Wyoming Nixes ‘Gun-Free’ Zones

While legislators in many states continue to introduce measures that will further infringe on the rights of their citizenry, other states, like Wyoming, continue to move more to the freedom end of the scale.

Already one of the freest states concerning Second Amendment rights, Equality State lawmakers have now effectively done away with so-called “gun-free zones” in the state. As TTAG readers are well aware, laws banning guns in certain areas are only followed by law-abiding citizens, not violent criminals, so a better term would be “self-defense-free zones.”

Like many states, Wyoming law stipulates that once the legislature passes a bill, the governor can either veto the bill, sign the bill into law or let it become law without his signature. On Thursday, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon allowed the gun-free zone bill to become law without his signature.

In a harsh letter concerning the bill, Gov. Gordon attacked proponents of the bill for not seeing things his way.

“You will remember, I vetoed a remarkably similar bill at the end of the 2024 Budget Session, House Enrolled Act No. 49/House Bill 0125 Repeal gun-free zones and preemption amendments,” he wrote. “In my veto message, I noted my major concerns with the disregard shown to local jurisdictions and the infringement of our state Constitution’s intrinsic separation of powers. Importantly, my message also included a call to action for school districts and colleges around the state to review their gun-free zone policies while my administration pursued reviewing the State’s. Reflecting this legislature’s lackadaisical effort to openly debate and work on this legislation before sending it to my desk, it is tempting to copy and return my same veto letter.”

In the end, after nearly two pages of lamenting the measure, Gov. Gordon concluded: “After careful consideration and with regrets that the legislature stepped over a better path, I let this bill pass into law with this letter without my signature.”

Rather than feed Gov. Gordon’s temper tantrums, proponents of the bill indicated they were just pleased to see it become law and end gun-free zones.

Aaron Dorr, Wyoming state director for Wyoming Gun Owners, told Cowboy State Daily that the bill was in defense of freedom.

“All levels of government exist to defend freedom and HB 172 does exactly that,” Dorr said. “It gives Wyomingites a chance to defend themselves in what used to be deadly gun-free zones. We’re overjoyed to see this come to a conclusion tonight.

“We applaud Gov. Gordon for not vetoing this bill. I want to thank Senate President Bo Biteman who began this fight way back in 2017 and want to thank Rep. Haroldson for bringing this fight home.”

However, according to Cowboy State Daily, Republican state Rep. Jeremy Haroldson, who sponsored the legislation last year and again this year, wasn’t as willing to give the governor a free pass on his tirade.

“The governor is entitled to his opinion, but I’m grieved to see his blatant disrespect for the legislative branch, and ultimately what I feel is the heart of the people,” Rep. Haroldson said.

  1. We here in Mn. have a Governor like that – ” I used to be a school teacher, and only I know what you need irregardless of what a majority of you THINK you need. ”
You may remember him from his antics in the short-running animated series ” The Harris and Walz Campaign ” which fortunately didn’t get syndicated.

    • I think I remember that campaign…it was a really bad anime, right? If memory serves, the old Speed Racer’s voice acting was better and Chim Chim was easier to understand!

  2. Like so many Gov Gordon speaks about a position/stance/ solution that simply does not exist, which is a “middle ground”. Persons of the mindset of Gov Gordon say they want to work things out. Sure they want to work things out, their way. All the while ignoring the oath they took and the rights of we the people. The good news is Gov Gordon did not veto the bill and the bad news is…………….surely you can fill in the bad news.

    • Hush,

I think about this situation another way:

Imagine a nasty and violent rapist who has ZERO respect/regard for the human dignity of women. He sets his sights on a woman and threatens her with 4 hours of nonconsensual $ex. Of course the women refuses to comply. Then the rapist counteroffers with 2 hours of nonconsensual $ex and she refuses again. He counteroffers yet again demanding one hour and she again refuses. Democrats (and like-minded) would tell the woman that she must find some middle ground with the violent rapist.

There is no middle ground when someone is demanding to reduce your human dignity.

      • Good analogy. Democrats would say to the woman, “Why can’t you compromise? Why can’t you accept our common-sense offer of just one hour of being raped? You’re being selfish.”

Nope, that is actually what Republican politicians are saying:

“GOP candidate says he tells daughters to ‘lie back and enjoy it’ if rape is inevitable
The Associated Press via Nexstar Media Wire

“Republican Robert “RJ” Regan made the remarks in a livestream hosted by a conservative group during an exchange about decertifying the 2020 presidential election. He said he tells his three daughters to “lie back and enjoy” rape if it’s inevitable.”

          • 26 is rapidly approaching. Thank you in advance for all your help in getting the gop further ahead.

            Fascinating.

          • “Republican politicians” As in multiple, or just one guy that no one would recognize, who lost his election? You found one literal loser who said something that was indefensible, and you think that represents other Republicans who actually win? Please explain your logic, or lack thereof. (You don’t really think that. We all know you’ll say anything to try and win the moment.)

          • “As in multiple, or just one guy“

Well, some Republicans just say rape pregnancies are a “gift from God”, so there’s that.

