Chris Christie Vetoes ‘Assault Weapon’ Maker Disinvestment Bill

AmmoLand is reporting that on Friday, “…in addition to signing a $32.9 billion balanced bipartisan budget, Governor Christie continued his fiscally responsible approach to government and spending by vetoing a series of supplemental spending bills and other measures that would increase the costs of government. Included in this block of vetoes was A-3668/SCS for S-2467, 2471 (Jasey, McKeon, Cryan, Johnson, Quijano/Gill, Weinberg, Codey) -ABSOLUTE –  Which prohibits investment by State of pension and annuity funds in companies manufacturing, importing, and selling assault firearms for civilians use.” Christie’s rationale . . .

…given in his veto statement was that disinvestment would further frustrate the already overburdened New Jersey taxpayer. Fair enough. With the second highest tax burden among the fifty-seven states, the last thing Garden Staters needs is a lower return on their already-underwater pension funds just to satisfy the politically correct desires of the Gun Control Industrial Complex™.

Could Christie use the same reasoning to veto other gun control measures that will hit his desk? Has he made the political calculation that all the conspicuous kissy-face he played with the CinC may have served him well at home, but hurt his chances in a prospective presidential bid? Have his advisers looked at the polling and reasoned it’s time to shore up the red side of the electoral ledger? The People of the Gun will be watching with interest.
