crime scene

A group of men hanging out in an East Nashville, Tenn., housing complex first turned into a pistol-whipping robbery attempt before becoming a full-on a bullet-flying defensive fracas. The details of the event in numerous outlets were as muddled  and shady as the likely group involved. In the end, however, police have corroborated enough to be investigating the death of one individual in the apartment as a justified defensive shooting.

WKRN, Fox 17 and other local news outlets report 47-year-old Deshawn Baker invited David Mitchell, 35, and Dijon Simon, 33, (a guy named after a type of mustard) into his apartment. There was at least one other man, Mario Sowell, 47, at the apartment. Somewhere in the early Friday evening gathering, Mustard, um, I mean Dijon Simon, began pistol whipping the apartment’s resident, Baker, as part of his attempt to rob him. Mitchell also pulled out a gun.

Baker took exception to being knocked senseless in his own apartment and fought back. As he and Simon struggled for the gun, shots began flying in the apartment. Mitchell, who despite having a gun in his hand that was never fired, was fatally struck by Baker who apparently at that point had control of the gun. Baker’s friend, Sowell, was also hit.

Authorities by then were en route, and when they arrived, they found Mitchell, who was transported to a local hospital where he died. Sowell traveled to the hospital on his own for treatment where he remained in stable condition at the time of the news reports.

Meanwhile, Simon fled the scene. Interestingly, so did Baker, the apartment’s resident. But he soon showed up at police headquarters where he was interviewed and released on the grounds of his self-defense claim after police consulted with the city attorney.

Two guns were found at the scene, including one that had been reported stolen in 2021.

And what about the pungently monikered pistol whipper? Dijon Simon was later found, also suffering from a gunshot wound, and was taken to a hospital where was also in stable condition. Simon, who according to court records has already served time for his part in a previous homicide, has a lengthy criminal record that includes multiple weapons charges and acts of violence. No additional details were available, including if there are any pending charges against Simon in this latest incident, but police were still investigating.

    • Sounds pretty sketchy…. homeowner left his own property (probably to hide whatever the two “visitors” came to buy and then decided to rob instead) before later showing up at the cop shop. Should have just made the transaction there instead, like a craigslist transaction.

  1. “Simon, who according to court records has already served time for his part in a previous homicide, has a lengthy criminal record that includes multiple weapons charges and acts of violence.”

    You don’t say?🤔

    • I know “dis raycis” but based on the names any guesses on the ethnicity of the members of the group? Members of the 13% demographic?

      • No its Nashville. They were aspiring country western singers. All white , holding guitars and wearing pointy toed boots.
        Billy Strings type guys.

    • “Police said a concealed-carry holder in the restaurant mistook the game as a threat and the situation could have escalated quickly”

People say banning realistic toy guns is just stupid…
And stupid is how a POTG would feel as he was sent to prison for killing a kid with a water gun.

      • Except the water guns in question were realistic looking and could not be differentiated from a real firearm without close examination. One even had a light mounted under the barrel just like is done with a real firearm. You are an ID10T.

    • Dumbest “game” ever! This bs was all over the local “news” yesterday. Some of these intellectual giants pulled off this “game”in places where real teen gangs use real gunz. Duh!🙄

  2. “a guy named after a type of mustard“

That’s really funny, coming from a guy named after a tree…

Dijon is the capital of Burgundy.

    • awwwww….Miner49ers wittle itty bitty feelz got all hurt cause someone made a joke about mustard.

OH…. and also Dijon, aside from being the name of a mustard, is not the capital of Burgandy.

Dijon stopped being the capital of Burgandy in the 15th century. In the 16th century Burgandy had finally completely lost its role as an independent political identity and was ‘absorbed’ into France. The Burgundian male line was by this time extinct, the extinction of the dynasty led to the absorption of the duchy itself into the French crown lands by King Louis XI, while the bulk of the Burgundian possessions in the Low Countries passed to Duke Charles the Bold’s daughter, Mary, and her Habsburg descendants.

In 1790 France implemented a ‘departmental system’, what was historically the area of Burgandy was then comprised of four departments – Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne, and Nièvre.

Each department had a ‘prefecture’ city, Dijon serves/served as the prefecture of the Côte-d’Or department and the administrative region Bourgogne-Francé-Comté.

A ‘prefecture’ is not a government capital or capital. In France a ‘prefecture’ served as a political region or local government area ‘department’ being overseen as an administrative jurisdiction that acts sort of like a large area centralized ‘mayors office’ but with more authority.

And of course Miner49er, had you understood what context was you would have seen the distinction with a little bit of actual research without confirmation bias.

      • clarification for : “In the 16th century Burgandy had finally completely lost its role as an independent political identity and was ‘absorbed’ into France. by the 16th century it had completely lost its usefulness as an ‘independent political identity’ which was ‘absorbed’ into the political identity of France. But it became part of France when the Burgundian male line was extinct in the 15th century and the duchy itself was absorbed into the French crown lands by King Louis XI.

With the death of Charles the Bold (the last of the male line of succession Duke of Burgundy) at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, the dynasty of the dukes of Burgundy died out. King Louis XI took advantage of the situation and seized numerous Burgundian territories, including Burgundy itself and Picardy.

        • And people complain about “gun violence.” What about sword violence”? Sword and spear violence transformed the map of Europe–frequently prior to the WWII.

      • nit picked.
once at the fondue stube my sister ordered white burgundy. i was like, and then i was like and then i was all “what, what, whaat?”
kinda like when my daughter realized why the sea cow poster in her school room was named “hugh manatee.”

