With more and more hunters using suppressors, a suppressor-ready bolt action rifle in the “I don’t care if I hurt it” price range makes a lot of sense. The newest version of the budget friendly Remington Model 783 features a threaded, free float heavy barrel. The four available chamberings — .223, .308, 300 BLK and 6.5 Creedmoor — all come with a 16.5″ carbon steel barrel with button rifling. The Model 783 Heavy Barrel includes . . .
a picatinny rail, SuperCell® Recoil Pad and the new CrossFire™ trigger system that’s user adjustable. It also has a detachable steel magazine (not glock mags) with steel latch.
With an MSRP of only $459 the threaded Remignton Model 738 might be a good drag-through-the-brush rifle. I hope you like the Flat Dark Earth synthetic stock ’cause that’s all it comes in.

HA! and when i lived in Indiana, you only hunt with a shotgun….silly.
Im pretty sure a single Brenneke (old school) will take an elk..
Enough that I don’t like to admit it.
Looks bizarre with that small grip
If they actually gave a crap about people like they do politics, they’d worry less about a phony “gun-fatality epidemic”–the majority of which are suicides that would happen anyway, the majority of the remainder are gangland slayings that will happen regardless–and instead work on reducing deaths from actual epidemic, like influenza.
That disease is the cause of approximately 34 million illnesses, some of which resulting in severe consequences like organ failures and amputations, plus anywhere between 12,000 to 56,000 deaths per season. This is a heavy fatality season, by the way.
But, no, they’d rather exploit people’s ignorance, emotions, politics, and prejudices to advance an agenda that they don’t even care about, but which makes them look good to similar cynical ghouls. What a sad, sick world we live in.
I assume you’re not referring to the SIG decal but I don’t know what the other one is. Somehow incongruent with the SIG sticker? Someone with headphones?
How much velocity and accuracy do you lose when you shoot a 9mm (0.355 inch diameter) bullet out of a barrel that is sized for 0.357 inch diameter bullets?
If its popping melons they want, they ought to try my 28 inch barreled .22-250 with 40 grain VMAXs. They do almost 4000fps and make varmints explode into a red mist.
For what it’s worth! I just picked up a 783 in 30-06. Put a traditions rifle scope on it and changed out the black stock for the Mossy Oak and it performs very well. Michigan born and whitetail deer hunter. I have a couple 700 BDL and besides the action on the 783 not being out of the box smooth it is a good rifle. Looking forward to the heavy barrel model in 308 to become available.
The 6.5 I set up had one of the smoothest actions I’ve ever seen out of the box…..
The 783 is in my opinion the best Remington has to offer with a far superior extractor it is more reliable than the 700 and all I have shot are well under an inch at 100 yds my 243 is 1/4 to 3/8 with berger 105 gr over 45 gr of 7828 imr I have a 783 heavy barrel coming in 6.5 creed looking forward to seeing how that works.the actions smooth up after a bit of breakin its just the coating they put on it that makes it seem a bit rough out of the box now if they offer the 6.5 with a 24 inch heavy barrel ill be very impressed.
The 6.5 is a shooter, you won’t be disappointed
Set up one for a friend in 6.5 and it will flat out shoot 1/2″ groups straight out of the box. I don’t know much about the regular Ruger American, but I can tell you that both of the Ruger Ranches I’ve set up for friends are the worst guns I’ve ever seen straight out of the box. The actions are awful, the barrels touch the stocks because of cheap flimsy plastic and the clips are junk. The savage axis/edge is a better gun than the ranch and its half the price……
