Choosing the right gun oil is crucial for maintaining your firearm’s reliability and longevity. Gun oil serves multiple purposes beyond lubrication—it protects against rust, corrosion and wear, ensuring smooth operation for moving parts like slides and bolts.
Here are some of the best gun oils that stand out for performance, protection and versatility:
- Radcolube CLP: A military-standard product, this 3-in-1 solution cleans, lubricates and protects firearms of all sizes. Trusted by the U.S. military and competitive shooters, it’s a reliable all-purpose option.

- Hoppe’s No. 9 Lubricating Oil: A classic, time-tested oil known for its long-lasting consistency and ability to prevent hardening. It’s ideal for those looking for dependable lubrication.
- Ballistol Multi-Purpose Aerosol CLP: This versatile aerosol CLP is convenient for range bags and workbenches, though it’s not suitable for copper or lead removal.
- Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil: Designed for high-heat and high-volume shooting, this oil provides excellent protection against rust, moisture and wear, making it ideal for semi-autos, suppressors and full-auto firearms.

Each of these oils offers unique benefits, so consider your firearm type, shooting conditions and maintenance needs when selecting the best gun oil.
My Minimalist Gun Cleaning Kit: Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS)
Over the years, I’ve learned that less is more when maintaining my firearms. After trying out numerous tools and kits, I’ve streamlined my gun cleaning setup to include only the essentials. The “Keep It Simple, Stupid” (KISS) principle has guided me to create a compact, efficient kit that gets the job done—no unnecessary frills.
For my AR-15 rifles and 9mm Glocks, I rely on just a few key items to keep them in top shape:
- Bore Snakes (5.56 and 9mm): These are my go-to for cleaning the barrels. With just a few drops of oil on the bore snake, I pull it through the barrel three times, and that’s it—barrel clean, no hassle. Bore snakes are a time-saver and much easier to use than traditional cleaning rods.
- CLP Gun Oil: Currently, I use CLP as my go-to gun oil. It cleans, lubricates and protects, making it a versatile option for keeping my firearms functioning smoothly. A couple of drops on the bore snake or a rag is all I need.
- Gun Cleaning Brush and Rag: For other parts of the firearm, like the chamber and bolt carrier group, a simple gun cleaning brush and rag are all I need to remove dirt and fouling. I don’t get bogged down with multiple brushes or extra tools—just the basics.
- Finally, I keep a multi-tool for my AR-15, especially for field adjustments and minor fixes. It’s compact and versatile and can tackle most tasks without needing a full tool kit.
I own other cleaning tools, but 99% of the time, these are the items I grab when it’s time to show some love to my firearms. Keeping things simple means maintaining my guns efficiently without overcomplicating the process.

I basically use Ballistol which I soak any gat in & leave for hours. Then use Hoppes lube. The ballistal lasts a long time & is supposed(?)to bond with the barrel. And it’s Non-toxic which is important in my old age after inhaling poison having an antique business. Perfect performance from all my gats. I am old & not a high volume shooter but fairly proficient. If I feel the need I do a deep clean. I use a pretty good Cabelas cleaning kit I got 13 years ago.
I clean after each and every use. Simple procedure of Gunzilla + BoreSnake. I don’t follow the oft-ballyhooed practice (as relayed to me by other gat owners over the years) of cleaning only after a predetermined quantity of rounds such as 2000+. One avid Glock shooter told me his gat was so reliable (and it likely was), that his cleaning point was 7000 rounds.
That might be fine for changing your car’s oil, but for me, it doesn’t matter if I’ve put 500 rds through one of my guns at the range or only 50…I make sure they’re all cleaned and in top condition before putting them away at home.
Curious how my comment above was modded and invisible for many hours, but was finally unblocked, but my follow-up comment lamenting TTAG’s still-bothersome policy was completely removed. I guess the new TTAG staff doesn’t like criticism, particularly from visitors who have been here since long before they bought the site from Dan.
Test.
The Otis Elite Range Box is made by MTM Case-Gard. So you can just buy the box itself online and fill it yourself if you already have a ton of cleaning supplies. Having owned & used MTM’s Range Box for about 6 years now, I’ve been quite happy with it. Box is made in the USA.
As for bore snakes, I’ve been a fan of Real Avid’s Bore Boss. Being self-contained and using the case as the handle to pull it through is very convenient & easy. Unfortunately, they are manufactured in China.

My “cleaning kit” box is an ammo can -and yes I have put it together with this and that which I have acquired. The kit has a lot more inside it than just cleaning tools and includes basic armorer’s & gunsmithing tools, spare parts, springs and supplies for cleaning AND maintenance chores.
Nice find. My at home kit is a basically an ammo can with some additional storage stuff from harbor freight.
All you really need for gun oils and this stuff is extremely inexpensive:
ATF – general lubricant and cleaner.. Transmission fluid is a synthetic highly detergent oil that works.great on Firearms.
Fluid Film -lanolin waxy protectant brushed on lightly over all external and non-bore internal surfaces using a chip brush and either left on in thin film in heavy corrosion conditions or buffed dry with a lint-free cloth for others. Water beads right off like when your car is waxed.
Lucas moly assembly lube -heavy 90wt oil can be used in lieu of gun grease in nearly any circumstance grease is used unless you need a sticky grease to “glue” a part in place when assembling tricky bits where one needs three hands. in those cases any grease will do if used sparingly.such as waterproof marine trailer grease.
Gun oils are a scam. Do a web search on “Ed’s Red.” it’s basically ATF with a bunch of mostly unessesary additives.
Thumbs up for leaving Real Avid out of this. They have some interesting innovative products but the lazy SOBs insist on making everything in Chicomland (PLA). Inexcusable and clueless. Lazy “marketing” types allergic to getting hands dirty with nasty ole MANUFACTURING. BS
The Otis MSR kit is pretty handy for cleaning other rifles too such as lever actions when you want to clean the barrel without taking the rifle apart.
I was on the ATF for gun lube wagon until I realized the odor blended into it to make it distinct for a mechanic to know what it was also offended the olfactory systems of deer. I didn’t get a second shot at that 6 point.
ATF is great for a range only gun, or a truck gun, or a CCW. It’s not all that for a hunting rifle – it gives you away. It’s much the same reason why dedicated hunters don’t wear the same boots at the filling station once they are ready to step into the field.
Any lube is better than no lube, especially with AR15’s, a lube with NO smell is better than a stinking batch of automotive oil regardless of how good the concoction may be firing thousands of rounds in a day. For hunting, you need to keep from ruining your opportunities by using as scent free a lube as possible. Give it a try – nose it out.