“Republican Senate Candidate Says Rape Pregnancies Are a ‘Gift from God’
Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, an Indiana Republican, turned a few heads and dropped a few jaws on Tuesday night when he said that pregnancies resulting from rape were “something that God intended to happen.”
            By Adam Clark Estes
            OCTOBER 23, 2012”

And he’s not the only one, Republican Rick Santorum has the same opinion:

“We’re to believe that Santorum’s desire to overturn Roe v Wade is “not a matter of religious values”, yet, when discussing a hypothetical pregnancy by rape just moments later, he says: “I believe and I think that the right approach is to accept this horribly created, in the sense of rape, but nevertheless, in a very broken way, a gift of human life, and accept what God is giving to you.”

          • Sure because “lie back and enjoy it” and “horribly created” are exactly the same thing, right? They’re basically interchangeable.

          • minor speedbump…you had 2 1/2 hours of furious research time at your disposal and the best you came up with is a 13 1/2 year old article to make a lame-ass parallel to a post ? Do you have a hard time cashing your Soros checks with all of your “clever” name change contortions that you’re going through lately ? Why aren’t you using your Missy12 handle anymore ? Did the owners of that pornsite tell you to stop using it ?
It must be hard to post your tripe with a straight face, isn’t it ?

  3. “If you think of the passage of time, great economy, we need to price-fix companies to bring prices down, we need to judge people by their identity. What illegal immigrants and insecure open border? Joe does not have dementia. Trump bad. Hey, cause I say so I got a gun given to me by the state years ago and it’s been stored away all this time cause I say so, so that means ya’ll gun owners are a bunch of extreamist terrorists. Am I doing a good job faking my accents and pretending to be like you? I was black yesterday,
today I’m some other race so ya’ll people vote for me and I’ll make all Americans happy with the 15% tax increase I need to fund the elective abortions and sex change operations, and buy homes and cars for illegal immigrants and keep giving them benefits and money. Anyone got some ranch dressing to go with the rest of my word salad ’cause unburdened by what has been?”

  4. Nah. It’s not that at all. With all the federal cutbacks states can no longer afford the signs.
Look for speed and stop signs gone next.
Besides Gun Free Zones are a lie. Who here among us have ever found a free gun anywhere near a free gun zone.
I certainly haven’t, and believe you me I’ve spent almost as much time at the play ground looking for free guns as Joe Biden spent at the playground staring at the girls on the monkey bars.
    Well almost.

    • Now that’s a good point. I’ve never once found a free gun at a school, library, post office, rock concert, comedy show, nightclub, or county courthouse, where most of the “gun free zones” can be found. I can find the zone, but the free gun is just as hard to find as a Faberge egg in my 18-count from the grocery store!

      • You just have to be in the Right Place at the Right Time – like when Hallie disposed of Hunter Bidrunk’s gun in the trash across from the high school, but before the Secret Service may or may not have intervened and took it back out, then may have tried to confiscate the paperwork from the gunshop to disappear the incident… or maybe not – but who cares? – the entire Biden Crime Family got a free pass.

  5. The Supreme Court Will Decide These Gun Control Issues.

… about whether SCOTUS will take the Snope and Ocean State case, but did you know that they have already made some pretty significant decisions, with more to come? Washington Gun Law President, William Kirk, discusses two huge rulings that the Court will make. The first was heard, yesterday before the Court today, the other was a huge and resounding denial of a review in a case dealing with illegal immigrants.

    • Speaker Johnson directed the Sergeant at Arms to REMOVE Democrat Al Green from the chamber for constant disruptions! (note: and after that the democrats settled down some and remained seated and quiet mostly, and expressed their contempt for and hatred of the country and the American people by not acknowledging the victims of the Democrats crimes that were introduced and presented by Trump during the speech.)

      • And the sick twisted left-wing death cult lying media has its take on some of the Presidents speech, for example: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow is bitter over the fact that President Trump put the spotlight on a pediatric cancer patient and fulfilled his wish

        https://x.com/BonillaJL/status/1897137781341601818

(note: In the video, at the end, Rachel Maddow tells the 100% lie that Trump cut off funding for (pediatric) cancer research. This is a lie. Trump imposed a communications freeze on U.S. health agencies until a presidential appointee could review them. HHS in response to the Trump order then ordered the communications freeze on Jan. 22, 2025. This caused long-standing meetings designed to allocate grant money to medical research to be canceled without indication they would be rescheduled. One of those meetings concerned cancer research (which includes, of course, pediatric cancer). These meetings were mostly for funding for fiscal year 2026, and some other funding. The money for fiscal year 2025 was already dolled out in October 2024 for cancer research, so cancer research had already received its money for 2025 before Trump was elected. The communication freeze ended on 1 Feb 2025. So it is a 100% lie that Trump cut off funding for cancer research and pediatric cancer.)

  6. Gun Free Zones are “Victim In Waiting Zones”…..”Fish In A Barrel Killing Zones”

Politicians with laws never stop bad guys with guns, evil intent.
They only control the good guys, which is their true intent.

LEOs don’t go into the wild without guns. Citizens go into the same wild. Why would we be expected to venture out any less prepared. LEOs generally are less likely to be attacked by a bad guy with evil intent, than citizens, especially if the bad guy knows the citizens must be unarmed due to being in a Gun Free Zone. DUH moment!!!
