BREAKING: President Readying Executive Orders on Gun Control

“Vice President Biden told White House allies in the gun control fight Thursday that President Obama will be announcing new executive actions on gun violence in the days after the Senate voted down a gun violence bill,” buzzfeed.com reports. “On a conference call with ‘stakeholders,’ Biden told gun control advocates that the fight is not over and that eventual action on gun control will come. Press were not invited to the conference call; a participant provided BuzzFeed with access.” The White House is already walking back Biden’s promises. But here’s part of the transcript . . .

Look, I know you’re going to say that I’m just being an optimist and I’m trying to put a good face on this. But, you know, I’ve been around here a long time and we’ve already done, because of you, some really good things. Number one, the president is already lining up some additional executive actions he’s going to be taking later this week.

Already we have put out notifications to all communities that if they want school resource officers to use their portion of the COPS grant to be able to deal with a school resource officer or someone in the school who’s a counselor, or whatever they need.

Secondly, we also have pushed forward grants for new and available funding for dealing with training teachers and dealing with alerting them to high-risk, you know, kids in their communities and their school that are signs that they’re going to have a real problem and may be the very kids you need to get to now before they end up like an Adam Lanza. We also are going to have a national mental health dialogue where we’re going to vastly expand mental health availability under the Mental Health Parity act as well as the Affordable Care Act.

OK that’s the bit that the White House says refers to existing Executive Orders, signed between Newtown and yesterday’s Senate debate about background checks. And then there’s this . . .

We also are reviewing the list of prohibited purchasers to maybe expand that list of prohibited purchasers. Granted, only 60% of people who go for a purchase are doing it [background checks].

I wonder what that means. Or if it’s just “Double Barrel” Joe shooting his mouth off. Again.

  1. Anything that normalizes firearms counteracts the constant vilification from the grabbers.

My generation grew up on Combat, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Have Gun Will Travel, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett… I could go on and on. And cops when I was a kid would NEVER react with the absolute terror I’ve witnessed in so many of these YouTubed confrontations between gun owners and the police. Guns were a fact of life, not an aberration.

We had huge flocks of starlings when I was a boy. Every evening they would began to roost in a huge maple on our property. My dad or I (I took over starling patrol at the ripe old age of twelve, after receiving a 12 gauge side-by-side from granddad for my birthday.) would walk outside and give them a couple of Number 8s. They would fly to another roosting tree a couple blocks away. Soon we would hear a couple BOOM, BOOMs from down the block. The BOOMs would travel across town till, after 15 – 20 minutes it would be our turn again as they circled back around.

Now this was a small country town in Central Illinois, not the wilds of Montana. Population of about 1,500. And this was pretty much a nightly thing throughout the summer. Can you imagine the response to such an event today? 42 swat teams and DHS. Probably the National Guard. Especially if involving a 12 year old! (Save the Children!) And I was nothing special. I maybe moved up in power in my firearms a little quicker than some, had some good training very early, but not unique at all. I can picture the headlines on MSNBC, “Small Midwestern Town Held Hostage To Violence!!!” But the thing is, it was NORMAL behavior.

Oh, by the way. No one was ever injured in this nightly orgy of “gun violence”.

I am emphatically not a fan of most first person shooters, I think they desensitize people to violence. My dad made the same argument against Gunsmoke. But the violence was climatic, not constant, there wasn’t the gore, and there was always a moral lesson attempted. But the video games also normalize guns. As do the various shows featuring firearms.

    Maybe a net gain overall.

  2. Apparently the reaction was swift and harsh as “Buzzfeed” has an update claiming that ‘Uhh, did I say new? I meant implementing the last EOs. Yeah, that’s the ticket’

  3. “On another level, I found the LC380 is wonderful for training new shooters. During the weekly CWP courses I teach, it was a great gun to help people gain confidence in their shooting without thinking they were being babied by shooting a .22lr while keeping them from being overwhelmed by larger calibers. ”

How loud is it compared with a .22 and a 9mm?

    Reply
    • Funny, I’ve found the quickest way to scare off the lady gun neophytes is with a small .380, as it hurts the hands too much. They seem to like a full size or Commander size 1911, being much easier on the hands and therefore funner to shoot.

  4. Honestly not sure about the effect FPS games have had on the mindset of the country. But I think we do need to give a show like Top Shot credit. We’ve all had issues with the show but the bottom line is that Top Shot showcased firearms in the way that most of use actively use them: Having a good (and safe) time using marvelously engineered tools.

They must really be chapped. Despite the warning signs for the last couple of weeks that they did not have enough votes, they can’t help but act as though this was a last-minute surprise and sneak attack by those dastardly gun owners and the evil NRA.

E.O.’s only apply to the Federal Agencies of the Executive Branch..if they are contrary to law, they are subject to being overturned by the courts…and certainly one would have a good argument for injunctive relief against their application. Additionally, once a new president takes office, it is common practice to cancel multiple E.O.s of their predecessor.

