illinois gun control fingerprints FOID

Whenever the massive, expensive, inefficient, rights-impinging jobs programs that operate this country’s gun control bureaucracies fail, the solution is always to enact still more restrictions on law-abiding gun owners. So the Illinois State Police’s failure in issuing the Aurora shooter (a felon) a FOID card now means the rest of the state’s gun owners will have even more hurdles to jump in order to keep and bear arms. Same as it ever was.

Three bills filed in the Illinois General Assembly would require authorities to collect fingerprints from people applying for state gun licenses or, alternatively, allow people seeking a state Firearms Owner’s Identification card to provide their fingerprints to the Illinois State Police as part of their background checks.

The latest was introduced this week by state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake. It’s part of a package that would go beyond fingerprinting to also require background checks for private sales between individuals, reduce the time a FOID card is valid from the current 10 years to five before requiring a new application and require the state police to take steps to seize weapons from people whose gun licenses have been revoked. The bill also would give the state police greater discretion to deny permits to carry concealed firearms.

  1. Business as usual, whenever politicians fuck up, first reaction is to shift blame and make someone else pay. Especially if they happen to be democrat!

    • What do you expect, everyone here was complaining about Illinois NOT “getting” the gun back. But then they all complain when they try and fix the problem.

I pointed out that the FOID system did not fail. The issue was the Mississippi did not put him into the national database. There there is no way for the State Police to prove that he still had the firearm. Yes he lied on his FOID form, but what DA want to fill up the courts with cases like that. Some Chicago DA tried that about 10 years ago, and I think all that happened was a few convictions and a very pissed off court system.

But no, most of the TAG comment was the Illinois screwed up, so please protect us all and don’t let it happen again.

Well this is the crap you get.

      • If it was an OFWG in a rural area that got caught lying on a permit/FOID application, they’d prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.

We should all demand equal protection so that OFWGs can only be subjected to the same charges that are plea bargained down to for a gang banger in Chicago. That way, all real firearms violations will be swapped to a violation committed with a toy gun.

    • Mississippi screwed up. So I guess the issue is when a blue state tries to deal with the screw up of a red one.

      • So 90 days to get a FOID, forms, fingerprints, back-round checks. Then the exact same procedure to purchase a firearm after receiving a FOID, plus three day wait after approval, and none of this is a 2nd amendment infringement….

…but ask to see an ID (maybe 30 seconds) when voting AND IT’S RACIST!!!

The tragic irony is… that 30 second ID check will save more lives than ANY gun law would.

Right? And now you need to be 21 to purchase a firearm, buy let’s lower the voting age to 16.

Progressives have no shame and will continue to change every rule until they achieve ultimate power and control over you.

  2. That’s all of government and law. Create an office to tackle a problem. Problem persists. Create an office to oversee that first office. Repeat ad infinitum.

    • Exactly, and from the article, former ATF employees. Look where they go to work after their government pension kicks in;

But in Illinois, as in most of the country, handgun buyers are checked just through basic biographical and descriptive information.

“It’s a massive hole,” said Mark Jones, a former agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who is senior policy director for the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence in Chicago.

  3. Never ascribe to ignorance, incompetence or stupidity what can easily be explained as government cunning and malevolence. (there are no “unintended consequences”)

      • “If I remember correctly, it’s the other way around.”

The sequencing was/is deliberate and intentional. Spend some time inside the federal monster, and you will understand.

        • “Former DNC/rino staffers and campaign workers?”

As a matter of numbers/bodies, those categories are insignificant (power and influence is another matter). Like all “good” bureaucracies, ours is filled with people whose natural instinct is to resist any constraint on their fiefdoms. As the saying goes, “Executives (rulers) come and go, but the bureaucracy remains forever.”

Held positions in three different federal agencies. One of the most enlightening experiences was to learn that failings/errors in process discovered by one IG inspection were considered failings again in subsequent IG inspections…even though the failings were corrected after the first inspection. This concept of failings was designed to ensure IG inspectors would never find an organization without error (no errors, no need for inspections, no need for bodies and budget).

In a different agency, the political appointee director delegated certain authorities to lower level management. Regulations specifically prohibited such delegation. During an IG inspection, it was learned that many supervisory employees were exercising forbidden authority. The appointed director launched punitive actions against those managers for violating directives. The director’s actions in making the delegation were never questioned (Dimwitocrat administration). Most of the managers were suspended and demoted. New managers were delegated the same prohibited authorities. A subsequent re-visit by the IG found the error had not been corrected, and the second set of managers were punished. I left the agency before the next re-inspection.

        • Sam it’s a bit scary that issues that get appointed officials dismissed (well sometimes if it is Tax & Finance or Health) are glossed over at the national level. I am a bit disturbed it is as bad or worse than NY

      • Getting more sjw hires squeezed through (whole other level of “special” to make that happen) and many policy writers are increasingly contractors and consultants. I will let you guess who some of those firms are connected to.

  4. I believe IL should pass a law requiring all individuals in the State to wear their underwear on the outside of their clothing. This way the State can see everyone is wearing clean underwear.

