Senate Confirms Cekada As ATF Director

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Robert Cekada as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives—marking the first time a Republican-nominated candidate has been approved to lead the agency.

Cekada, a 30-year law enforcement veteran who has been with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for the past two decades, has been deputy director of the agency—the second-highest-ranking official there—since April 2025.

Prior to his appointment as deputy director, Cekada had served as the executive assistant director of operations since September 2022. In that position, he oversaw ATF’s Office of Regulatory Operations, Office of Field Operations and the Office of Intelligence Operations. He began his career with ATF in 2005 as a special agent in the Baltimore Field Division’s Hyattsville Field Office, working on the Regional Area Gang Enforcement Task Force.

At the time of Cekada’s nomination by President Donald Trump, some gun-rights groups, including the Citizens Committee to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), reacted very positively.

“We recall when Mr. Cekada was named Deputy Director back in April that he received high praise from many in the firearms community,” CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said in a news release. “He brings considerable experience, along with what we believe are truly pro-Second Amendment views, which would be a delightful change from the previous administration.”

Following the Senate confirmation vote on April 29, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) was quick to congratulate Cekada and praise the Senate for approving the nomination.

“Members of the entire firearm industry—as well as all law-abiding gun owners and Americans concerned about crime and neighborhood safety—celebrate the U.S. Senate for giving confirmation to President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next permanent director of the ATF,” Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel, said in a news release announcing the vote. “Director Robert Cekada has decades of law enforcement experience and will no doubt bring his extensive background and understanding of the firearm industry and support for Second Amendment rights and the rule of law to this critical federal agency.”

Keane also said that Cekada’s leading the agency will be a welcome change from how the ATF was weaponized against lawful gun owners under President Joe Biden.

“Law-abiding gun owners and the entire firearm and ammunition industry deserve a leader of the ATF who will focus on implementing laws passed by Congress, holding those who break the law accountable and always respecting the Constitutional rights of Americans,” he said. “That’s exactly what we are getting with Director Cekada.”

In February, after Cekada’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Keane had sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) expressing the industry’s “strong and unqualified support” for confirming Deputy Director Cekada.

“Mr. Cekada has dedicated his life to serving the American people and advancing public safety,” Keane’s letter stated. “During his more than three decades in law enforcement, including over 20 years with the ATF, Mr. Cekada has distinguished himself as an effective professional consistently recognized for his leadership capabilities and proven record of enforcing the law… Mr. Cekada, without question, meets all the qualifications we consider necessary to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of Director of the ATF.”

  2. Two decades in while all that crap was going on?
He has some proving to do.
Go to the ATF website and read the summaries of the 34 proposals. Mostly housekeeping. The reversal of the imported training ammo (ball ammo) is good. But honestly, there isn’t anything in those proposals that can’t be reversed later and that includes the Scotus rulings on braces and bump stocks.
Congress needs to get off their collective butts if you want real change.

  3. Now, root out every agent and administrative functionary responsible for the death of the Little Rock airport director. Destroy their careers.

  4. The only ATF director that should’ve been named, would’ve been one to see it close its doors.. just like Trump named Linda McMahon, the head of the Department of Education.. her job was supposed to be to kill it not run it..
