It’s always seemed strange that many of the same people who claim that President Trump is a dangerous proto-authoritarian, a fascist, even a closeted Nazi are among the strongest supporters for stricter gun control laws. You might think if you’re worried about being rounded up and put in concentration camps, you’d welcome the opportunity to keep some firearms to defend yourself and your family against the MAGA thugs. And yet these are usually the people who believe that the only ones who can be trusted with firearms are the police (when they’re not protesting cops’ inherent racism and violence) and the military.
But the times, they are a-changin’.
Tom Suozzi, a Democrat Congressman from New York, thinks it’s time for Americans to get themselves a gun and be ready to oppose Trump through force of arms.
…Suozzi made the remark to constituents at a town hall last week, saying that folks opposed to Trump might resort to the “Second Amendment.”
“It’s really a matter of putting public pressure on the president,” Suozzi said in a newly released video of the March 12 talk in Huntington. “This is where the Second Amendment comes in quite frankly, because you know, what if the president was to ignore the courts? What would you do? What would we do?”
A listener then blurts out, “What’s the second amendment?”
And there you see the problem. Suozzi was holding the town hall in the Long Island congressional district he represents. You know, in the state governed by Andrew Cuomo, he of the midnight maneuver that was the over-reaching, anti-gun SAFE Act.
Suozzi shouldn’t be too surprised that there’s a significant segment of his constituency that isn’t familiar with their natural, civil and constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Let alone the fact that the Second Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights by the Founding Fathers specifically as a bulwark against government tyranny. The very same kind of tyranny Suozzi is now warning his historically ignorant constituents about.
This is what happens to a disarmed populace.
But back to the Congressman, who seemed to be advocating violent revolt.
Suozzi political adviser Kim Devlin denied the pol was “advocating for an armed insurrection.”
But the Suozzi campaign at the same time seemed to double down on the comments, as they forwarded a line penned by Thomas Jefferson that called for armed resistance.
“What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms,” the quote said.
Given his impressive, stalwart support for he Second Amendment’s original intent, you’d think he might be chairing the local Friends of the NRA dinner this year. But you’d be wrong.
Suozzi’s comment seems to conflict with his recent push for gun control following the Parkland, Florida, school shooting.
Suozzi even participated in the March 14 student walkout for gun control outside the US Capitol — and called on the young people of his district to back tightened gun laws.
Self-awareness doesn’t seem to be one of the Congressman’s defining characteristics. He’s spent a career working to limit Americans’ Second Amendment rights. But now that there’s someone in the oval office with whom he disagrees, he’s issuing an actual call to arms. Arms that, if he had his way, Americans would have trouble accessing. Karma’s a bitch.
