Over in the Ministry of Newspeak, the leading lights who run the Merriam-Webster dictionary have taken the occasion of the Parkland massacre to update their definition of what constitutes an “assault rifle”. Here’s the pre-Parkland version:

noun:  any of various automatic or semiautomatic rifles with large capacity magazines designed for military use

Now . . .

noun: any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire

Got that? According to M-W, any rifle that even looks like a scary AR or AK is a weapon of war.

We, the People of the Gun, lost this definitional battle long ago. The forces of civilian disarmament have successfully labeled pretty much any long gun an assault weapon, as long as it’s black and semi-automatic. And it has a couple of innocuous, utterly meaningless features about which politicians and gun grabbers are utterly ignorant.

Citing actual history and pointing out little things like facts about what truly makes a rifle an assault weapon is just an exercise in futility now. Besides, we’ve already been upbraided in the pages of the Washington Post for having the temerity to point out errors on the part of those who would dearly love to ban these and other firearms from civilian use. You don’t want to be accused of gunsplaining, do you?

Still, words mean things. And even if it’s only for our own satisfaction, it’s nice to be accurate when we talk about America’s most popular long guns. So go ahead, give us your definition of an assault rifle.

  1. An assault rifle is an intermediate caliber, full auto rifle.

The current AR15 was not designed for military use, it is a semi-automatic rifle that was specifically designed for civilian use.

There is no such thing as an assault weapon.

      • Hmm… I knew ‘sturm’ meant storm, however it seems to have the same dual meaning in German as it does in English where you might say ‘storm the beaches’ or ‘have fun storming the castle’. So you are correct.

      • Sturmgewehr means assault rifle. This was later nazi propaganda.
With the design of cartridge settled, contracts were placed with Carl Walther and Haenel for the production of suitable rifles. The resulting weapons were known as the Maschinenkarabiner 42-MkB42(H) and MkB42(W).
As a result of their reports the Haenel pattern was selected for further development, particularly as far as simplification for mass-production was concerned, and the finalized design was issued as the Machine Pistol MP43.
The nomenclature ‘Machine Pistol’ arose not from any attempt at security but was due to internal politics.

Most German soldiers referred to it as a Machine Pistol.

        • According to Google translate. Sturm means storm. “Storm” as in assault. Gewehr means gun.

        • The designation SturmGewehr (StGw) was assigned to a full-auto, rifle caliber weapon – designated StGw44a. This was to differentiate it from the MaschinenPistole (MP), a full-auto, pistol caliber weapon; such as the MP38 and MP40; and the MaschinenGehwehr (MG), a full-auto, squad weapon (MG34, MG42.)

Simply put the assault rifle is a fully automatic or selective fire rifle firing a rifle bullet.

        • MacofJack (Live in Germany?): Yes, but in the land of pastel unicorns, unknown onomatopoeia is even more frightening.

    • Unarmed victims are an assault to my sence of justice .
I demand a requirement for an ‘ Unarmed Permit ‘ by strate law, that non gun owners must have . costing 12$ a year.
      exemptions ;
      1. if have 1 or more registered guns with the state.
      2. under 21

WHY? BECAUSE IT TAKES PEOPLE WITH GUNS TO PROVIDE DETURRENCE for there safety.

    • Sammy,

“There is no such thing as an assault weapon.”

And, as you correctly added: sturmgewehr means “assault _rifle_”.

    • Assault weapon – n. Any hand held firearm capable of propelling a small metal pebble fast enough to punch a hole in meat. A recent invention – assault weapons were first invented during the Reagan administration by Russian interest groups in order to sow chaos in American minority neighborhoods. Since then, they have been indiscriminately handed out to known gang members by members of the National Rifle Association who do so under the protection of the outdated and widely misinterpreted Second Amendment. The definition is variable and amenable to the context of the topic: a firearm that is not a assault weapon when held by an approved individual will immediately become an assault weapon if held by a member of a disfavored group.

      • Unarmed victims are an assault to my sence of justice .
I demand a requirement for an ‘ Unarmed Permit ‘ by state law, that non gun owners must have . costing 12$ a year.
        exemptions ;

        2. under 21

WHY? BECAUSE IT TAKES PEOPLE WITH GUNS TO PROVIDE DETURRENCE for there safety.