    • Didn’t Woody Allen already say that publicly in his 1971 film “Bananas”? Either he or Mickey Rose probably wrote the line. Don’t you dare add the changing the national language to Swedish or you’ll hang for plagiarism for sure;-) I

  5. Easy solution.

Step 1) Repeal all gun laws.
Step 2) Remove prohibitions when people protect themselves: castle doctrine, stand your ground, etc.
Step 3) Prosecute real criminal use of guns: murder, robbery, etc.
Step 4) Enjoy the drop in crime!

    • I would need to get into the therapy racket to cash in on the “PTSD” this would cause in the capital region if it were to pass…….. and/or start up a line of kevelar lined garments in Troy and Schenectady.

      • Eh it would be ugly for the first few months to a couple of years (results and perceptions may vary by location) but we almost have a few states that are close to that scenario in some of the categories. My county would be a mix of Maine and the purge.

        • We lived that scenario till we showed up on the libtards radar as being uninformed and ripe for reeducation!

        • Dennis we have had them try for decades, our only protection is how corrupt/incompetent Albany is as the central government. The SALT cap may oddly help as well by forcing spending cuts…… or see something drastic.

    • “After a shooting spree they always try to take the guns away from those who didn’t do it…”
      William S. Burroughs

  6. Hey they wanted to prohibit “high capacity” mags ’cause a convicted felon(obviously an ill gotten gun) had 32 round glock mags. Shot an unarmed gungho po-leece captain to death last year. But it was every gun owner’s fault. They f##k up-we suffer…how hard is it to establish residency in Indiana without actually living there?!?😏👀

    • I’m with you 100% but Indiana is filling up with idiots from Illinois and more importantly, cook county. These idiots are leaving to avoid taxes and the political corruption but still will be voting democratic in Indiana, thus bringing another state down with them.

  7. Who here is surprised when a government exhibits incompetence? All governments are incompetent, the more blue the state, the more government you get. I suspect that government incompetence is not just additive, but increases faster the larger government gets.

    • “All governments are incompetent, the more blue the state, the more government you get.”

It is not incompetence, it is deliberate. The more problems you have, the more government you need to fix things. The more things you have to fix, the more government you need. Ever wondered why all the terribly managed blue cities don’t ever change their means and methods? Ever wonder why Dimwitocrats and liberals double down on that which makes things worse for everyone but the elites? It is not ignorance, nor incompetence. And people by the millions like it.

  8. I don’t live in IL, but I do reside in MA where the .gov takes fingerprints in connection with gun licenses.

At this point, I’ve been fingerprinted so many times (stockbroker bond; license to practice law; permits in several states etc.) that my blood type is “Ink.”

Background checks for private sales? NICS was supposed to be an open system, allowing concerned citizens to perform background checks for private gun sales. This was changed late in the process so that NICS was restricted to FFLs. Why?

Form 4473, that’s why. The feds can yank an FFL’s license if he doesn’t maintain his files, but they could not enforce maintenance requirements against non-FFLs. And you can’t have a gun registry without the 4473.

Let’s face it — the background check is a scam. It’s all about the 4473.

  9. Delaware is going down the same road. Bills are in the state house now to 1) ban “assault weapons”; 2) ban standard capacity mags; 3) require a purchase permit to buy guns 4) require fingerprinting to get a purchase permit. I’m thinking maybe it’s time for me to move back to North Carolina.

Not that anyone gives a crap about Delaware– second smallest state in the Union, only 3 electoral votes. Might as well be the lower three counties of Pennsylvania. Or worse– the way it’s headed, we might as well be the eastern-most counties of Maryland.

    • We have to call it what it is. Delaware is proposing a semiauto ban. Townsend copy and pasted from the Maryland ban then added more.

Good news is that at the rally yesterday there were 600 progun people to the few dozen Mom’s Demand Control shills.

      • Hate to burst your bubble, but our rally had upwards of 3,000 people, the ” moms” had exactly 6. We now have four or five new gun laws on the books. See a pattern here?

        • “Hate to burst your bubble, but our rally had upwards of 3,000 people, the ” moms” had exactly 6. We now have four or five new gun laws on the books. See a pattern here?”

Rallies are not designed to influence votes, but to gather publicity and hopefully encourage the unicorns undecideds to vote differently in the elections. The legislators do not look at the general drift, but at their constituencies, their voters. Regardless of the overall popular vote, politicians vote for what gets them elected, not what matters outside that. Like Republicrat politicians, gun-grabbers know their non-radicals are captive to the leftist wing. Dimwitocrat politicians know their “normals” will not abandon them.

        • Actually, rallys are intended to demonstrate to our lawmakers that we’ve had enough. But, as you pointed out, the numbers on the other side sway the votes. Thus, thumbing their noses at us is not only acceptable, it probably arouses them.

        • “Thus, thumbing their noses at us is not only acceptable, it probably arouses them.”

It at least validates their opinions of themselves, and impresses them with their power to control. Read yesterday that a Demoncrat conference on the budget blew up because the radical caucus refused to play, then they high-fived over how powerful the new radical wing is.
