Gear Review: Magpul MOE+ Grip for the AR-15

This is going to be a short and sweet review because there’s not much to say about a grip. It either works or it doesn’t. Magpul has a track record for making things that fall into the “works” category, but unlike the legions of Apple fanboys I don’t tend to spend money on something (especially sight unseen) just because the company has a good track record. I mean, look at the Nintendo Virtual Boy — I rest my case. So is this grip as good or better than the previous incarnations? Let’s find out.

The MOE+ is essentially a standard Magpul MOE grip (pictured above) with some rubber coating. Hence the “+”. Some of the most popular grips for handguns and rifles are Hogue grips, and the most popular of their grips are those slathered with a bit of molded rubber, so the concept isn’t exactly novel. However, unlike Hogue (which molds their grips to fit the shooter’s hand) Magpul decided to simply cover their grip in rubber and not change a thing about the shape. Which is fine, as the shape was pretty good to begin with. I also get the feeling that the simplicity of the shape is the reason this rubberized version only costs about $3 more than the plain Jane version.

The MOE+ comes with the same features as its poorer cousin — grippy serrations on the front and back of the grip, and a hidey hole in the bottom that can be either crammed with gubbins (I prefer to fill my grips with Skittles) or different cores for things like bolt repair kits or spare ammo.

I do have one small complaint.

I like long safety levers. All I have to do is slide my finger backwards and the safety comes off, easy as pie. But not so much with the MOE+ grip. The rubber grippy bits are fantastic for keeping hold of the rifle even in wet conditions, but it also means I can’t just slide my finger backwards with ease. The increased friction is slightly annoying, as now I have to actually flick the safety to take it off each time. I know, it’s a minor complaint, but it’s really the only one I have.

Ergonomics: * * * * *
It feels comfortable in your hand, the grip angle feels right, and its very “grippy.” You won’t be losing your hold anytime soon with one of these.

Frankly, I’m not all that crazy about it. I think I actually prefer the slick plastic grips, especially for my shooting style. But if you’re looking for something with a bit more grip then this is for you.