  2. I use the terms select-fire and semi-automatic firearms. The term assault rifle is for the willfully ignorant. Which, sadly, is the majority of the voting bloc.

    • Assault rifle is an actual and correct term–just not correct for AR15s. Sturmgewehr means assault rifle.

Assault weapon is a term made-up term by gun grabbers designed to fool the ignorant and stupid. It has done its job well.

  3. An assault rifle is an intermediate power automatic (NOT Semi-automatic) rifle used by the military.

The second amendment exists as a check on our government, so the people’s maltia should have a weapon equal to that of the threat. Should the standing army be used to subvert the constitutional garrenttes, trying to stop it with bolt action hunting rifles would not be effective.

    • An assault rifle is one used by armies to attack the enemy. No modern army would consider fielding any rifle that does not have automatic capability.

  4. “A leftist progressive apparition representing their deepest fear; a self sufficient populace that does not worship at the foot of the state.”

  5. An ‘assault rifle’ is any rifle that assaults another rifle. For instance, the Mossberg 464SPX is an assault on the Winch ester 1894 rifle, therefore the 464 is an ‘assault rifle’.

  6. Bottom line: Elitists want to create a specially armed class of government employees. **

    That never ends well.

The only thing under “assault” is your intelligence and your natural right to self defense.

** I don’t really under stand people who compain “assault rifles” are not “used by the military.” So what if they are? The natural right of self defense means that you have the right to be as well armed as criminals and government employees.

  7. Any air cooled gas operated and shoulder fired weapon firing an intermediate cartridge with a max effective range of 300-800 meters and capable of at least 3 modes of fire: SAFE, SEMI, BURST, AUTO or any combination there of. Weapon will usually be fed from a box magazine and can vary in caliber and lenghth from full length rifles (20 in barrel) to Personal Defense Weapons (6 in barrel). Weapon may also be set up in different formats either traditional rifle format or a bull pup design placing the action of the weapon further back and enabling a more compact weapon overall while retaining a full length barrel. Popular examples include: M16, M14, M4, AK47, AKM, AK74, FAMAS, GALIL, CETME, TAVOR, AND MANY OTHERS.

NOTE: WEAPON MUST HAVE ALL FEATURES LISTED TO BE CLASSED AS AN ASSAULT RIFLE. NO YOUR BUDDY’S AR15 DOES NOT does not COUNT AS AN ASSAULT RIFLE.

Moltar has spoken and now grows tired of these pathetic humans and their constant need to redefine the English language.

    • The CETME isnt gas operated nor does it fire an intermediate cartridge… stop spreading fake news (sarc).

      • The cetme model L was a 5.56 caliber select fire rifle that replaced the cetme model c in Spanish military service in the late 80s.

  8. I don’t have any definition. I don’t use the term at all. Refuse to play word games with idiots.

And nobody is going to confiscate any of my other guns as long as I’m alive.

    • Multiple thumbs up. I have explained the military use of the term ( the ability of the same weapon to effectively engage targets at 500 to 800 yards as a rifle and the ability to engage close targets with automatic fire at 100 yards or less) and been greeted with a “huh” followed by “well, we have to do something!” My answer now is “I don’t give a f@#€$ what you think the definition is, you can’t have mine.” Usually puts an end to the discussion.

  9. Its whatever the changing narrative evolves into in order to disarm a free people.. Liberals can screw off, they are domestic enemies, everything they say is traitorous and dishonest. They are not American citizens and should be stripped of their citizenship… End of conversation.. Its time to revolt.

  10. Bullshit. It doesn’t make any difference. This is all incrementalism. After they have your AR and your AK’s, Minis are next along with Shields and 10/22’s. Stop compromising. The left’s understanding of compromise means they don’t get everything they want, THIS year. And that’s ok with them cause they’ll come back next year and get a little more. Eventually they get it all.

    • Exactly. You’ve accurately described the crux of the issue. Today, it’s the AR. Next the Mini. Then all double-stack mag capable pistols. Eventually, they’ll whittle it down to include my son’s single-shot H&R .22 Pal.

    • My assult rifle gender self identifies as a mini-14 and prefers to be searched by a pro-2nd ammendment police officer…. preferably not at all, but thats not an option in California.

  11. Gun grabbers state think that somehow, although other countries have become a tyranny, ours will not, and therefore, there is no need for armed citizens.

