, and all that bs. The fact of the matter is, gun sales must plunge in January. There is nothing left to buy! I am sure they would be very strong otherwise.
That’s 1 sale per 150 people in the US. in 1 month. not counting private sales.
CHL holders in Texas (and other states?) don’t go through the background check when we buy guns. I assume that means this NICS number doesn’t include CHL holders who bought guns from FFLs in December. Is that correct?
I don’t know, I have still been able to make a few purchases. Don’t be surprised if you see only a slightly lower number because people are still buying VEPR’s and anything else they can find. To some it’s not a matter of what they might not be able to get under a ban, they’re just buying up firearms.
Save a copy and arm yourselves with some of the numbers from the linked pdf in the article. January is normally one of the weaker months and the previous three January results were 715,309; 784,856 and 920,840.
Note that the 2012 checks almost doubled from 2000 levels. Total adjusted checks from 2000 to 2012: 111,939,551.
Remember that these are background checks and each check may represent several firearms. Also note that these figures do not accurately represent sales in states where a CCW permit can be used in place of a NICS check.
Nor does this include all the folks who put down a deposit for guns that won’t be delivered until Jan/Feb/Mar or however long the backlog is.
Not likely, because most shops in my experience don’t run the NICS check until the point of delivery.
On an interesting sidenote, I overspent for Christmas this year, and needed a little cash to get me past the first of the year when the bonus comes in. I’d never done this before, but I realized I could pick up several hundred dollars short-term by pawning one of my guns. So I did. They ran a NICS check before they returned it to me. I was unaware that they would, but I contributed to the numbers bump.
I was planning on buying a gun this month. It’s my birthday present to myself. Now i don’t know if I’ll be able to find anything worthy of me.

Even the classifieds in the local papers are full of AR’s at anywhere from $250 to $600 over the normal market value for a used rifle.
Seen a Delton AR10 w/ two extra(3 total) polymer mags, iron sights, less than 5,000 rounds shot through it and no case or sling ,etc. just the rifle and iron sights,all used, for $2200 in the classifieds this morning. Called the guy for shits and giggles and offered him $1600 cash, the asshole hung up on me!!! Hope he has to eat that thing for breakfast about 6 months from now!!!
Went to the local Gander Mountain (Morrisville, NC) yesterday and they had the camo (and therefore less scary) Remington R-25 AR-10 clone. I think they were asking just under either $1400 or $1500 (sorry, didn’t really pay attention to the tag). They also had the R-15 for just under $1300. In general, their stock levels have improved since the 26th-28th of December.
Our LGS is a small mom and pop so to speak. Owned by a local Reserve Officer/SWAT Team member and usually has a good AR selection but Friday went in and no AR’s, mostly bolt guns, shottys and some polymer semi’s, revolvers and a few 1911’s.
Not even an used AR’s. Not a big fan of the AR(5.56) platform but have considered an AR 10(.308) before. The 10 just has better punch and range.
Am waitin on tax return to get my M1 Carbine(.30carbine) out of layaway hopefully before they want to take it away from me because it is a “Military Style” weapon. Not scary and black though!!
Never done business with Gander Mtn; are they good,bad or just Meh?? Really would be for ammo not available here, ie .30carbine and 7.62x54R. I reload but have to order pretty well all the stuff for those two calibers.

Was recently denied a gun purchase from NICS. Just found out that they got my name mixed up with a similar name of a guy with the same birthday that lives approx. 2000 miles away. They put me on a 3 day delay. I found out this information after I received the reason for my denial in the mail from NICS. What did the FBI do in that 3 day delay period? And why was I not cleared? The State Agency will not release any more information about the incident I was confused with because the law prohibits it and the FBI requires that I get that information from the state in order to clear my name. I am at the end of my rope. If the FBI can’t handle a simple task like comparing names with other required information like a social security number and license number, how are we expected to function with any new restrictions. I don’t even have a parking ticket on my record and I can’t get a firearm. This obviously doesn’t mesh since I did purchase a gun 2 months ago with a passed NICS check. Nothing has changed since then. I think the FBI needs to revamp their background check system. It obviously does not work.
