The Grand Canyon state has made a grand gesture: elevating the Colt Single Action Revolver to its official state gun (hence the Germanic capitalization thing). The move makes Arizona the second state to designate a handgun as their official firearm, after Utah gave the nod to native John Moses Browning’s immortal M1911. According to azcentral.com, Governor Jan Brewer signed the required legislation without comment. The newspaper was equally tight-lipped, save pointing out that Connecticut-based Colt lobbied for the bill and the fact that Democratic Rep. Albert Hale called the gun an instrument of destruction that was used against Native Americans. I guess he thought Colt was being ironic when they called the Single Action Army Model P “The Peacemaker.”
