Russia is arming underwater drones with assault rifles, and that’s a first for undersea warfare

A Russian state-owned arms maker reportedly unveiled the world’s first underwater drone armed with an assault rifle that’s designed to defend naval bases from enemy divers and assault teams.
“The drone is fitted with an underwater assault rifle. It has undergone sea trials,” Rostec, the company behind the drone’s development, told Sputnik News at the the International Military Technical Forum “Army 2018.”
“Full-fledged trials will begin closer to the start of winter. It is a unique project since no one has so far fitted [an underwater drone] with small arms. Moreover, very few [countries] in the world have underwater automatic small arms.”

New Jersey would not take part if President Donald Trump’s administration allows states to use federal funds to buy guns for teachers, Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday.
The New York Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that the U.S. Education Department is considering whether to permit states to seek federal money set aside for academic enrichment and student services to purchase firearms for educators to protect students.
But Murphy, a Democrat who frequently opposes Republican Trump and vocal gun control advocate, said “arming our teachers is illogical and dangerous.”
“We know what happens when a gun enters a classroom,” the governor said in a statement. “The result is almost always tragic and devastating. Fewer guns means fewer gun deaths.

A little after noon on July 30, authorities responded to a report of a Riverside residence being struck by gun fire. According to court records, a female resident had been making lunch in the kitchen when she was struck in the knee by a stray bullet.

The company said in a statement that its CV-1 can travel as far as 350 kilometers (217 miles) on a single charge, and accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in six seconds. The concept’s retro design is based on a popular Soviet-era hatchback.
Kalashnikov told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti that the CV-1 would allow it to compete with electric carmakers such as Tesla (TSLA). It did not say whether the car would enter production, or provide a price.
The company did not respond to a request for more details.
Gun-toting college grad tries her hand at open carry
A Nashville woman whose college graduation photo of her carrying an assault rifle went viral earlier this year is now garnering attention for openly carrying a firearm around the city, a report said Thursday.
Brenna Spencer, 22, had tweeted the photo in April of herself wearing a pink “Women for Trump” T-shirt and lifting it to expose a handgun in her waistband.
“I’ve heard from women saying I inspired them to take steps to defend themselves and get their concealed carry permits,” Spencer told Nashville’s Fox 17 News. “This was never what I planned although I love having a bigger platform and being able to empower women to protect themselves.”
This week, she walked around the Music City with her Smith & Wesson .380 openly, the station reported.

Mark David Chapman, the man who murdered John Lennon in New York City in December 1980, has been denied parole for the 10th time. On Thursday, a three-person parole board panel rejected his latest bid for parole, Reuters reports.
“The panel has determined that your release would be incompatible with the welfare and safety of society,” the state Board of Parole told Chapman in a letter. The parole board’s statement was similar to the one Chapman was provided when his request was last rejected in 2016 and a nearly identical reason was given in 2014.