I agree that it is not likely that our government will become a tyranny. It is because its citizens ARE armed.

  12. Who Cares. The only definition of Importance is “Shall Not Be Infringed”. Remember why 4/19/1775 is so important in our history. Keep Your Powder Dry…

  13. Assault is an Action and not an item. I can make any item be it a weapon or not and make it an Assault Weapon by using it in a physical attack on someone or something.

So defining an object as an Assault Weapon that has not been the actual item used in a physical attack is incorrect, and an attempt to just be a fear monger.

So Assault Weapons as a category or collective of items as defined above (and in many other places) is bogus and an attempt to cause turmoil and trouble.

So remember Assault is an ACTION not an ITEM!

  14. Is he (Andrew Lawrence) really a senior researcher for Media Matters and not a plant from our side to make them look stupid?

  15. The problem is, we have allowed the anti Second Amendment crowd to define the terms.
A firearm is a tool which possesses no evil intent on its own. Assigning intent to an inanimate object is the epitome of insanity. Demonizing a weapon on “looks alone” also marks the accuser as an unstable individual who is also insane. Call them out on their illogic and insanity.
Another dirty tactic the anti-Second Amendment crowd uses exposes children to potential and actual harm by putting them in “gun-free zones”. These people care not one wit about children, but uses them for their own nefarious purposes.
We need to TAKE BACK the argument…
When the antis blame the firearm for the actions of a criminal, state that: “a firearm is an inanimate object, subject only to the intent of the user. Firearms ARE “equalizers” and are used to preserve life and make a 90 lb. woman equal to a 200 lb. criminal”.
When the antis attempt to justify their “gun free zones” counter their misguided argument with “you mean, criminal safety zones” or “victim disarmament zones”.
State that “we protect our money, banks, politicians and celebrities, buildings and facilities with PEOPLE WITH GUNS, but protect our children with “gun-free zone” signs”.
When the antis state that: “you don’t need and AR-15”, counter with, “Who are YOU to consider what I need or want?”
When the antis criticize AR-15s in general, counter with: “you mean the most popular rifle of the day, use able by even the smallest, weakest person as a means of self-defense. Besides, AR-15s are FUN to shoot”. Offer to take them to the range and supply them with an AR-15, ammunition and range time. I have made
    many converts this way.
When the antis state that: “You don’t need an AR-15 to hunt with”, counter with “AR-15s ARE used for hunting, but in many states, are prohibited from being used to take large game because they are underpowered”.
When the antis state that: “AR-15s are high powered rifles”, correct them by stating that “AR-15s with the .223 or 5.56mm cartridge are considered medium-powered weapons–NOT “high-powered” by any means”.
When the antis state that: “the Constitution was written during the time of muskets, and that the Second Amendment should only apply to “weapons of that time period”, state that: “by your logic, the First Amendment should not apply to modern-day telecommunications, internet, television, radio, public-address systems, books and newspapers produced on high-speed offset printing presses. Only “town-criers” and Benjamin Franklin type printing presses would be covered under the First Amendment”.
When the antis state that “only law enforcement and government should possess firearms”, remind them of the latest school shooting, as well as Columbine, where “law enforcement” SAT ON THEIR HANDS while children were being murdered, citing “officer safety”, afraid to challenge the shooter, despite being armed to the hilt. The government-run murderous sieges at Ruby Ridge and Waco are also good examples of government (mis)use of firearms. Let’s not forget the millions murdered under communism by their governments AFTER their firearms were confiscated.
This tome can be used to counter any argument against any infringement of our Second Amendment.

  16. I have had to argue with anti gunners that AR means Armalite Rifle model 15. They call BS because they have never heard of Armalite or Mr. Stoner!! And they don’t care to know Ben when I tell them to use their phones to look it up

  17. There is not your or my definition of assault rifle. There is simply a correct and a wrong definition of assault rifle.
The correct one was implemented by the military that was responsible for designing, producing and classifying such rifles (or translating it from german and giving contracts to Armalite/Colt, but you get the idea). The correct definition is that an assault rifle is a intermediate rifle with select-fire (full-auto) capability.
This is what the term means.

