Courtesy WKTV.comWhat’s wrong with this picture? This was captured during the FBI raid on the home of Herkimer, NY shooting suspect Kurt Myers in Mohawk, NY. Anybody want to guess how many rounds this Special Agent with the carbine shoots in quals each year? Or how many of those rounds actually hit the target?

        • Not only does the Eotech appear to be mounted backwards, but it is mounted directly over the ejection port. May not cause any issues, but you never know.

      • And one more thing……at first I thought he was peering down the side of the rifle but looking closer does he have that Eotech up against his eye trying to see through it? I guess that would rule out the cowitnessing with his back up iron site theory…..I’ll check the Eotech website but it could be that the eye relief for a backwards mounted optic is actually 0″!

      • Reminds me of that idiotic band Kriss Kross back in the day.

On a serious note it’s truly disturbing any supposed “expert” would show up with some crap like that. Give ’em a bunch of toys and they’re more anxious to use them than learn them.

    • Looks like an eotech g23 and is 100% positively mounted backwards. You’d gotta have the muzzle resting against your chest to use the buttons

    • That thing is supposed to have a reticle? I’ve always used them as a frame as a 200 MOA sight, we are only going for “combat accuracy” here guys… I say if the guy is anywhere in the window its a good shot! (even as far out as 13 feet, even further if you are using the frame of the EOtech as a ghost ring with the muzzle as the front sight, centered in the window that method will have you zeroed at the muzzle and 1300 yards). It will never work correctly with that pesky front sight. I don’t even know why the put glass in those things, It does nothing to help sighting and often gets dirty. I prefer to cut mine out (They say a you need a gunsmith for this job, but trust me, you can do it with a dremel).

      • Combat accuracy? Don’t you mean LAPD accuracy? No, wait…LAPD accuracy would have them shooting at (and hitting) the wrong target. It’s NYPD accuracy they’re looking for, I think.

If that’s what the pros are using now, I guess I’m gonna have to get me one of those 200 moa ghost ring windows.

  1. The Eotech sight is on backwards. He may have been co-witnessing the BUIS through it, but he would be in for a nasty lesson in eye relief if he fired.

Hopefully, it was a momentary lapse. It suggests a serious training issue, and indicts his commanding officer, too.

  2. Police officer: ” I am trained professional, only I can be trusted with these weapons.”
Random guy: ” Your sight is on backwards.”

      • Or random guy is jumped on by 5 cops thugs, punched and stomped repeatedly, tased, thrown in a patrol car, given no badly needed medical attention in jail, not allowed to make any phone calls, not allowed his meds, not allowed any blankets… you know the story, it’s been played out many times.

  3. I have a more important question: why was the FBI involved in the case at all? The criminal murdered four people. That sounds like something the local police should handle.

    FYI:
The first line of the article says “BFI” instead of FBI. (Sorry to be the proofreading nazi.)

  4. Of course his Eotech is mounted backwards — that’s why he is sighting down the side of the barrel. Special Agent Gomer Pyle never did like that newfangled technology mumbo-jumbo.

  5. The guy with the shotgun is holding it like it is a SAW.

As far as the guy with the AR goes – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the fact that the sights are clear does not mean the muzzle isn’t pointing at the object you are taking cover behind. He may also be about to get a nasty lesson in parallax.

  6. This has to be the subject of a future Far Side cartoon.

It reminds me of the one where the nerdy looking boy is pushing on a door with all of his strength trying to open it. A sign tells us that the door is the entrance to the Midvale school for gifted children. On the door is a big sign that says “Pull”. (You can see it here: http://mlkshk.com/p/54DT)

  7. Is it even possible to insert a magazine backwards into an AR-15?

Dang it … I was replying to Aharon’s post. I don’t know why my replies keep going to the bottom of the list and are not attaching to the parent thread.

    • uncommon_sense,

Just look close at the linked picture with the female police officer. The part of the bottom of the magazine that should be angled up and forward is reversed. She’s the queen of ammo conservation since she can’t fire her bullets and maybe that was her intent? Meanwhile, the mass media will call for her promotion.

    • Jessica Lynch did it. One of the reasons why she was captured, that and they turned off their radio because vital route changes to avoid an ambush was too bothersome to listen to.

  8. We really have to authenticate the photo at the top of this article as well as the photo that Aharon referenced. If both of these are authentic, they are a MONUMENTALLY HUGE argument for why citizens cannot rely on law enforcement to protect them. Of course we also want to point out how we need the same firearms to protect ourselves as law enforcement needs — although we (armed citizens) will make sure to install our sights and magazines correctly.

  9. The sight is not on backwards. This is an example of the “Cuomo” modification which bans optical sights on any black weapon with a killer assault ammo magazine clips unless it is mounted in an unusable position, thus not contravening the 2nd amendment. I’m surprised no one saw that!

  10. It is truly amazing that you ask people if they really are stupid, then you look at those two pictures and realize they take such a remark as a serious challenge and try to be dumber than before!

  11. That guy needs to set the rifle on the ground and carefully back away. Some one is going to get hurt. And people wonder why so many more people die when the police stop a random shooting vs a civilian stopping it.

  12. Don’t be so hard on ’em fellers, don’t ya’ll know that they’re “operators?” They’ve sure got all the cool black gizmos and junk that all “operators” are supposed to have. Shoot, there’s even a guy playing, OOPS!, I mean “WORKING,” that’s got the really cool army head gear and desert tan camo’s! He’s even got the real rad PO-LICE patchs on his gear! When will ya’ll learn that it doesn’t matter how these rambos perform, or even if they don’t have the slightest idea how their equipment should be set up and used, just as long as they show up in the latest tacti-cool gear to impress their friends and stroke their own egos. All hail the Emperor’s new legions!

