I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
That’s right…the second president of these United States expressed the opinion that one of the ways Americans should commemorate the birth of this nation is with guns. Why? Because without them, America simply wouldn’t exist.
Firearms are an intrinsic part of this country’s history, culture and character. Enshrining the individual right to keep and bear arms was a stroke of genius by the Founding Fathers and a civil right that keeps us free to this day.
That’s a fact that our friends in the Civilian Disarmament Industrial Complex and most of the media choose not to acknowledge or will simply deny, all evidence to the contrary. In fact the details of the flag at the top of this post will probably trigger a fair number of them who monitor these pages, which makes it all the more fun and appropriate.
So while you’re spending time with your friends and familial unit today — swimming, grilling, igniting small incendiary devices…whatever — give a thought to all the freedoms we still enjoy and the role that firearms play in ensuring that we still have them. With all of our problems and all of our faults, America is still the best, most indispensable nation. There are many reasons we still have to put up walls to keep people out rather than to make sure they stay in. Have yourself a happy Independence Day.
