As far as at an event, Beau and I were both in the ring and I told the crowd I was there to confiscate their guns. And they had a volunteer fire department there and one of the firefighters was packing. He had his pistol on his right hip and he’s rubbing his pistol and looking at me. We took it no further. The thief, dressed like a construction worker, entered DF Brothers Sports Center on New Utrecht Ave. near 79th St. in Bensonhurst — one of the last remaining firearms dealers in the city — at about 10:45 a.m. and told 60-year-old owner Frank Taormina he wanted to “see the guns,” police sources said.
When Taormina asked to see the man’s gun permit, the suspect blasted him in the face with the noxious substance, cops said.
He then pulled out a sledgehammer and shattered a display case.
The thief had just grabbed two pistols when Taormina grabbed his own weapon and fired off two rounds, hitting the crook at least once, police sources said.

Our recent study examined if youth who have been bullied are also more likely to report having access to a loaded gun without adult permission. Participants included students ages 12-18, who responded to the 2011 and 2013 School Crime Supplement (SCS) to the National Crime Victimization Survey. The SCS asks students about their experiences during the current school year related to bullying, school security, exposure and access to weapons and illicit substances, and presence of gangs at school.
Of the 10,704 students included in this study, about 4 percent (446 students) said they could get access to a loaded gun without adult permission. This number is startlingly high, and should be of great concern given the frequency of school shootings in the U.S. It becomes even more concerning when we compare students’ self-reported experience of being bullied.

This doesn’t mean that the guns won’t be registered with the ATF, or that they won’t be considered as machine guns. They will. The open registration period is simply a grace period to keep people who own these guns now from facing prosecution for their possession.

Um… they already have been pretty public about the fact that he was a Bernie Sanders supporter and campaign volunteer and denounced his actions. I don’t recall anyone doing anything to claim he was anything else.
True, but those denunciations only came out after it came out on the Internet that he was Bernie supporter, then got picked up by the media and was reported widely. Usually, the media doesn’t report that connection, which is why usually we don’t hear Dems disavowing all relation to the shooters.
You didn’t hear Bernie or the Dems step up in advance of the reports on the shooter and say anything. You must understand that for political people, everything is political. When something like this happens, the first thing these people do is look to see if they’re connected in any way: through donations, volunteering, or even just letters to the editor or social media posts. That’s what the media looks for, too, although they’ve been known to skip the actual fact checking and just start assuming a shooter is a Tea Party supporter.
In any event, Bernie and Co. likely knew pretty quickly. If they really cared, they wouldn’t make perfunctory denunciations post-event or after the connections surface online. They would dial down the inflammatory rhetoric all along, which their obviously unhinged base cannot handle.

I understand the sentiment, but I won’t give up on trying to reach them on a human level; I refuse to give up on America, and to me that’s what it feels like. Granted, they may have already given up on America because they were never taught that America is the land that is SUPPOSED to detest handouts, but a land that rewards risk, hard work, and dogged determination to excel. But for so long, we have been broken by the powerful who wish only to use us as tax generators, and their rampancy is biting deep into our collective psyche.
Until we can get these OBVIOUSLY malleable minds to side WITH a single united American people against our ACTUAL enemy, which may very well be an impossible task, we will work towards the best but prepare for the worst. I always have faith in selfishness, we need only to utilize their selfishness by offering gainful employment, not Starbucks, but a revitalized steel industry, for example, would pull so much goodness out of even the worst Hillarybots. You are spot on. I thought it would subside but I’m convinced that until they get their way they won’t stop. It’s been a relentless barrage of negative B.S. news daily. It’s gotten to the point where I change channels to HGTV as soon as the weather report is over.
I have friends who stropped having family gatherings because of the divide. This is a microcosm of what some pre-Civil War families must have gone through.

What a bunch of Nancies! In my old Bronx neighborhood, most of the students could get access to a loaded gun without adult permission, and a lot more than 4% did.
I could see 4% being normal in the inner cities, and maybe even suburbs. But that’d be waaay too low in rural areas, where most high schoolers (at least males) have access to guns so they can practice a little pest control.
On a slightly unrelated note, does anyone have any advice or know of any articles for properly teaching a child (6 y.o.) to shoot. If the weather ever cools down a little here this summer I’m hoping to take my daughter out to shoot her .22 she got for Christmas and could use some pointers. We’ve already been going over the 4 rules, but I was never really taught how to shoot, I just had a bb gun and a “good luck, don’t hurt yourself”. I would like to give her a little more training than that.
Were I grew up, you could get a small game hunting license at 12, now it is even younger. It is a surprise that only 4% have access, or said they did at least.
One of the best pieces of advice on targets is to use something like balloons, steel plates, tin cans, etc. rather than paper. That way they can have the fun of seeing/hearing stuff react, and they won’t be disappointed when they don’t get as good of a group as you on paper.
My now-7 year old figured out that if he hit the steel target, the bullet would take out multiple balloons when it disintegrated.
In the country its less likely to be a handgun though than a rifle or shotgun.

For starters, only load ONE CARTRIDGE AT A TIME. This is important for safety for a new and especially a young shooter. They tend to muzzle sweep people after taking their shot and you eliminate any chance of injury after the shot if you only load one cartridge at a time. This also forces them to get a lot more practice and competence working the action of the firearm which is a really beneficial skill.
Now, on to technique … and we will keep it simple for such a young shooter. I would only focus on two skills for your daughter at this point: sighting and trigger technique.
In terms of sighting technique, draw a picture to show how she is supposed to line up the sights and how they will look to her when she has lined them up correctly. Also include how the target should be “floating” or “resting” (in an imaginary sense) on top of the sights.
In terms of trigger technique, teach her to keep her finger OFF the trigger (resting along the side of the firearm) until she is pointing at her known/safe target and ready to shoot. Then teach her to slowly and gently squeeze the trigger (rather than jerking the trigger). When she gets older and has had a lot more practice, you can start talking about breathing technique before squeezing the trigger.
Finally, two suggestions from a psychological perspective. Use LARGE targets without bulls-eye rings. (Metallic reactive targets are fantastic as another poster mentioned.) At this point, all that matters is hitting the target. Accurate shots to a specific location on a target (e.g. a bulls-eye) are not important for new shooters. Second, give her lots of praise and encouragement! Remember, you want to emphasize both fun and safety.
Her gun is single shot only which I’m very happy about. I really like the idea of reactive targets so we will probably use balloons, I think she will enjoy that. And I think drawing a picture of what she will be looking at should help her quite a bit.

I like the WW2 BREN Gun with Australian bayonet in the photo. One of my now late uncles carrried one for three beach landings before he was promoted to Sargent Major. He never fitted the bayonet aside from training at home.
He said he made mistake as a private of hitting 20 out of 20 rounds from the hip and his job the next day was machine gunner.
With respect I think we’re looking at a Japanese type 96 which was a knock off on the Czech ZBs in 8mm Mauser used by the Chinese. Of course the Bren was a knock off of the Czech ZB too so that explains the family resemblance. The type 96 had a lug for the standard Japanese bayonet. I can’t imagine doing bayonet drill with a 20+ pound light machine gun but I guess the Imperial Japanese Army thought it looked bad ass.
It’s kinda silly that vets bringing back guns from Vietnam are good to go but anyone after ’68 is still screwed. Still, I’d like to see more guns on the registry.