    • Agreed. HOWEVER, an Assault WEAPON is whatever a Legislative body, state or federal, defines it to be. To be clear, “assault rifle” is a military term, “assault weapon” is a civil government term. With just one caveat: the civil definition of “assault weapon” is inclusive of any arm defined by the military as an “assault rifle,” as well as all semiautomatic rifles of similar appearance.

  18. These gun grabbers should revisit the definitions for the following: “Civil War” and “genocide”. Once these feral leftists force the first, there will be no stopping the consequences they’ll suffer in the second.

    • It is true. History teaches us that there is almost always a cause-and-effect in these kinds of things. If the left keeps up their modern Bolshevik style pseudo revolution against a free, armed people, it will undoubtedly lead to some sort of civil war or armed conflict, and many of these leftist will face certain annihilation. But beware, we are a long — long — way from this. The left is loud, obnoxious, and think they are invincible, but rest assured, they are quite weak. Today, we ought find a more subtle way to remind these leftist of histories lessons, but not something that will scare them into their safe spaces. 🙂

  19. From the above definitions is seems that a BAR is not an assault rifle, and as such should be free to keep and bear . . . unless , of course, Wikipedia has goofed-up the definition of intermediate cartridge. I then goes without saying that if an assault rifle ban is ever implemented, the NFA restrictions on full auto non-assault rifles (such as the BAR) should be repealed.
It all makes as much sense as the rest of the liberals mental machinations. . .

    • You’re right, it’s not an assault rifle, it’s a light machine gun. Both categories are covered by the NFA already.

  20. Guys that Andrew L. in the Twitter post is a POTG trolling everyone. Take the link and look at his replies. They are actually pretty funny. He says he doesn’t need to research anything because he went to “Ask Jeeves” which has been gone for years and Ask Jeeves says it stands for Assault Rifle. Also AK means “American Killer”. Don’t forget what today is.

  21. My definition of the term “Assault Rifle”….. Hate speech used by anti civil-rights bigots to preach their dark gospel of intolerance and prejudice against fellow citizens who value their liberty.

  22. Infantry small arms are exactly the type of arms protected by the Second Ammendment. So if we accept this definition that semi-auto only AR-15s and AKs are “assault rifles,” then we have to fight to dispel the myth that “assault rifles”, including the select fire variants, aren’t protected by the Second Ammendment.

Just as hardly anybody wants to restrict popular speech, hardly anyone wants to strip civilians of their hunting and sporting arms, but that’s not what our Bill of Rights is for. The First and Second Amendments protect unpopular speech and military arms, precisely because they’re the most likely to be restricted otherwise.

That said, we need to control the terminology. I never liked Hitler’s name for these types of firearms: “sturmgewehr” literally storm rifle or assault rifle. I greatly prefer the original term used by German engineers to describe this class: “machine carbine.”

  23. Assault Rifle – any rifle subject to assault by ignorant, fearful or politically motivated individuals, usually under the guise of promoting public safety

  24. People shouldn’t use the propagandists’ terms or phrases. When you do use them you are aiding the propagandists in their manipulation of the public. Don’t take part in that disinformation campaign.

People don’t even know how a gun works. So the terminology isn’t set in stone. The ignorant just parrot what they hear from people “more informed” than them or from sources of entertainment. Which means there is an opening to insert a proper understanding as people don’t like sounding dumb.

If you let young people go around calling certain guns “sniper rifles” and magazines as “clips,” of course you are going to have a problem retaining the 2nd Amendment (or anything else). You have to use proper words because what words you use is very important and kids need to know that. When you get older the nuances of words are a big deal because people will always try to take advantage of your ignorance. For instance, when you sign a contract, definitions of a words or the way a sentence is worded can have a different outcome than what you were lead to believe before signing.

When I was very young I was already strict in the words I used and the clarity of my sentences. A family member would get upset with me because I would take their speech for what it was rather than what they meant. I did that to prove the point that the words you use and how you put them together is very important. They would get agitated because I knew what they meant, but I would either ask for clarification or would take their speech as is. I did not concede regardless of the arguing that would come from not doing so. They eventually started to speak more accurately as they weren’t happy with the heavy resistance and they realized my point when they had to work with strangers everyday.

