We’ve been hearing from little birdies that the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center in Springield, Mass. is no more. Ringing them up only gets you a voice mail message saying that they’re “closed for inventory until further notice.” Srsly? We’re in the middle of a historic gun boom – just check out Smith’s share price. Isn’t there a way to tally the stock without shuttering the joint for days on end? Wouldn’t a retail store and range with the S&W name on it be a license to coin money? When asked whazzup, their PR people didn’t have enough info to comment, but inquiring minds really want to know. Watch this space.

  1. I have to agree with you, if they closed the center, they are missing out on cashing in even more on this upswing in firearms popularity.

  2. “Is the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center Kaput?”

Perhaps they’ve *heard* something they’re not ready for everyone else to know, just yet?

  3. The crackerjack management of Smith & Wesson strikes again!

If Ruger and Smith & Wesson swapped senior management, Ruger would be in bankruptcy within a year and S&W would crack the Fortune 500.

  4. Ralph is right. I’ve had several personal interactions with the folks at S&W and I believe they are often successful in spite of themselves.

It would be unfortunate if the Shooting Sports Center closed. It’s a nice place to try out a gun and used to be a place to get high quality training. Closing would also affect the people who hold range memberships there.

  5. Perhaps our dear AG Martha Coakley has come out with a new list of “approved firearm sales/ranges”….. and S&W was not approved. It could happen, this is Massachusetts after all, where they want to ban bake sales in schools “because they make our kiddies into fatties”.

  6. I live in the Springfield, MA area and often go there to blow off some steam after a hard day’s work…headed over there after a particularly rough day last week only to be greeted by a sign that read “Closed Until Further Notice”…as with the writer of this story I could not get a straight answer from anyone at S & W…thank God I have a membership to the Westfield Sportsman’s Club (great range btw) otherwise I would have been relegated to taking my frustrations out on unsuspecting teenagers whilst playing Call of Duty lol! Target shooting in real life is so much more rewarding than video games! I’m still in the process of trying to track down some info as I have a few friends that have friends or family members that work at S & W and will post again after I’ve attained more info.

  7. I was told by a friend who was a former employee that they will reopen in July ad a privet club. Makes sense to me. It must of been a real hassle to have range officers trained to handle new novice shooters.

  8. This is extremely frustrating. I hope they don’t make me purchase another membership or something similar just to shoot their. I just dropped $150 on a year long membership and they closed their doors a few months later.

  9. Why will the trigger need work? The Thumb steafy negates any of that. That’s why Kahr added that stupid steafy to their Mass Complaint guns, they didn’t feel the need to make a Massachusetts or NY trigger, so they just put the lever on and shipped the same trigger as the non-compliant guns have.Same reason why you can have a 1911 with a decent trigger in Mass

  10. Thats not true, otherwise the m&p shield would be MA legal and right now it’s not due to its trigger pull.

  11. Smith & Wesson should move to a Southern state. I don’t understand why they stay in Commie Mass. There are plenty of southern towns that would welcome their operation, and they could relocate to an area that gangs don’t frequent.

  12. Smith and Wesson Sports Shooting Center is now open, they closed because a felon used training there to shoot and kill a victim 3 months later. I know this becasue my best friend works at the factory and he told me.