I was brought up on pump actions and bolt actions and then i picked up Call of Duty 4 in 2007, and the second i realized i could have my very own M4 with an ACOG, i was in, and i know plenty more people that had it not been for video games, they’d have no interest in firearms at all. Embrace the Mall ninjas and zombie hunters! They’re your friends, they’re young, energetic and more importantly not FUDD’s. You know how easily you can horrify a liberal when the young people that voted for them are telling them to fuck off trying to take away their “Call of Duty guns”? You don’t have to like their taste in regards to 16 lbs of accessories on their AR’s, but keep in mind THEY WANT AR’s!

    Reply
    • Yes, this is a strong selling point for them. The worst thing to do now is let our guard down. The grabbers have been set back but they’ll try again.

The main thing to do is work on the misconception that 40% of sales are “off the books” (the gun show loophole) and the idea that a background check is harmless with 90% supposedly in favor.

I don’t think it would be anywhere near those numbers if people realized how intrusive and dangerous these checks can be and how many gun laws there already are.

In any case, as ever, we see in Obama the true nature of a tyrant. As I said in the post where we won the day yesterday, tyrants do not accept the rule of law and he will act unilaterally to crush the rights of his would-be subjects.

Yesterday wasn’t the end of a fight…it was Americans drawing a line in the sand. You really think a narcissistic self-fancied emperor isn’t going to step across? Keep your powder dry.

  16. Well, you’ve got one right here. Video games, particularly Call of Duty and Rainbow Six: Vegas, got me interested in shooting recreationally, which forced me to become familiar with gun laws and exposed me to “gun culture,” which made it suddenly very easy to see through all the media spin, ignorance and B.S. behind attacks on gun rights.

I’ve taken my gamer friends shooting, and at least two of them own firearms now; one got a carry permit. I’ve personally read every post here at TTAG since Newtown to keep a close watch on legislation and to learn the occasional cool new thing from reviews and other “fun” articles. I’ve been contacting my legislators and teaching friends & coworkers to see past rhetoric and evaluate gun law proposals based on what they actually might accomplish as we’ll as what they’ll cost. I think it helps that I don’t at all fit the stereotypes of a gun owner (I still smile to think of one friend calling me a “strange hippie”); none of the usual labels fit, and I’m patient & calm when I discuss guns, gun laws & freedom, so it’s got to be more challenging to dismiss what I have to say outright.

So, yes, video games were the stepping stone for me to become familiar with guns, to be a responsible gun owner and to respect and defend that freedom for myself and others. Obama can blame politics and interest groups all he likes, but he’s delusional to think that the NRA brainwashed me into fearfully badgering my senators into fearing for their reelection. No, I simply invested hundreds of hours of my own time to inform myself and to weigh gun law proposals both what they would cost in terms of freedoms vs. what we might gain in terms of safety, and I independently came to the conclusion that none of the gun control proposals was a worthwhile tradeoff. And then I contacted my Senators & Representatives to politely and succinctly tell them why. I got more involved in politics for this one issue than I ever have for any other, and right now I feel like I may have made some small difference. Score one for freedom, in any case.

He cannot change existing Constitutional laws as it exists, ie, destroy or go around an amendment to the constitution. If he does any of the above, its grounds for impeachment.

What part of NINETY PERCENT of the voting public want tougher gun laws do you not understand??? Seriously? What part? If an EO is passed he is simply doing the will of the PEOPLE. It’ll pass by vote or EO at some point here very soon regardless of your lack of knowledge, fear or resentment towards this President. Sorry. And the WILL of people? That’s kinda like mob rule. The institution that is this country was designed as such to prevent the “will of the people” from, you know, over-riding the will of the rest of the people.

  29. In a word…Yes, but…

I think the majority of the backbone of gun culture come from three groups: the Hunter/Fudd types, the Military/LE types, and the sport/competetion shooters. These groups make the largest contribution to the general gun population…as they tend to pass along thier trade/craft/hobby from generation to generation.

Things like the zombie craze, video games, movies, gun blogs and vloggers…all contribute to the addition of new blood to the culture. If it were an influence graph, this would be the middle where the people of the gun and people from mainstream society meet. Some join up with us, some don’t. But yes, all these influence the growth of our culture.

