Irresponsible Gun Dog of the Day: Utah Retriever

As an owner of multiple Labradors over the years (two at the moment), I can attest that they never fail to surprise you. And not always in a good way. They’re about the most loveable creatures on God’s green earth, but they also have a propensity for getting into trouble that’s unmatched by almost any other breed. A Utah hunter just found that out as he was picking birdshot out of his ass…

The unnamed duck hunter was scanning the skies with a friend when he decided to climb out of their boat to move some decoys around. The AP via Yahoo News reports:

(Sherriff’s Deputy Kevin) Potter says the man left his 12-gauge shotgun in the boat and the dog stepped on it, causing it to fire. It wasn’t clear whether the safety on the gun was on at the time.

Potter says the man was hit from about 10 feet (three meters) away with 27 pellets of birdshot. He says the man wasn’t seriously injured, in part because he was wearing waders. The man was treated at a nearby hospital.

I’ll take a wild guess that the shotgun’s safety wasn’t on. Maybe the hunter should have had his buddy hold his scattergun rather than dropping it in the bottom of the jon boat.

As for Rover, we’re sure he was wagging his tail and looking for praise the entire time his master was hopping around in his perforated waders. After all, he did provide a valuable service. He demonstrated why you don’t want to load your home defense shotgun with birdshot.

Good boy!
