Laser Ammo Pistol & i-MTTS Combo Review: Get Reps Anywhere

Testing the Laser Ammo Match King and i-MTTS

As firearm owners, there are a lot of barriers to us honing our skills and becoming better shooters. For one, the cost of ammunition is high, and it only goes up over time. Additionally, many of us don’t have land to easily shoot on, and indoor/outdoor gun ranges and clubs can be expensive. Lastly, there is the convenience factor. How much of your schedule do you need to juggle to simply get an hour alone at the range?

For all of these reasons, dry-fire training begins to sound really appealing, yet it lacks an important component: recoil. Recoil changes your grip, sight picture, anticipation, trigger press, and innumerable other factors. So, the corner we’ve pinned ourselves into is wanting affordable ammo, range access, convenience, and simulated recoil – if we’re not doing live-fire.

What we have just described is Laser Ammo in a nutshell. Their company looks to offer all of the benefits of live-fire with the ability of doing it anywhere.

So, today we are going to take a look at their Laser Ammo Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol and the Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo. Let’s dive in!

Build Quality

If you’re not familiar with Laser Ammo, they have been around since 2009. So, they have 17 years of experience making these types of products we mentioned. With R&D offices in Israel and Texas as well as operational and sales offices in the USA and Europe, they are truly a global leader in this space.

Specifications – Laser Ammo Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol

For this review, we are essentially looking at two products. One of which is the Laser Ammo Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol, which has an MSRP of $440 (now discontinued – they might bring it back or have a 2nd Generation version coming).

The 2011 Laser Training pistol is unsurprisingly a 2011-style handgun, but more specifically, it is designed after the AW Custom HX26 Compact Hi-CAPA recoil pistol. This innovative training pistol is modified by Laser Ammo to make it a “class 1 eye-safe laser training recoil pistol.”

The beauty of this training tool is its realistic weight and balance – paired with recoil simulation and slide cycling action – to make for a gun that stands out as a top-notch option for competitive shooters who use a 2011-style handgun as their firearm of choice

  • CNC machined REAL Conversion Barrel with the Robust SureStrike™ Laser and PST (piston) Back Cap (available in Red or Infrared)
  • Full Metal Slide and Frame
  • Crisp Trigger and a Short Reset
  • Textured Polymer Grip Panels
  • Integrated Accessory Rail for the Attachment of Tactical Lights or Accessories

“The 2011 is a popular gun with competition shooters, as it is red dot ready. The gun delivers an unmatched level of realism when combined with our advanced training solutions. We believe it will exceed the expectations of serious shooters seeking reliable, high-quality training tools and will prove to be the top-tier choice on the market.” – Patrick McMahon, one of Laser Ammo’s Mil/LE sales team and the head of Laser Ammo competition division

Specifications – Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo

The second complimentary product that we are reviewing here today is the Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo, which has an MSRP of $295. These synchronized or collaborative targets have multiple different modes that you can pick from for training, including: Standalone, First Shot Timer, Steel Plate Shooting, Chase The Ball, Shoot / No-Shoot, Double Tap, and Mag Change Timer.

What’s Included?

  • Three (3) Interactive Multi Target Training System (i-MTTS) Target Bases
  • System Controller
  • AAA Batteries for Entire System
  • Four Interchangeable Eargets each (3 of each kind for 12 total) sized approximately 3″-5″ each (IPSC Target is 1/4 scale and the B27 is 1/5 scale)
  • User Guide

A true training arena at your home, for your home defense training and shooting improvement. The Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-pack with system controller combo will provide countless hours of dry fire training options as it has 6 shooting modes. Using the system controller, you can select/control your training program from a distance, wirelessly. Fully portable, train anywhere you can, safely.

You will get instant feedback via light, sound or both without the need of wires, cables, downloads, mobile apps or software.

Performance, Reliability, and Accuracy: Can It Hit its Mark?

So, how did it perform? I am not going to re-hash the owner’s manual and give a step-by-step guide. Laser Ammo does a wonderful job of providing YouTube videos, their owner’s manual, and comments/suggestions on their website. If I speed through this too quickly, I implore you to check out their website.

After cracking open packages, I simply started popping batteries into the targets and pistol. With bright, vibrant lights, everything turned on as expected, and I began to cycle through a couple different programs, and I decided how I wanted to set up a “shooting stage” in my basement.

The targets are really small, but Laser Ammo did that purposefully – because, like my basement scenario, I did not have enough room to shoot 15 or even 10 yards. It was loosely 5 yards or less. So, the reduced-size targets felt challenging and appropriate even though I was within spitting distance of them.

Getting the Recoil Enabled 2011 up and running was as simple as plugging in the provided batteries, doing a rough zeroing with some windage and elevation adjustments via a tiny Allen key, and you’re good to go for aiming.

Then, to get the realism of this “recoil enabled” pistol, you can use a can of Green Gas to fuel up your provided magazine. For those who are unfamiliar with Green Gas (I was initially), I picked some up at a toy/hobby shop in my hometown.

Shooting Experience

When it came to shooting and practicing, I found it to be way more fun than I anticipated. While the recoil of this training pistol isn’t the same as live-fire (I didn’t expect it to be), it was enough to get my sight picture to move slightly, which forced me to practice the mechanics of:

  • Good, Strong Grip
  • Target Focus
  • Transitions from Target-to-Target

Something else that I appreciated is the weight of the pistol. It wasn’t an “airsoft toy” that weighed 2 ounces. It had a nearly identical weight as my personal 2011 handgun – a Springfield Armory Prodigy 9mm. I picked up and handled both of them side by side and was pleasantly surprised by how close in feel and weight they were to each other.

Pros & Cons

Like anything, there are some upsides and downsides to this product. There is a touch of a learning curve, but nothing insurmountable.

Pros

  • Cheap Ammo: Instead of $15/box for 9mm, you can simply gas up with Green Gas and get a lot of shooting done affordably.
  • Convenient: You could, in theory, take this on the road with you, or set it up anywhere.
  • Realism: These aren’t toys; albeit, they can be very fun. This gives you all the realism of live-fire training minus the lead levels and expense.

Cons

  • Use the Investment: We reviewed $735 in training tools – and if you don’t utilize them, train, and better yourself – that’s money down the drain. Just like your elliptical in the basement collecting dust.
  • Learning Curve: If you don’t think you’re techy enough to use this, don’t be discouraged. Yes, there might be a small learning curve, but I would say this product can be used by anyone.

Final Verdict: Is this Worth Owning?

So, what are my final thoughts on the Laser Ammo Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo, and their Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol?… Overall, if you are serious about improving your shooting skills or simply honing them to be the best that they can be, this is a great tool. I would recommend it. If you think this might be fun, use it only 3x and then let it sit. I wouldn’t recommend it. This is an investment – a good one! – but you need to use it. Just like a gym membership, you need to use it; otherwise, it is wasted money.

In closing, I want to thank Laser Ammo for allowing TheTruthAboutGuns.com (TTAG) and myself the opportunity to try out their new Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo, and their Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think. Do you believe that these tools are something worth spending your money on? Would you potentially deploy for additional training opportunities?

As always, let us know all of your thoughts about Laser Ammo, the Interactive Multi Target Training System (“i-MTTS”) 3-in-1 Combo, and the Recoil Enabled 2011 Laser Training pistol in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback and engagement.
