Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day: Erica Rooks

We understand that it can be hard to find child care when you need it. And it ain’t cheap either. Sometimes a parent has things they have to get done and being tied down with three little ones can be a burden. Then there’s the problem of what to do when something comes up unexpectedly. Like an emergency full-set nail job. . .

Having short nails, we can’t related to the problem of looking down at your digits and having to do something about them right now. But according to commercialappeal.com, Erica Rooks was confronted with exactly that problem – and a car load of kids – on Friday afternoon.

At about 2:15 p.m., police reported responding to Beautiful Nails Salon at 4230 Summer Avenue, where they found three children — ages 4, 2 and nine months — inside a car in the parking lot. As they approached the car, the woman exited the salon and told officers the children were hers and that she had just been inside to use the bathroom, according to a police affidavit.

But one look at her freshly done, gorgeous talons made the responding officers doubt that bullshit story.

Officers checked the salon’s appointment log and found the woman had just finished a full-set nails service, according to the affidavit.

Oops. Erica was probably betting the coppers wouldn’t check that, huh?

But the real problem wasn’t the fact that she’d locked three tykes under four years of age in her car for an hour or so while she got a full-frontal mani. No, what concerned the cops more was the “loaded silver handgun” that was in the car with the tots. The one the 2-year-old found and pointed at them.

Erica Rooks, 23, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of marijuana and three counts of leaving children unattended in a motor vehicle.

We sincerely hope that Erica’s nails are everything she hoped they’d be when she walked into the salon on Friday. They’ll no doubt impress the Tennessee Division of Child Services representatives when they come knocking on her door in the near future. But she may want to hide the big, shiny IGOTD trophy we’re sending her way. They may not fully appreciate its prestige and the effort it took Erica to earn it.