Kids get a lot of their information from entertainment. Most males learn about guns from video games. If a game calls a bolt action a “sniper rifle,” when those kids become adults they will go into a gun shop asking to see the “sniper rifles.” When a TV show uses the word “clip” to refer to a magazine, everyone that watches that show will start calling a magazine a “clip.” People take a fictional world to be reality because they get no counter to the fantasy. Hence why people think you can shoot someone in the thigh and they will live instead of die within 5 minutes. People need someone to make it clear what is fact and what is friction, otherwise they will live a fantasy/lie.

I stay away from words/terms like: assault rifle, sniper rifle, sporting rifle, hunting rifle, machine gun, sub machine gun, assault weapon, armor piercing, silencer. I stick to the more literal, basic or long winded. I do that to counter the disinformation that is constantly being spread by the majority (including gun owners). The more people do that the less the propagandists’ words will be effective in confusing the public and the more it exposes their agenda of trying to get people to ignore the “fine print.”

Using “natural orange flavor” doesn’t mean they actually use oranges in their drink.

  25. How about the Army definition?
    It is capable of selective fire;
    It has an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle, such as the 7.92×33mm Kurz, the 7.62x39mm and the 5.56x45mm NATO;
It has ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine; and
It has an effective range of at least 300 metres (330 yards).

  26. Didn’t the Miller decision require the firearms protected by the 2nd Amendment to have military utility?

If so, “assault rifles” should be protected, right?

    • Absolutely. Ironically, the Miller case was used to defend the regulation of short barrel shotguns, despite the fact that they had been used by the US military in WW1. The military currently uses 14 inch barrel Mossberg 590A1s and the 14.5 inch barrel M4. It’s impossible to argue those don’t have utility to a militia. To argue that the Second Ammendment doesn’t protect the civilian ownership of such arms is willfully ignorant or an argument in bad faith.

    • Miller requires nothing. Miller was a show trial that intentionally and repeatedly violated the law on how criminal proceedings are to me held.

  27. A rifle cannot be called an “assault” rifle until it has been charged, provided counsel, tried, and convicted by a jury of its’ peers in a fair an open trial. This is called due process, people!

Fun 4/1 fact: most rifles manage to plead their charges down to “disorderly conduct” or “failure to pay full time and attention.” Some can even get community service time or proceedings deferred on continued good behavior. Very few rifles actually get convicted of being “assault” rifles.

  28. One of the dumbest parts of this whole ‘assault weapon’, ‘assault rifle’, ‘military style’ stupidity is that the antis think it matters because they make the assumption that if it is like what the military uses it is necessarily deadlier than something ‘not-military’. Seriously, who cares if the ARs out there are military “style” or not. It doesn’t matter what a gun is unless someone uses to commit murder and, if murder is what you choose to commit, it doesn’t matter much if you do it with an AR or not. I don’t see why this is hard to understand and I also don’t see why the antis seem to think so many people are killed by ARs when rifles, total, are only used in a few hundred murders each year and those rifles used in that manner represent a tiny fraction of the rifles in private hands.

I’ve had antis act as though they have a “gotcha” moment when they say, “Oh yeah, if and AR-47K9 supershooter isn’t the most deadly thing in existence, why does the army use it?”

When I inform them that the 5.56 NATO M4 and similar weapons are used by the military because they are relatively light, cheap and, as far as the DOD is concerned, deadly enough, many insist that I’m trying to lie to them. I’ll show them a 30-06, a .270 a 12 gauge shell and a .223 and ask them which they think an AR uses, and when they get it wrong and I inform them that they are wrong, I’ve had some insist that the “little one” must have some secret extra lethal property that I either don’t know about or am trying to hide.

I cannot decide if these twits are so dumb that they actually believe that 5.56 is somehow a super killer or if they recognize that, if it is not, their narrative falls apart and the cognitive dissonance will not allow them to admit that.

    • It’s not just the antis. If I had a dollar for every person that told me how their sidearm was previously “police issue” as if that somehow made is more effective… Also, I’ve heard too many gun owners tell how extra lethal the 5.56 is. There is obviously enough stupid to go around.

      • I think that the gullibility of many in the general population is why those antis that know they are spreading propaganda keep screaming at the top of their lungs, “Assault, Military, Super Deadly, High Capacity”, and whatever other scary sounding superlative they can come up with it – at least some folk believe their screeching.

