We understand that it can be hard to find child care when you need it. And it ain’t cheap either. Sometimes a parent has things they have to get done and being tied down with three little ones can be a burden. Then there’s the problem of what to do when something comes up unexpectedly. Like an emergency full-set nail job. . .

Having short nails, we can’t related to the problem of looking down at your digits and having to do something about them right now. But according to, Erica Rooks was confronted with exactly that problem – and a car load of kids – on Friday afternoon.

At about 2:15 p.m., police reported responding to Beautiful Nails Salon at 4230 Summer Avenue, where they found three children — ages 4, 2 and nine months — inside a car in the parking lot. As they approached the car, the woman exited the salon and told officers the children were hers and that she had just been inside to use the bathroom, according to a police affidavit.

But one look at her freshly done, gorgeous talons made the responding officers doubt that bullshit story.

Officers checked the salon’s appointment log and found the woman had just finished a full-set nails service, according to the affidavit.

Oops. Erica was probably betting the coppers wouldn’t check that, huh?

But the real problem wasn’t the fact that she’d locked three tykes under four years of age in her car for an hour or so while she got a full-frontal mani. No, what concerned the cops more was the “loaded silver handgun” that was in the car with the tots. The one the 2-year-old found and pointed at them.

Erica Rooks, 23, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of marijuana and three counts of leaving children unattended in a motor vehicle.

We sincerely hope that Erica’s nails are everything she hoped they’d be when she walked into the salon on Friday. They’ll no doubt impress the Tennessee Division of Child Services representatives when they come knocking on her door in the near future. But she may want to hide the big, shiny IGOTD trophy we’re sending her way. They may not fully appreciate its prestige and the effort it took Erica to earn it.

  1. Talk about someone who knows how to screw-up big time…I guess the only “blessing” Ms. Rooks can count is that one of the children did not get shot. Hope she had her Orange Juice that morning.

  2. At least she gave her children a way to defend themselves from the 5-oh while she got her nails did.

    Truly disgusting.

  3. It was the first of the month! what did you expect?
Last month when she “got her hair did” she left the kids with her AK..
    Talk about Bling Bang!

  4. ‘The one the 2-year-old found and pointed at them.”

Dan, you inserted that line into the piece perfectly. I saw and felt the officer’s reaction.

  5. Yep, this is the kind of idiot that gets a “raise” for spitting more children out. Thank you, Uncle Barry!!! I needs me a 9 mil!!

  6. Seeing how cops react to other similar situations, I’m surprised they didn’t just unload their weapons on the offending little tyke -of course they would have been in the right and been cleared of any wrong doing.

  7. The gun was illegal: the IGOTD plaque should be going up on a cell wall.

Once you have unlawful possession of a firearm [outside of NYC], all the other details are mere peccadilloes.

  8. This fools lucky that the police weren’t resonding to a call for a dead tot who had just been shot by their sibling.

  9. Where is the 4 year old in all this? We all know that a 2 year old should not handle a gun unsupervised.
Erica’s youngest is 9 months. Maybe she needed her nails done to look pretty for the next sperm donor for baby #4.
At least one of the kids knew to grab a gun when the cops came.
This goes way beyond irresponsible gun ownership (if she even legitimately owned the firearm).

    • Yeah, I agree…IGOTD is just not enough for this woman. She is so much more. Very sad for those kids. Honestly, nothing surprises me these days though.

  10. Wow, here’s a thread that makes me think twice about ever recommending this site to anyone whom I’d like to convince that the firearms community is not composed mainly of ignorant, racist rednecks. (The ignorance of this gun owner notwithstanding.)

    • Uh oh – idiot alert! idiot alert! idiot alert! idiot alert! WooooOOOOoooooo,
WooOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo. . . Head up your a–, full steam ahead! Yeah, you go, boy!! WooOOOO- etc. and so forth.

  11. the firearms community is not composed mainly of ignorant, racist rednecks

I have a law degree, fought for civil rights and come from New York City. Does any of that qualify me as ignorant, racist or a redneck? I really need to know because your approval means everything to me.

  12. Wasn’t talking to you, Ralph. Just cringing at this sort of thing:

“Thank you, Uncle Barry!!! I needs me a 9 mil!!”

“It was the first of the month! what did you expect?
Last month when she “got her hair did” she left the kids with her AK..
    Talk about Bling Bang!”

“So was the gun her Baby Daddy’s piece? Business must be good to have money for her nails and all that.”

I think there is plenty to comment on about the woman’s idiotic unsafe gun handling without descending to that level. My point is, Ralph, that the gun community is *not* “composed mainly of ignorant, racist rednecks”; often this site helps me prove that point. Comments threads like this one make that a little harder.