    • It’s Minor69er trolling for tail, again! Though I question the orientation of a few on this forum, you will probably have better luck over at The Advocate.

    • Named after a tree, oh Douglass, like Douglass Fir. I was thinking I’ve never heard of a Howlett tree but then again a last name really can’t be named after unless you go all the way back to Lourangbouriboon.

  3. “Simon, who…has already served time for his part in a previous homicide…”

Make that MULTIPLE previous homicides? Look at the record. Am I reading this correctly? Out of all of these charges, he was only convicted on two counts of voluntary manslaughter? How much time did he serve?

For the offense date of 11/29/2007 (arrested 11/30/2007):
    Case: *JW297142 Charge: Criminal Homicide
    Case: *JW297141 Charge: Criminal Homicide
    Case: *JW297143 Charge: Poss. Weapon
    Case: *JW297476 Charge: Criminal Homicide
    Case: *JW297477 Charge: Poss. Weapon
Also for the same date: Reck. End. and Agg. Rob.

For the offense date of 7/18/2007 (arrested 5/30/2008):
Case 1640 Charge: First Degree Murder but convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter
    Case 1640 Charge: Fel. Murder
Case 1640 Charge: Att First Degree Murder
Case 1640 Charge: Att Esp. Agg. Rob.
    Case 1640 Charge: Poss. Weapon

For the offense date of 4/30/2007 (arrested 5/30/2008):
Case 1608 Charge: First Degree Murder but convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter
    Case 1608 Charge: Reck. End.
    Case 1608 Charge: Poss. Weapon

THEN he was arrested again (multiple charges both times – no convictions noted) on 5/30/2023! AND 2/21/2024!
The incident described in the TTAG article took place on April 05, 2024. Why wasn’t he behind bars?

“[The justice system] is not expected to be psychic, but these convictions are not about poor [enforcement of the law],” the judge said at the sentencing. “These convictions confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have halted an oncoming runaway train—about repeatedly ignoring things that would make a reasonable person feel the hair on the back of their neck.

“Guidelines in this manner do not capture of the catastrophic impact of the acts or in the action. And in these matters, the guidelines do not take into account the complete lack of insight [the prosecutors and judges] have for their behavior to this very day.”

Where’s the mob ready to take down these people after they gave those parents 10-15 years?? Now multiply this story by thousands and compare that to a tiny handful of high profile school shootings. This is a fine example of how they manipulate emotional people.

    • It’s the new communism. Instead of class, it is based on race. Whites, the new Kulaks, are thrown in jail, blacks, the new oppressed, are given a pat on the head and sent on their way. As I said below, the only thing you can do to defend yourself against this discrimination is to move away from the latter demographic. God forbid you actually defend yourself against their depredations.

    • RE: “Where’s the mob ready to take down these people after they gave those parents 10-15 years?? Now multiply this story by thousands and compare that to a tiny handful of high profile school shootings. This is a fine example of how they manipulate emotional people.”

As if the “mob” is happy with the revolving doors of the criminal justice system…If you have to stretch your imagination to concoct a point then you do not have a point. The parents of the shooter of defenseless school kids are a key part of the equation…Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the rampant crime that’s happening across America today outweighs the actions of my clients who simply purchased a firearm for their insane snot nosed kid yada, yada…Give me a break.

      • You don’t seem to understand the implications of a justice system that picks and chooses based on the emotions of the mob.

“As if the “mob” is happy…”
Compare and contrast the above story with the story about the parents. I’ll ask again. Where’s the mob for this story? It doesn’t exist because there is no incentive to create a mob.

        • dude…The parents are right where they belong. Unless you want to base an appeal on the basis of your lame brain where’s the mob clown show sit down and live with it.

        • “The parents are right where they belong.”

I never said otherwise, other than previously saying it was a dangerous precedent because the justice system can’t be trusted. That wasn’t even on this page where you’re responding to me with your usual vile comments for some unknown reason. You still don’t seem to understand what you’re replying to.

Instead of using the comment section to vent your obvious anger issues, you should first take a moment to try to understand what people are saying. If you disagree with what they’re saying, then state your case. You rarely do that. You mostly just go around insulting people. Read the comment you’re replying to again, and think about it before responding this time.

      • “The parents of the shooter of defenseless school kids are a key part of the equation…”

The justice system is a key part of the current violent crime problem. It appears that my point sailed well above your head.

        • Even after having it spelled out for you, it looks like you still don’t understand. I’m embarrassed for you at this point. You’re welcome to agree or disagree with the point I made, but that isn’t what you’re doing.

Are you willing to die on the hill of defending the justice system for going easy on violent criminals while throwing *select* parents in jail for things their children did? Should we apply that logic everywhere, or only in very select cases? This is somewhat new territory. Are you for equal treatment under the law or not? Try to think of an actual answer instead of a low IQ insult.

          Dijon Simon’s DOB: 12/25/1990
Simon was 16 years old when he first murdered people. Shouldn’t we be examining the parenting skills of his parents? Why weren’t they jailed? As a matter of fact, we have a lot of investigating to do with all of these teens running around attacking people, and I’m not only talking about school shootings, which is a tiny fraction of the actual violent crime taking place.

  4. So the one guy who didn’t have a gun at the beginning of the incident was the only guy who didn’t get shot. Is that luck or what?

  5. I’ve quit leaving my apartment unlocked. This is to weird, I came home and was going to make some fried tators and found someone had stolen them. Nothing else, a gunm on my beds headstand, knives, money, shotgunm in the corner, jar full of coins, a little ——, some booze.
But nope, they took the potatoes? I talked to another person and they said they were missing forks.
    ?
