Perez told investigators that Ruiz wanted to make a video of her shooting a bullet into a hardcover encyclopedia he was holding against his chest, according to court records. Perez said she fired a .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol from about a foot away. Two cameras recorded the incident, though investigators have withheld the footage. Ruiz died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The couple had a YouTube channel where they posted videos of pranks and stunts. Hours before the shooting, Perez tweeted: “Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever. HIS idea not MINE.”

No, they are stupid, plain & simple. Lots of kids grow up (me included) playing violent games and watching violent movies and know they are just that… games and movies, not real life.
I just can’t understand why you wouldn’t test it first, even if you think it won’t go though you would be idiotic not to just shoot a book first and see. This is probably one of the stupidest ideas in the history of the human race.
They did shoot a book, propped up on something, and it didn’t go through. Then he held a book in front of himself and it went through. Basic physics is kinda funny like that.
Set it up against something? Like lean it a against a flimsy rock, so that the rock doesn’t hold it as firm and the book moves more when shot? Or was it the same book shot twice? But a nice Darwin Award. How about negligent manslaughter.
Stood it on a table, shot it. Of course the book moved, dissipating the energy slowly.

Well, it sure cannot be murder. At worst I would think manslaughter.

What if the boyfriend told the girlfriend that he extensively researched the concept and that it was absolutely safe, even showing her videos of other people shooting handguns into thick books that ALWAYS stopped the bullet. Can she really be guilty of a crime if she expressed reservations and her boyfriend assured her that it was perfectly safe?
People perform stunts all the time. If someone has seriously researched the stunt, applied safeguards, and truly believed that the stunt was safe with those safeguards, how can they be guilty of a crime if something goes wrong? We hear about people getting seriously injured or killed performing stunts for television or movies — and rarely hear about any prosecutions unless there was gross negligence.
Rather, this sounds like it could be a tragic accident.
Ignorance isn’t an excuse in law. It would be the same if someone (somehow) tricked you into selling their drugs for them, and you got busted for it. The moral of the story is, don’t point a gun at something unless you want to kill it.
Unless you are a cop. Then you can be as ignorant of the law as you want as long as you act in “good faith”.
I was wondering that too. If your dumb to do something like this in your back yard, i would imagine there wasnt really any research put into this. The guy probably just saw a couple youtube videos or just assumed it would work because guns dont shoot through anything in videogames.
However, despite this being an incredibly dumb and tragic accident, i dont really see why shes being charged with his death. I guess it probably has to do with not having licensing or training to do stunt work.
This is one of those stories that super stupid and super sad, simultaneously. Ignorance kills.

My biggest book is the Random House Dictionary of the English Language. The thing is big, but I wouldn’t do that stunt even with a .22 let alone a damn .50 caliber!

She clearly met that rule. She maybe failed “Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.” though.
I have shot 1,000 page books from 10 yards with a Ruger Mk III Hunter with the 6 7/8’s inch barrel and had Remington Thunderbolt 22 LRs go thru all 1,000 pages. Enough said.

It would otherwise be funny that their testing protocol, in its entirety, was apparently that the boyfriend shot a book beforehand and it didn’t go through. And after that one sample they were willing to take a different book and bet his life on the same exact result happening.

I’m with everyone else on this one that said why the hell didn’t he test it first I mean how much is an encyclopedia you damn near can find them in the garbage since the internet. I used to shoot Orlando Florida Yellow Pages that were four times as thick as an encyclopedia and I could stop 9mm 40 caliber and 45 ACP. But I sure as hell didn’t have anyone hold it up over their chest and then shoot it. These two mental midgets got exactly what they deserved. Hopefully the children will be raised by more intellectual types.

Why the hell did he shoot one first up against a mannequin or a tree or something to see if that 50 would go through this guy was a complete moron. And the girlfriend complete moron to.
