If you’ve ever set foot inside a sporting goods or gun store, you’ve no doubt seen the name Otis. They’re synonymous with gun cleaning and their Breech-to Muzzle cleaning cable is well known for being a compact way to keep a cleaning kit in your bag. New for 2017, they’re debuting a series of ready-made cleaning kits for various calibers. Pictured here is their Patriot series.

Dan has one of their more expensive Defender models on test right now, so I’ll let him do his part on the Cadillac kit they introduced earlier in the year. The Patriot, at an MSRP of $24.95, targets the shooter looking to have a caliber-specific rifle or pistol kit with the essentials to clean that particular gun. Pictured is the 9mm kit that includes a swab, brush, patch holder, cleaning cable, brass extension rods, a nylon brush, and patches. It also includes a nifty little mini tool that does multiple duties.

The mini tool is a rectangular piece of black plastic that includes O-ring retention of four popular bits (#1 & #2 Phillips, T15 Torx, straight bit) as well as the nut driver needed to drive them. On the opposite side is a female threaded piece that accepts the cleaning rod sections.

Slot the cable in a specially made groove, and you have a perfect T handle for pulling patches through the bore of your rifle, pistol, or shotgun. At the moment, Otis is offering the Patriot in 9 mm, .40, and .45 for pistols. Rifles will be in .17, .223, and .30 cal. Shotgun kits will only be for 12 gauge at this time.

  1. My Otis cleaning system is designed for the military. It has everything to clean .45s, 9mm, 5.56/.223, and 7.62/.308, all in a compact leatherette pack which would fit in any pack.

  2. I’d pay $24.95 for that kit, if I needed one, but the Otis kit I have is still in great shape.

  3. I’d be interested if I hadn’t scored a surplus Otis awck kit with 4 caliber brushes 2 cables and a Gerber multi-tool for $90. Otis kit is good, cheap Otis is even better.

  4. I’ve mentioned this before but it bears repeating. Otis was started and is still owned by a gal from rural Upstate New York. It is in a county the size of Rhode Island with a population of about 28,000. There are more cows than people here. It could be anywhere but she stayed close to home in one of the most business and gun unfriendly states in the nation. We are proud of her, her business and her employees. It is a good product at a fair price.

    • A quick look at their website confirms that all their products are made in the USA. They are now officially added to my ‘buy local’ list!!
