More of a local story, but a violent felon escaped from the Elgin Mental Health facility. [Click here for the Trib’s take.] One guy, in handcuffs. Cue the lockdowns. People are freaking out on social media. Even if he managed to get OUT of said handcuffs, does it really justify the MRAPs and assault gear? Heck, there’s even a photo of an officer with both an M-4 and a shotgun. It’s like he’s girding himself for a zombie attack. Meanwhile, across town, I’m perfectly content hanging out around the yard, knowing that my puny little sub-compact 9 will do just fine, in the highly-unlikely event he comes charging out of the back woods at me. I like the Elgin cops I’ve met, and I know they’re only doing their jobs, but since they deal with armed gang bangers on a daily basis, isn’t this just a bit overkill for 1 unarmed man on the run?
