Being the dog-crazy people we are, we watched the first night of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show last night as we do every year. We don’t pay much attention to the toy group, but the parade of herding, non-sporting and hound group dog breeds is always entertaining.

We couldn’t help but notice the official AKC name of one of the hounds, specifically the Treeing Walker Coonhound.

The AKC describes Treeing Walker Coonhounds this way . . .

Few things can quicken a coon hunter’s pulse like the sight of this swift, tricolored hound in full stride—the long, muscular legs, the powerful and propulsive hindquarters, and the streamlined frame all working to cover maximum ground with minimum effort. Later, basking in the warmth of a campfire after an honest night’s work, this sweet-faced hound will look up and stir your soul with his gentle, pleading expression. Mercy, what a pretty picture! No wonder Treeing Walkers are called the People’s Choice.

OK then. And no, we don’t know if the governor of Virginia owns one.

Anyway, the TWC best-of-breed winner that showed in the hound group last night was named Bolt Action Concealed Weapon (we forgot to note his call name…duh). We don’t know a lot of bolt-action concealed carry guns, but it’s still a great name and we appreciate the effort.

gun dog names
Dan Z for TTAG

We’ve always had Labradors (none have ever been duck hunting) and named them after NHL goalies (long story). Some in search of the perfect name go with more generic options like Dakota, Rocky, Zeus, Shiloh, Rex, Brutus or Maverick.

But plenty of gun people we’ve met give their best friends — actual hunting dogs or not — ballistic monikers. We’ve heard true gun names like Remmy (Remington), Winchester, Ruger, Trigger, Gunner, Gauge, Magnum, Chase, Mossy and Colt. And Kimber. You know, real gun dog names.

Those may bot be the most politically correct names these day, but we couldn’t possibly care less. Do you name your dogs or other pets after your guns (or ammo or hunts or something else ballistically oriented)? Would you? What’s on your list of best gun dog names?

  1. I tried to make the last dog kalash but my wife would have none of it. I figured a Siberian husky deserved a proper Russian sounding name but him having blue eyes made a dune reference fairly well suited also.

  2. The first day of breed judging was Monday. BUT obedience and agility were held over the weekend. The agility is usually a lot of fun.

  3. One of my favorite dogs was named by the breeder”Patricks Remington,a red but Patrick’s Alvernon ” a pure 98%Bolio

  4. Mine were named after colors. Three Blues and one Red. My brother-in-law had a couple of labs named Weatherby and Ruger.

    • I had a great Treeing Walker Coon Hound named Lucy. Man, she could RUN! And loud, you could hear her five miles away. Now it’s German Shepherds Ruby and Doobie, and a Catchoula Bulldog named Molly that’s a BEAST. Plus three Chihuahuas inside that are great alarms, Sugar, Buster and Peanut.
      Now ya’ll know that.

      • Dogs provide a HUGE advantage in that early alert. They hear things LONG before we ever would.
That early alert and advantage can’t be overstate. When an adversary loses the element of surprise, advantage favors the intended target.

  5. Plotts got the shaft at Westminster this time around.

And no, with the exception of my first, I name my dogs after Egyptian gods and goddesses.

  6. I had a buddy a while back who named his full bred German Shep, Ruger.

A current friend of mine named one of his after John Wayne. My dog is already passed the name learning part, so I’ll have to wait until he goes and I get another.

  7. The two I got running around in the yard are really to sorry to haves names if they are in the front yard they might bark if somebody pulls up otherwise the only time they bark is if its after feeding time then they will stand at door and bark they remind me of pelosi and schumer maybe they would come if I called them that because they are that sorry

    • Hey, Chuck. Anyone who likes guns usually likes dogs. Or should. We talk about a lot of things here. Go in a gun store and try to keep the conversation on guns. Dare you.

  8. 4 labs here, two 17 yr olds, DAISY, EMMA, & one 2yr old , BUDDY, & one 1 1/2 yr old, PIPER, and one on the way, name is ARTHER MORGAN,,, we hunt a lot here.

  9. My friends and neighbors have all had dogs with these names from your list:
    — Zeus
    — Brutus
    — Remington
    — Gunner

I have only had one dog that my family named and we named her Murphy — as in Murphy’s Law! (All the rest of our dogs were rescues from the Humane Society and they already had names.)

  10. As an owner of two purebred coonhounds, an American English aka Redtick (Angela) and a Plott Hound (Mr. Jethro) the answer is no. I could see naming a dog JMB though.

  11. My Borador is named Lucille after Negan’s bat, not a gun but Household Six Actual gave me the ok so there you are. If I had known what she was going to be like in advance I would have named her Mannlicher. Darn pooch mucks up my glasses with welcome home kisses.

    • Had a cat named Mauser but she was a Mouser. Actually my chihuahuas were great mousers.
My favorite dog “gun” names would have to be #1 Ruger, Kimber, Sig, Bullet, Buckshot, Luger, Moses, Savage, Walther, Tikka, Kreighoff, Purdy, and Gunny (after Lee Ermey).
Sorry, but Trigger was and always will be a horse. Never a dog.
I named my big watch dogs after military: Patton, Doolittle, Rommel, & Nimitz.

