We’ve just received word from the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) that Old Dominion has ditched its one-gun-a-month (OGAM) law. Governor McDonnell signed the bill that restores Virginia residents’ Second Amendment right to purchase and keep and bear handguns without the previous, capricious limit on purchase quantity and frequency. The repeal doesn’t kick-in until summer. As the VCDL warns, “until July 1, if you don’t have a CHP or fall under one of the current exceptions, do not buy more than one handgun per month.” Virginia households are bracing for the repeals’ economic impact on the family budget, as are the state’s gun dealers.
Oh to live in that splendid place rather than here in CA. But I would probably not be able to afford it anyways.
You know, you could move to one of the other 57 states. A lot of them are free as well.

The Cali thing puzzles me in this way: I’m east coast, but I have cousins in San Francisco and San Diego. The guys all seem to really enjoy shooting, and own guns. So how did they become so out-numbered? In fact CA is famous for shooting and hunting. Did half of NYC move there?
It may be the Chicago syndrome where the most populous city (cities in California’s case) are disgustingly liberal and as such tend to dictate state policies. NYC transplants certainly wouldn’t help the situation. AZ has more than its fair share of liberal transplants trying to turn our state into a liberal haven.
Very few New Yorkers transplant themselves to Cali these days, in any given industry of note. Cali is for slackers who amble in at 10am and moan when they have to get things done. New Yorkers are on their eight caw-fee by 7am and have generally made someone a few bajillion dollars somewhere by then. It’s about the only thing the place does well.
Chicago syndrome is exactly what ruins otherwise decent states, and some large cities on a microsystem level.
That’s a very broad brush, my friend! Too often, people associate what they see or hear about CA as the norm. Guys, its called Hollywood.
The legislature and current governor are certainly part of the problem, but so are activist judges at the appeals level. We have a referendum process, but many times after a vote, the vote gets overturned by our judicial system.
Indeed, many of our problem come from our elected officials – it is certainly corrupt, but that is what happens with term limits. I have never supported term-limits – it gives the power to lobbyists.
So there you have it, liberal large cities, liberal Hollywood (and associated items like artists, actors, and media), term-limits, activist judiciary, a referendum process (that allows politicians to take the easy way out, rather than having to vote on difficult issues and answer to the electorate).
I always blame Hiram Johnson – but that is just me.

It has been suggested that SCOTUS should have two dockets — one for everything else, and one to overturn the 9th.
I’m glad you brought that up. The 9th is a complete joke. They’re the ones that blocked the key parts of our (AZ) SB 1070 immigration bill. The gov’t sits on its ass, does nothing about the border and when our state says enough is enough those jackasses block it. I realize circuit courts are a part of our system but the 9th makes every argument against them.
My old home of Virginia is now ahead of my new home of Texas. Now if Texas would only allow open carry of hand guns, we’d be good. Next after that would be to get rid of the stupid concealed carry licensing.
I’m surprised Texas doesn’t allow open carry. If Bohnam, Bowie, Crockett and Autry were alive now they might digress.
This is gonna cause VA to lose quite a few points from the Brady state rating scale! Last I checked I was kind of bummed that we had such a high rating with 12 points. This should bring us waaaaay down. I can already here the gnashing of teeth over there at the Washington Post.

Actually, I see it as Virginny (my adopted home state) gaining points. We scored an 88, which is a B+, with the previous Brady rating. Next year, definitely in the A territory of the 90’s. Plus no grade inflation. It would be nice to score a 100, but that’s kind of tough to do right now with the VA Senate essentially being a 50/50 split.
My ex-gf had a similar law. It had nothing to do with guns, but it was one-a-month.
