Steyr Arms’s fearsome SSG 08 is joining the rest of the sniper rifle pack in the move towards firing .338 Lapua Magnum caliber bullets. The press release reveals that the latest version of the Austrian gun maker’s EKO COBRA anti-terrorism unit-spec rifle is “en route” to the States. Bop on down to your friendly neighborhood Steyr gun dealer with $6,795, clear your state’s gun purchase requirements, and this bad boy is yours, for every sporting purpose! Well, long-range target shooting and “tactical” operations, according to the bumph. Not to antagonize those who wonder why civilians need a rifle capable of firing a bullet that remains supersonic over 1650 yards (download Lapua bullet brochure here), or those who fire a rifle capable of firing a bullet that remains supersonic over 1650 yards, but it is interesting that the .338 Lapua can penetrate military body armor from up to 1,000 metres (1094 yards). Anyway, a British sniper’s recent record kill from 2,707 yards using .338 has done nothing to diminish American gun owners’ enthusiasm for the caliber, and much to increase it. And, thus, sales. New SSG 08 chambering specs after the jump.
Fromt the Magna-Steyr press release:

The cold-hammer-forged barrel measures 27.17 inches to maximize the potential of the .338 cartridge, and its 1:9 twist rate will stabilize bullets up to and including the increasingly popular 300-gr. HPBT Secnar projectile. The action, magazines and stock were lengthened to accommodate the dimensions of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. Due to the SSG 08’s extreme accuracy potential and ability to maintain supersonic speeds at distances in excess of 1,500 meters with the .338 Lapua chambering, a 20-MOA declination scope base will also be included to make use of your favorite long-range optic. The .338 Lapua Magnum version of the SSG 08 also includes a newly designed heavy-duty bipod.

  1. The only drawback is the price of the ammo. .338 Lapua can be $. Figure $5-$8 every squeeze- but you will not be squeezing a lot with the recoil. Moreover, the cost of monster 50 BMG can be cheaper because it can be bought in the military surplus market. And you have the advantage to take out a tank downrange.

    • You won't be able to take out any sort of tank with .50 BMG. A good shooter could disable an unarmored or lightly armored vehicle, but improved explosives are much better against those types of vehicles.

  2. Really If you are worried about the cost of 338 lapua ammo why did you buy a gun that cost $2000 to $10000 that dont make any cents try the new 10/22 takedown from ruger ammo is cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. well the problem is the .22LR isnt exactly in the same stopping power nor the range as a .338 Lapua the ability to shoot decent grouping at over 1000yards is the appeal of the .338 lol not the 100ft of the .22.