  12. That is actually very tame for a Walker hound. Coonhounds are supposed to have names like that and have for generations historically. That one is kinda cool because it’s a play that is meant to offend, saying basically I have a rifle in my pants, lol, but it’s pretty tame. I write this as a kid who grew up in WV with nine coonhounds in the yard and several UKC Grand Night Champions among them. One of them I always liked most was “Dark Hollow Cocaine Jane.” The dogs were a reflection of the lifestyle, is the truth. Coonhunters are only of two camps, dangerous people who’d rob you blind, or preachers who’d rob you blind. 🙂 Most coonhunters hate the fact that hipsters have taken the Walker and promoted it so heavily in recent years. Will mean there will soon be all sorts of dogs that are crap for the hunt out there soon.

  13. My dogs name is Lucy, she is great dog but there are times I think Lucy is short for Lucifer. She will play “catch the ball” until my throwing arm is wore out or she passes out. Border Collies, they will have you trained in no time. Way smart, puts my friends kids to shame.

I would teach her math but she would probably cheat on my taxes.

  14. Had a terrier named colt, a mutt I found at the dump I named ruger and my rottie named after a beer. Guinness, who’s dad was named jaeger. None are around anymore, I have Guinnesses ashes loaded in a .45acp round I hang in my trucks rear view mirror.

    • HEY!!!! I like some people……..well there are a few folks I like…………….maybe a couple of people, one’s still alive.

      • I like people too! But, the more I am around some of them, the more I like being around dogs. Since we don’t have one at this time (at least for the moment) , I’ve sorta adopted our neighbor’s boxer rescue. He’s a good guy and his name is Logan.

  15. I’ve always thought a brace of Labs should be

    Winchester-Winny
    Remington-Remmey
    Mossberg- Mossie
    Maverick-Mavs
    Benelli-Benney or Ben
    Browning-Brownie or BrownBess
    Beretta-Rhett

You could always have a Topper, Pardner, Itchy (Ithaca) but Ruger should be reserved for rifle dogs the Red Label’s discontinued.

  16. Gat (ling Gun)
    Tommy (Gun)
    Popper (Pop Gun)
    Snubbie (Urban Dictionary)
    Jammie (Urban Dictionary)
    Heat, Heater (Urban Dictionary)
    Strap (Urban Dictionary)
    Roscoe (Urban Dictionary)
    Chopper (Urban Dictionary)

Wake the **** up people. These are GUNS as per the title of this post, not manufacturers, not ammunition, not anything but GUNS.

These are just some of the super obvious, easy to shout examples requiring zero imagination.

I hate dogs and unimaginative people.

  17. I’d get a French Bull dog and name him Chauchat or Sho Sho for short. It looks and sounds mean and scary but in the end its a total joke. The gun of course not the dog.

  18. Back in the 1970s, a family friend showed “Flintlock”, my father’s Gordon Setter, at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. He was a beautiful, very intelligent dog and took “Best of Breed”. The friend who brought him to the show used to hate when my dad took Flintlock hunting because he’d come back with his coat tangled and encrusted with mud. It would take hours to get him to look civilized again.

  19. We currently have a couple of hounds (brothers) named Bullet and Baer (after Les Baer). Not yet 1 year old and weighing in at 87 and 109 lbs, respectively.

  20. I’ve had a black mouth cur for the last nine years named Velo. I was writing an academic paper on the Velo-dog revolver when we found him.

  21. I would name a dog after a gun. I’ve already named my Beagle after the Sherman tank, relatively small, quick, easy to handle and the bark is worse than the bite.

  22. My son named his dog Remington. The dog did have a habit of “firing” (peeing) when he wasn’t supposed to, so I think it’s very appropriate. I suppose if people ask what breed he is I could always say “700”.

  23. got two english pointer/blue tick coon hound mixes, male & female, siblings that I rescued.
named them Mosin & Moonshine, a loud & deadly combination.

  24. Had a dog named Maggie. Best dog that a kid could have. Would shoot groundhogs and she’d retrive them. Part retreiver part shepard. I miss her. Best dog even if not a firearm name.

  25. My daughter named her kitten (now a cat) Benelli after watching a Duck Commander video with her brothers.
Something about brought to you by Benelli and she loved the name 😆 She was 3

  26. I had a chip. I called the dog the price for which I bought it back from the bad owners. My last German Shepherd I got from a very poor family who simply could not provide for her in any way. I got her for $50 and now I call her that and always tell my friends different names. Often the names of items that cost +-$50. The last time I told a friend of mine who is into editing my dog’s name is like your subscription program. He didn’t understand at first, and then I explained to him that a lifetime subscription to his programme costs the same as my dog. He didn’t believe me and then I showed him this site and he was convinced. By the way, he appreciated the comparison. There was also the fact that I called my dog “a dozen bigmucks”.