  30. Larry, so sad to see how misinformed you are. Firstly as with most liberals you start off with uninformed rants and insults. That 90% does not represent the countries population, only of the people polled, and who were they over 80% of those were liberal Democrats like yourself, so the poll is flawed from the beginning. Next these buffoons were elected to protect the Constitution not piss on it, this Bill (and they all knew) would do nothing to prevent any shootings anywhere some of them even admitted that. It was a corner stone for full blown gun confiscation. This president is not doing the will of the people-how can you and people like you still be so blind, look at his luxury vacations, which by the way, you are paying for (well if you work you are), the real unemployment numbers are closer to average 15% nation wide and when Obama care completely kicks in more will be laid off. You need to read a basic economics book and you can see how it is supposed to work, now he wants banks to make the same kinds of bad loans that they started to make when Clinton (yes Clinton) 1st gave foreign banks permission to start doing mortgage loans here, and Bush made the mistake of actually listening to Barney Franks tell him that there was no problem in the housing market. You guys always scream about lies but you never even bother to check anything out. Why has you boy Obama used at least three names since he was a kid, how did he go from a 1 million dollar net work to over 10 in his first 2 years, why did he never actually practice law-just teach Constitutional law (that’s how he knows about trying to cheat it) if he was white he would never even been allowed to run- I know you will now say I’m a racist well I’m as much of one as him and his wife are! Learn some facts-at least all the stuff i just told you can be verified — how about your tripe?

  31. It’s all about a Game of Thrones, I mean, Game of Politics. Whenever a party doesn’t get its way (Dem or Repub), it has to find a way to “save face”… especially given the victory the gun rights community scored against gun control supporters. The President spent so much political capitol on this fight that Democrats are concerned (rightly so) that they will appear weak in future negotiations over the budget, immigration reform, etc. So while “new executive orders” sounds pretty fancy, they will NOT carry the force of brand-new laws – they can only shape interpretations of existing ones.

That said, I can get behind executive orders mandating more funding for school safety or improving the mental health system. Let’s all hope they’re limited to just that.

  32. Honestly, I think Alan G made a good gamble with the M-T. There being a voice of reason willing to try an olive branch was more symbolic than actually effective but I look at it like this:

If he hadn’t hedged a bet behind Senators with an idea, the senate (Schumer in particular) wouldn’t have had any limit of asinine things to come to the floor. The M-T deal set a precedent that limited dumb ideas and by its own writing cancelled out many ridiculous amendments by the way it was written. It failed because it was cruelly gutted and it being gutted (or the simple 100% likelihood of it) was a rallying cry to the GOA who never trusted it and clearly painted who the enemy was for members of other organizations to see without appearing paranoid. Was Alan caught in the crossfire? Yes. Do I think it could have turned out better had he not taken one for the team? No.

Alan made a fool out of everyone who went with and raped his bill. Knowing it would die cruelly, it sent up enough red flags on both sides to basically be the tipping point for now and show what both sides are capable of united.

Political climate of judgemental foolishness was bound to kill gun rights bills at this point but gun control backfired largely cuz of the fallout from the AWB first and M-T as the lesser evil and still good idea. That’s what it looks like to me.

It makes Alan a loser but it did exactly what he needed to do. So, well played even in “defeat” is only half of it.

  33. Come now, gentlefolk. As some have hinted, you don’t keep score during a war. Get inside the OODA loop and keep the opponents off balance. Why is there no version of the M-T bill ready with actual safeguards built in? Written by professional pro-2A attorneys and not in consultation with Brady and Bloomberg.

That way, we can say – you want the M-T bill, here it is. You claim no registries will be established – then you can’t complain about the ironclad civil penalties, criminal penalties with no statute of limitations, [and perhaps forfeiture of federal pensions] we included. You want more access to mental-health records. So do we. But as a sign you can be trusted, let’s define mental health precisely – so that, for example, veterans are not designated as incompetent simply because they can’t handle the confusion of veterans benefits any better, or worse, than the current Secretary of the Treasury could handle the tax code.

What, you don’t agree? What are you? Child-hating cannibals? We’re giving you everything you claim you wanted.

As in all combat, you only rest to catch your breath as necessary, and as minimally as possible.

It is a bit thicker in the grip (but contains 12 rounds), although this aids in shooting comfort and control. The slight increase in barrel length (3.2″ v 3.1″) does seem to result in better velocity (to other 9mms). For a moderate increase in size, there is a significant improvement in comfort, round count, trigger function, ease of disassembly, of course power, as well as a $100 cash savings. Bit of a no brainer to me.

(Y)ou do not need an assault weapon to defend yourself or your property. Assault weapons have one purpose and one purpose only: to kill a large number of people really quick. This goes well beyond the purpose of self-defense.

If that’s true, why did the AWB and every other AWB ever have a law enforcement exemption? Is it now standard operating procedure for the police “to kill a large number of people really quick”? I guess it is for the LAPD, as demonstrated in the Dorner manhunt, but I guess they’re taking it national.

If this passes, even though I haven’t seen it yet, I am sure it will be a major pain in the ass and probably costly to those of us who reload and it will not in anyway stop a terrorist. It may change their choice of explosive.

Reloading components are hard enough to get right now. This will just make it worse. Fortunately I have about a year and a half worth of powder but that is not forever.

But surely, SURELY, no one can possibly defend the sale of explosives, right? They’ll be telling us that ANYONE who wants to buy gun powder must be some sort of domestic terrorist.
