If there’s one thing that gun-ban proponents really seem to hate, it is constitutional, or “permitless” carry. They like to describe such laws as “expanding Second Amendment rights” or “letting anyone carry a dangerous weapon.”
In fact, those descriptions couldn’t be further from the truth. What state legislatures that pass constitutional carry laws are really doing is deregulating the process of carrying a firearm for self-defense.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. It has further ruled that individual right includes the right to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense. Thus, constitutional carry laws simply return the process of carrying a firearm for self-defense back to the way it was at the founding of our nation.
Now, North Carolina lawmakers are seeking to make the Tar Heel State the latest to end the process of making lawful gun owners jump through government hoops and pay a fee to practice this Second Amendment-protected right.
According to a report at wcnc.com, Republicans in the North Carolina Senate have introduced a measure deregulating carry in that state. Of course, rather than saying that, wcnc.com, in typical “mainstream” media parlance, described the law as one that “would allow almost anyone 18 or older to carry a concealed handgun in public without having to acquire a concealed carry permit.”
In truth, states don’t need to “allow” carry since it’s protected by the Second Amendment. But I digress.
Senate Bill 50 is being called “Freedom To Carry NC,” and would do away with the state’s permit requirement. If passed, North Carolina would be the 30th state to have such a law on the books.
According to the wcnc.com report, Senate Leader Phil Berger killed a similar proposal back in 2023, but this time around is one of the sponsors of the measure.
“The General Assembly has made incredible strides to defend the Second Amendment rights of North Carolinians,” Berger’s office wrote. “There is still more we can do though.”
Of course, naysayers, including law enforcement organizations, are already going out of their way to denounce the proposal.
“If you don’t need the training, you don’t need to pay the expense to get the background check to earn a CCW permit, then it’s just anybody can do it,” Daniel Redford, the president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police told the news station.
Apparently, Redford and others opposing the bill haven’t noticed that none of the other states passing such legislation have had a corresponding increase in violent crime. That’s despite law enforcement organizations in many of those states also voicing opposition to the legislation.
Under the legislation, if passed, North Carolina residents could continue getting a concealed carry permit, if they wish, through the current process. In other states passing constitutional carry laws, many have done just that in order to take advantage of already existing reciprocal agreements between states.
“If you don’t need the training, you don’t need to pay the expense to get the background check to earn a CCW permit, then it’s just anybody can do it.”
I think Mr. JBT is starting to catch on.
Fire and Brimstone,
I am also thinking that Mr. Redford (the man who stated the quotation that you provided) does not want “the poors” to be able exercise their inalienable right to effective self-defense.
It makes me wonder what kind of mindset Mr. Redford has if he does not want “the poors” to be able to defend themselves effectively. Does he not trust “the poors”? If not, why?
Wanna see the heads explode? “Sure, training is easy. Teach gun safety in high school. Included in your transcript.” Stand back, don’t wanna get any on you.
Shouldn’t people get tired of making the same dead-horse, lame-ass arguments over and over as though their world exists in an insulated bubble no external data may enter?
Officer Clown let the real concern slip: …anybody can do it
Isn’t that always the threat? From the printing press to social media to the 3D printer. We just can’t let anyone do “it” whatever “it” is. Only certain people should be allowed to do “it.”
Shire-man,
Every so often it surprises me how many people have superiority complexes. Of course policy such as the proposal in this article threatens people’s superiority complexes when, “anybody can do it,” as you so aptly stated.
With many years as an “authority” there are a shocking # of total du mbasses running around in the wild with opinions/advise. ly are totally useless to actually DOING anything useful. One of my areas of expertise is rural firefighting – most everyone that has ever seen a campfire has an opinion on how to put out a house fire but have not fing clue (none have an opinion on preventing the fire or replanning). And this includes many firemen (FF is DEI BS). Is that a “superiority complex”?
neiowa,
What you described is a “know-it-all” complex.
A superiority complex is more along the lines of thinking that you are more important/valuable than the masses and should get special treatment/privileges that the masses do not get.
yes. it will.
I’m hoping that you’re right.
i am. but it won’t happen for 12yrs.
SB50 is not as simple as the reporting about it sounds. There are numerous legal traps within the text of it. Read it for yourselves.
What is a Carry Permit? A Carry Permit is a scheme where the state takes a right from the citizenry and sells it back to them. Says a lot about the nays.
I suggest reading up on World Economic Forum’s plan under project 2030. All human rights will be subjugated down to permissions by a ‘New World Order’ abolishing all rights of the individual “It’s for the greater good” is their mantra.
This bunch of clowns took a major hit in Nov24 when the US soundly defeated such statis BS. So sad.
