Glee Takes Flack for School Shooting Episode. And For Good Reason

Last night, the Fox program Glee featured a school shooting. Needless to say, the national media swooped down on Sandy Hook to scare-up some outrage. Apparently, parents offended by the episode were a bit thin on the ground. “I think it’s terrible that the writers and producers of that show didn’t think to contact someone in Newtown to let us know this was coming,” Andrew Paley told newtownbee.com (a quote picked up by the Washington Post and others). “A lot of people watch that show. They shouldn’t be upset by it.” Well I was upset that the producers didn’t take the chance to show a proper response to a school shooter like STFU, muting phones, properly barricading the doors, maintaining a positive indeed agressive mindset, etc. [Click here for the real deal]. And here’s the political punchline related by the WaPo, not in the clip above . . .

And if the images of a potential school shooting weren’t enough, a scene toward the end of the episode shows a gun control debate, as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester claims the gun was hers, taking the fall for the student who brought the gun to school.

“I’m sorry, but in light of recent events, I feel more safe with it in my office,” Sylvester tells the principal after she confesses that she owns the gun.

“Look, Sue, I’m not going to argue the merits of armed teachers right now,” the principal says.

“It’s a different world from when you and I started teaching…the safety net of the public mental health system is gone,” she replies. “Parents with troubled kids are too busy working three jobs to look after them. And the gun yahoos have everyone so worked up about Obama taking away their guns, that every house has a readily available arsenal.”

Wait. What? Gun owners afraid of losing their Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms are buying too many guns which creates too easy access for their children which led to a negligent discharge in the Glee school? GTFO.