I’ve had people claim they “know” that 5.56 is more deadly because of whatever claptrap they claim. When I show them what a 55gr .224 caliber fmj bullet does to a target like ballistic gel, or a deer, compared to a 165gr, .308 caliber soft point they seem to believe that there is some unique property of human anatomy that the tiny little fmj round seeks out and destroys. I’ve heard all the tales about how the 5.56/.223 is a specially designed man killer – it’s not, that it’s the fastest round in existence – it’s not, that it creates larger wound channels than other rounds – it doesn’t, and all the other myths there are. No matter what people believe, however, just like with motorsports: There is no replacement for displacement.

    • ” It doesn’t matter what a gun is unless someone uses to commit murder and, if murder is what you choose to commit, it doesn’t matter much if you do it with an AR or not. I don’t see why this is hard to understand and I also don’t see why the antis seem to think so many people are killed by ARs when rifles, total, are only used in a few hundred murders each year and those rifles used in that manner represent a tiny fraction of the rifles in private hands.”

It is not hard to understand and the leaders of the left, Soros, Bloomberg, etc do understand. They are using the useful fools of the media, and the anti-crowd who have been brainwashed, to reach the goals of a marxist utopia.

Logic doesn’t apply when emotions rule and the whole “common sense gun laws” thing is emotion based. They FEAR guns and the people who own them. The constant drum beat by the media keep the snow flakes and fudds stirred up and we (conservatives) are not allowed to speak.

The left is working up to a serious outbreak of violence. Their hope is that conservatives will retaliate with violence, “gun violence”, so they can coerce legislators into passing more unconstitutional laws.

I am convinced there will be a civil war here. I fervently hope it is not conservatives that start it.

      Be Prepared !

  29. Again! The term “Assault Rifle ” is a misused WW2 German military designation for the 1st experimental rifle of its class, The Sturmgewehr STG 44. Also known as the “Storm Rifle of 1944…Or Assault Rifle” , because it was originally designed as a bridge to incorporate submachine gun, rifle, and squad support weapon with the capability to provide low recoil rounds, semi-auto and full automatic fire, and portability into one package…

  30. FFS, are we still on about this?

A few hours ago Mr.GunsAndGear sent s facebook post out about a sale on Colt LE6920’s – THAT’S AN M4. It’s made by the same company on the same assembly line with the same parts. It has two extra inches of cold-hammer forged chrome lined barrel, and it’s missing a third pin hole for the class 3 trigger parts, but in every other way it’s a mil-spec M4 and we all know it. Takes all the same accessories, loads the same ammo through the same mags, and even sends the bullets out just a bit faster thanks to that 16.5 inch barrel. It’s the same gun with a different engraving on the receiver, and it’s on sale for less than $900.

There, that out of the way, THAT’S ALMOST EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD BE. The only problem is that we can’t buy the full auto version. Colt shouldn’t have to make a special version for us, we should be able to buy the military version right off the rack next to the Cheetos. We are CITIZENS, not slaves or subjects. CITIZENS are trusted with arms, CITIZENS are trusted with the responsibility to use them in not only a safe manner, but in defense of others and their country.

If they want to be slaves, then they can expatriate to a country that bans guns.

The 2A crowd has been losing this fight pretty much from 1933 onwards because we’ve been trying to conserve what’s left rather than take back what was stolen WITH INTEREST. There is no such thing as a winning defensive strategy. You either attack or you die in a war of attrition. The way through this is not to back up, not to play their rhetorical BS games, but to call their bluff, own it, and then go on the attack AND TAKE BACK THE GROUND THEY’VE TAKEN FROM US.

    • A gun is a gun is a gun is a gun – a .22 will kill you just as dead as a .50BMG, only practical difference is from how far away.

The anti’s have given us a tremendous gift this last week, they’ve finally just come out and said that they want the 2A gone and guns confiscated – total disarmament. There is exactly ONE counter to that that has any chance of working because the solution to any problem must be equal to or greater than the problem.

They have stopped arguing that only certain guns are evil or certain people need to be blocked and now they just want them all, so that means ALL GUNS ARE GOOD, WE SHOULD SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUY ANY OF THEM EVER MADE AS LONG AS WE’VE GOT THE CASH.

  31. Anyone who believes a Henry Or Marlin lever gun with 20 + round tube magazine capacity won’t be banned as an “assault weapon” is either a liar or a fool.