Debbie, please inform your doctors that we approve of your current dosing. Thank you for taking, and continuing to take your prescribed medication.
unicorn whisperer,
Your comment was funny! Thank you for the laugh today!
” please inform your doctors that we approve of,,,,,,,,”
Hope an earthquake never hits the land of unicorn whisper land a lot of pedestals would fall.
It’s only twenty seven words for a reason.
According to the wcnc.com report, Senate Leader Phil Berger killed a similar proposal back in 2023, but this time around is one of the sponsors of the measure.
Trump Effect? Berger noticed that the culture changed. Is he another play it safe, follow the mob politician?
… aren’t they ALL ??
YES
NO many still have not noticed the sea change – Demtard party is floundering rudderless. MSM and US auto companies are refusing to notice that anything has changed.
For example Ford is doubling down on stupid.
h ttps://www.breitbart.com/tech/2025/02/06/ev-fiasco-ford-lost-5-1-billion-on-electric-vehicles-in-2024/
GM has an incompetent moron broad running the joint so can expect more of the same. Euros own/run Chrysler so no hope there.
MSM is totally defiant in thee face of their rejection/failure.
They were told that gas powered vehicles would be outlawed in the near future. There has to be a lot of uncertainty in the automobile market right now. Hopefully, we can go forward with Trump Era common sense. That means we stop making a nonviable market look somewhat viable by propping it up with subsidies.
Went to school with Phillip. Never liked him. I hope he doesn’t change his mind again. He was not a gun person in our younger days.
I live in the great purple state of NC. In 2023 and 24, we had a veto proof majority in both House and Senate. Why didn’t they do so then? King Cooper would have vetoed it, but an override was certainly most likely.
And it will take that same ratio to pass this – strange as it may seem, NC went for Trump in both 2016 and 2020, but elected a D governor, and a Republican Lt. Governor. In 2024, that Lt. Governor, an African American conservative, ran for the top seat, and lost to a Democratic former DA. My guess is that he would veto such a measure.
Both US Senators are R’s (if you include the term Rhino for one!), don’t know the US House representation, but 3 of the seats gained were from here, so it’s significantly in favor of the Republicans. Go figure the rationale of all that.
Sure would be nice to join the other 29…….
Michael J. Kraxberger,
Here is an all-too-common political tactic regarding legislation that fires up the base of the majority party in the legislature but is offensive to “moderate” voters and could lead to losing the next election cycle:
Majority party of legislature overwhelmingly passes legislation that they KNOW the minority party governor will veto–and then the majority party in the legislature somehow fails to override the veto. Majority party in the legislature can then claim (to their base) that they voted for their pet policy and its failure to become law rests solely on the shoulders of the minority party’s governor. Of course, since the legislation never became law, “moderate” voters are largely satisfied and will not vote against the majority party in the legislature in the next election.
I saw the exact same thing happen in my state.
I like Mark Robinson, but they caught him saying some stupid and embarrassing stuff online by tracking his IP address. Republicans abandoned him. Before that, I thought he had a shot. I explained to my children, at a young age, that the internet is forever.
Thanx 4 info
When I was a kid in the 80’s to buy a handgun in NC you had to first get a permit to purchase from the county sheriff then you could buy a handgun from a FFL dealer. Is that still a thing?
What in the New York fuck is that nonsense. I believe it was a thing but never would have thought it would be in recent history (let’s say within 50 years)
The pistol permit scheme in NC was only done away with in 2023.
Utterly amazed it went on that long but glad to hear it is dead. And recent example for several other states to follow (likely be made to follow)
Not likely to happen anytime soon.
The democratic governor will definitely veto the the bill the second it hits his desk…and while the Republicans contol both houses, they don’t have the numbers to obtain a 2/3 margin to override a veto.
Will N.C. Be The 30th Constitutional Carry State?
Possibly but I have my doubts. And I have questions. Why did Berger shut down the bill in 2023? And why is he sponsoring the same bill now? Could it possibly be because Republicans no longer have veto proof majorities in both the House and the Senate as they did 2023? And is Berger a slime ball politician masquerading as a 2A advocate? The only one I know the answer to is the last one. And it is a definitive yes.
I keep my NC carry permit current and plan to always do so. Even so, I hope this passes. The more law abiding citizens that are carrying, the better.
Yep, I keep my AL CCW permit up to date. Two reasons: When I’m carrying out of State (in friendly territory) and because the funds help my local county sheriff’s office keep up to date on equipment.
NC will not get constitutional carry because the new governor is a Democrat. I don’t think the NC Republicans support constitutional carry either. I guess we shall see.
