It seems some banks no longer want to do business with some companies that make and/or sell guns.
Berkshire Bank, for example, quit lending money to Sig Sauer a few years ago, choosing not to help the company make more of the MCX rifle that was used to murder 49 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando in 2016.
JP Morgan and Bank of America also have pronounced themselves uninterested in financing the manufacture of military-style rifles for civilians.
So now the poor victimized gun industry is appealing for help. And getting it.
House Bill 2473 would bar the state, cities and all other government entities from entering into contracts of $100,000 or more with any company that discriminates against the firearms industry.
To hear our leaders tell it, gun manufacturers and dealers are suffering the same sort of discrimination long experienced by African Americans.
“Somehow our society has to come to grips with, we lived for years and years and years with guns and ammunition,” Sen. Vince Leach, R-Saddlebrooke, said this week, during a hearing on the bill. “We lived through, as terrible as it was, … segregation and the racism that followed it and now we’re seeing different forms of racism coming forward. This is not good for our country.”
So a bank refusing to lend money to a gun manufacturer so it can make more of the weapon of choice of America’s mass shooters is the same as a bus driver telling Rosa Parks to move to the back of the bus?