  13. Is that dude trying to be a sniper with an 870? Those finicky pump shot guns tend to function best with one hand on the slide.

    • Yup. Or at least pinching the action bars so it does not open when fired…..it’s ok though, he saw that firing position in a movie.

  14. The fact the two dumb NY gestapo members have there firearms pointed into there MRAP a unsafe and tactical dumb move.

  15. That chrome dome is also going to punch himself in the face and feel dumb if pulls that trigger he is molesting.

    • Take a look at the full sized picture, the guy with the shotgun doesn’t have his finger on the trigger. It’s well outside the trigger guard.

  16. I thought it was the 30rnd magpull. Hard to get that in backwards.

Had to quick edit when I saw the link to the women cop having done just that.

take note people don’t think straight when stressed

  17. “Or how many rounds actually hit the shooters partner instead of the family dog?”

    Fixed.

Sorry, Im not in to police bashing but this was too easy.

  18. This one might be a bit picky but it does seem to have weight . . . they are taking cover beind/near the fuel tank. Defnitely better than nothing and there may or may not be other options but I would not want to be ther any extended period of time. Yes, I know regular rounds will not ignite the fuel (see mythbusters/sons of guns) but I am not taking the chance that the other guy having or not having tracers/incendiary rounds.

    • While I wouldnt want to stand near it in regular clothes, when a gas tank does rupture its not very dramatic. I always knew it wasnt like Hollywood portrays but during my firefighting days I was rather dissapointed by what it really is. Its still cool but hardly a scenario to worry over.

  19. Also they’re not wearing eye protection. If they had time to put on a vest they had time to put on some eye protection. Also his stock is collapsed all the way in, his vertical grip is to close to the magwell, and he is pointing it right at the truck.

  20. At least with that install, maybe he got the muzzle and stock butt confused. Awkward to shoot, but it would test his vest.

  21. The really scare thing is that nobody else on this goon squad has noticed the problem either…you’d think they’d tell him if they did.

  22. “Authorities say the man who fatally shot four men in neighboring upstate New York villages last week still had 50 rounds on him and another 45 in his vehicle”

Wow. Two boxes of ammo — where did he find them? Can a brother get a hint?

Myers also shot an FBI dog, which must have pissed off the FBI who thought they were the only ones who are entitled to shoot dogs.

  23. If that pic is real and that D-Bag really put his EOTech on backwards, he should be fired and lose all his Gun Rights ASAP!

And none of his buddies said a damn thing?!?!?!

  24. I see the issue with the EO Tech, but i would also call out the officer with the pump acting like he is getting ready to shoot a .50 . What happens if he needed to take a second shot with his hand all the way away from the slide?

  25. That is the funniest damn thing ever! LOL
Talk about a big ‘L’ on the forehead! DOH!
hahahahahaa No wonder why he’s not looking through his sites!
    What a dumb ass! Hahahahaa

  26. It must be a shooting situation…….he has the safety in the fire position.

You have to blow up the pic or maybe the version I looked at is larger but the “tick” is plain to see at 12oclock.

  27. Aharon,

Regarding that photo of a female law enforcement officer holding an AR-15 with the magazine in backwards, I researched everything I could find in the news print in that photo and cannot find any references to any of it. Either the newspaper yanked their story from their website and purged Google, or the entire thing is bogus. At this point I think the entire photo is fake.

  28. Other than cops/wannabe grunts with toys. The rear quarter panel of an M966 HMMWV MIGHT stop a.17 pellet. Fender is aluminum about the thickness of a tool box lid. The cap and hatch are fiberglass will stop medium sized hail.

    Concealment is not cover.

  29. Those are not FBI HRT. I can guaran-damn-tee that. I doubt those dupes are FBI at all.

I really cant mention specifics, but youll know FBI HRT if you ever see them. hopefully you wont. they have extraordinary instructors and training partners.

  30. Umm… has anyone thought about the fact that if this is real maybe we should be questioning what happened that day? Tin foil hat aside… all info would have been given by a police source that went to a media that we then treat as gospel…. would it surprise people if it turns out this was all a faked photo op that was staged? I mean anyone using a gun would notice a site on backward when using it… right?

  31. I’ve looked through an EO backwards & you can barely see the reticle on full power, absolutely useless. IIRC this was a local cop not fed. Also notice bald guy’s got his left hand on the top of the shotgun stock not very good for controlling recoil for a follow up.

    But hey, they look cool

  32. This just in. Just to be able to say “I tried, and it doesn’t work” I put my EOTech on backwards on my rifle. On the highest setting, who’d a’ thunk, it works. You can clearly see the reticle. Mine is a 517.A65. Clearly enough to be able to shoot on an overcast day, but probably (notice I didn’t say certainly) not on a bright, sunny day.

Granted, since my model takes AA batteries, it’s REALLY HARD to not realize it’s mounted backwards. My he buttons are on the side, so I can also see how one, in the heat of the moment, may not realize that the buttons are on the wrong side. So, a compact EOTech with buttons on the side, in the heat of the action… I can see it happening. Unlike a scope, there is no magnification to make you say instantly “WTF!”. Now, I imagine the error would not survive past the first sight adjustment, when rounds would go in the opposite direction (windage wise) than expected.

Just for grins, I will purposefully shoot it backwards and post the target.

  33. Sight is indeed on backwards… cannot attest to why, it will not function this way.

Possible explanation but not an excuse could be that many swat guys keep their optics zero’d and kitted up in their cases as these can be mission specific. Eotechs retain their zero upon mounting so perhaps in the stress and tension of a potentially lethal encounter he grabbed it and put it on backwards. If i had to put a caption on this he could be saying to his buddy “hey, i cant see the reticle in my EOTech!!

    again no excuse..
some train until they get it right…. others train until they cannot get it wrong!!
