It’s a good thing there are still a few progressive jurisdictions leading the way on firearms safety, setting the right example for all of us. As they’ve shown so clearly and repeatedly, certain weapons should be restricted only to those with the training and expertise to use them properly. Otherwise, bad things could happen. Oh, wait. “Marion County sheriff’s investigators arrested a fellow deputy this morning after he allegedly fired off a high-powered rifle, while apparently drunk, inside his apartment.”

But indystar.com tells us that Deputy Dawg (not pictured above) wasn’t too blotto’d to come up with a quick BS story once his buddies arrived on the scene.

Deputy Michael McKittrick, 29, told investigators he thought an intruder was inside, according to a sheriff’s department statement.

The bullet didn’t hurt anyone, but it did pass through his neighbors’ apartments, investigators said.

Yeah, an intruder. That’s the ticket. Unfortunately for Deputy Mike, nobody was really buying that one.

McKittrick, who works in the Marion County Jail, was arrested on suspicion of criminal recklessness, a felony. He joined the sheriff’s department in January 2011.

We’re sure the soon-to-be-former deputy will new flow-thru ventilation feature he installed in his apartment building. We hope he’ll enjoy his new IGOTD award every bit is much. He’s earned it.