    • It’s funny that a definition in a gun control bill pending in the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee specifically excludes lever guns and their magazine capacities from the definition of “assault weapons” and “high capacity magazines”. The bill doesn’t ban anything, just limits the age to purchase/posess to 21 and prohibits the use of “assault weapons” by anyone under 21.

I guess lever guns are AOK as far as the Pennsylvania Legislature is concerned.

  32. Anything used in a violent attack on someone is then an “assault weapon”, no matter what it is. Hence the laws in the UK banning firearms, swords, kitchen knives with sharp points and even a stick if you pick it up to defend yourself.

The left in America wants the end result here to be like the UK where self defense is now the punishable offense of assault.

If a thug breaks into your house and beats you and you pick up a bat and strike them, you will go to jail.

    Socialist (marxist) utopia.

    Be Prepared !

  33. If I assault you with it, it’s an assault rifle. If I defend my home with it, it’s a defensive tool. If I shoot it for fun, it’s a plinking rifle. Used in competition, it is a sporting rifle. See that rock? It’s only a weapon of I use it as one. By the way… if weapons are banned in a school but they provide buckets of rocks to be used as weapons, are all rocks now weapons?

    • Rocks are protected by the second amendment but the founding fathers never envisioned chunks of concrete so they are not.

  34. Any fully-automatic or select-fire small arm that is over 0.500 inches in caliber and is not a muzzle loader or black powder firearm.

  35. The term “assault weapon” is meaningless for firearm classification or regulation. Frankly, I reject the term “assault rifle” as well. I prefer the 2nd ammendment term “arms”.

If I HAD TO define “assault rifle” then I’d define it as any belt-fed fully-automatic weapon that cannot be carried by a single individual. :))

ALL civil rights are dangerous to those who seek to enslave others.

  36. No such thing as an assault rifle, look up the definition of assault. It’s going to be used in a gun grab. I can assault some one, an inanimate object cannot.Id reckon in the near future “their” plan is to ban ammunition used in an assault rifle. Assault paperweights anyone?

  37. A 50 caliber machine gun mounted on my pick up truck just like the “Rat patrol” used in the Africa campaign during in WW2 ….now THAT’s an assault weapon.

  38. A long gun that shoots bullets. That’s my definition. That’s my definition because some day that will also be the leftist definition. They will work it towards that definition.

  39. What’s my definition of an Assault Rifle?

The tool I will use against anyone who tries to forcefully take away my inalienable rights,
such as my right to keep and bear arms and my right to free speech.

  40. AR does not stand for “Assault Rifle”. It stands for Armorlite Rifle. That is the company’s name that first made the Rifle. Eugene Stoner invented this type Rifle while working as an engineer for them.
The people against all guns invented this stupid name to fit their propaganda.

Assault can stand for anything used to hurt someone. A Hammer can be a assault weapon if they hit someone in the head. A car that is used to run down innocent people can be a assault weapon.

Come on people wake up. We need to stop the crazies from using anything to assault people.

    Gu

  41. I’ll go along with King George III , who coined the term in referring to the Rifled barrel .
So any rifle using rifling to increase the accuracy and distance of a projectile is an assault weapon .
Be careful of language , the enemies of our freedom know full well the answer to this question and will use it when they feel it is appropriate .

  42. I don’t use the term because it has no useful definition. If someone uses it talking with me, first I get them to define what they’re talking about.

  43. “Assault” rifle. A generic term only. Loosely used to define a weapon of mass firepower.
The AR-15 which does not have full automatic capability, should not be referred to as a so called assault rifle.
Only people NOT of the gun do so.

  44. This is a dumb semantic argument that’s spinning the wheels. I don’t care if they call it an assault rifle, a baby slayer, or a weapon of war. They can get the fuck off my goddamn lawn.

  45. “Assault Rifle’ or ‘Assault Weapon’ is the modern day equivalent of ‘Saturday Night Special’,
the catch all phrase that lets those that oppose RTKBA list and ban whatever they wish.

  46. Die Stümgewehr ist eine Angriffsrakete, die von deutschen Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg benutzt wurde. Georg

  47. Any firearm, real or imagined, plastic or metal or wood or any combination thereof, that “offends” the (in)sensibilities of “a” or “any group of” liberal(s) … that’s an ‘assault weapon’.

  48. I don’t particularly care for definitions. As far as I am concerned, the “Assault” describes the person. The “Rifle” is just a tool.
