"A sniper is seen securing the surrounding area of the Navy Yard. Astrid Riecken / For The Washington Post"

“Six people were killed and several more were wounded Monday at the Washington Navy Yard when gunmen armed with assault rifles barged inside and opened fire,” nydailynews.com. “Police shot one of the intruders, who later died of his wounds, and were looking for “potentially two other shooters,” said Washington D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier. ‘We have no reason to believe either was military,’ said Lanier, but both appear to be wearing uniforms of some kind . . . One is a white man armed with a handgun, last seen around 8:30 a.m. wearing a khaki Navy style uniform, the chief said. The other is a black man in his 50’s dressed in olive drab and carrying a ‘long gun’ of some kind.” wistv.com reports that President Obama has responded to the attack . . .

President Barack Obama is mourning what he called “yet another mass shooting” in the United States that he says took the life of American patriots.

Obama promised to make sure, quote, “whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.”

It was unclear whether the President included the “workplace violence” at Fort Hood and no mention of that whole Benghazi thing. Meanwhile, multiple shooters at a U.S. military installation with at least one gunman reportedly wearing a uniform? I don’t know about you but I think it’s a bit early to call this a “mass shooting” rather than a terrorist attack. Just sayin’ . . .

  1. “…gunmen armed with assault rifles barged inside …”

How do you “barge inside” within a limited-access military facility that is supposedly secure, and prohibits any personal weapons from being brought into the base? Are they saying that a gummint-secured Gun Free Zone is a farce? I am shocked, shocked …

  2. So the headline says “gunmen armed with assault rifles” and then the text of the article goes on to say one guy with a handgun and one a ‘long gun of some kind’?!?!?! Wow. That’s just peachy.

    • EVIL ASSUALT RIFLES! EVIL ASSUALT RIFLES! EVIL ASSUALT RIFLES! Are you ready to get behind an AWB? Or should I shout EVIL ASSUALT RIFLES one more time?

Basically their strategy in a nutshell.

      • The Violence Policy Center has admitted their strategy re “assault rifles”.

From the Violence Policy Center website:

“The weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun— can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons. In addition, few people can envision a practical use for these weapons.”

        • That is gun-grabbers in general.

They fail to realize that people do not a right to not be frightened, e.g. by an evil looking rifle.

Nor does anyone’s belief in lack of need for something negate anyone else’s right to own said something.

  3. “Obama promised to make sure, quote, “whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.””

well, that is, until he and his administration can find a way to hold the rest of us responsible for their actions.

  4. President Obama has responded to the attack – “as of today (after I get a round in at Andrews), I am banning all law abiding civilian ownership of all guns because that has nothing to do with what happened at the Navy Yard. Uh, er, what I meant to say….”

    • “I’m tired of these tragedies, uh, how many more people, uhhh, have to die, before Congress, uhh, acts in the interest of the American people. Uhhhh, I said after Newtown, uhh, that we can’t afford, to have these tragedies. Uhhh, but because Congress, uhhh, specifically Republicans, refuse to act, uhh, and because these Republicans continue to listen to a terroris… errr, uhh, gun lobby organization, uhh such as the NRA, instead of the American people, uhh, we will continue to have these tragedies. Uhhh, How many more? uhhh, I have asked Vice President Biden, uhh, to further asses what steps we can take, uhh and see how much more power I can abuse. In the meantime, I ask Congress, uhhh, to vote to ban these weapons”

  5. I expect it will be at least 24 hours until the mud settles and some truth emerges from the chaos of instantaneous reporting of what may or may not be fact in this incident.

      • Hear, hear.

Although I think it should apply to any news or journalism orginization. The lack of ethics in journalism is distubing; everyone attmepting to break the news first, but all they have are rumors and half-truths. CBS already identified the shooter; only to retract it later when they found out they were wrong. If I was that retired Chief I would be suing some people.

    • I heard a female reporter on Fox “explain” to the Public how the shooter was armed with an AR-15, “the civilian version of the M-16″ She went on to say that that this explained how some witnesses had reported that three shots were fired, because “this weapon fires in three shot bursts”.

Please, members of the 4th Estate, if you don’t know what you are talking about don’t comment.

I also hear that a “suspect” was seen armed, while wearing a Navy uniform — including a beret. Is there a beret authorized for wear with any Navy uniform?

    • Don’t ignore the inconsistencies as the storyline develops and morphs, and the message is refined. There’s often really important stuff there.

  6. I want it to be a military person with a rifle that’s actually capable of three round bursts, like was originally (and almost certainly erroneously) reported. That way it has nothing whatsoever to do with me. I mean, less than it already does, which is somewhere between zero and nothing.

  7. Go ahead. Propose some gun control measures and pray the American public doesn’t ask why a military facility wasn’t better secured.

That will be a fun sell.

  8. Obama promised to make sure, quote, “whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible.”

I am overjoyed to hear that Obummer is going to finally hold the cowards responsible that ban firearms. Wait, that’s not what he meant?

Gun grabbers are afraid of anyone with a gun whether the armed person is a criminal or a citizen. Thus they ban everyone from having guns. Of course that doesn’t work because criminals do not honor bans. And what happened today is the natural result when citizens are forcibly disarmed.

    • There may come a time, sooner rather than later, when law-abiding citizens in places like NY state and CA cross the line into ignoring bans as well.

  9. ” said Washington D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier…” who has absolutely NO jurisdiction in a crime committed on a military reservation. This is an NCIS show.

The circus has officially arrived in town.

    • Only if the shooters were yelling “Allah Akbar!” and had recent email communications with Al Qaeda.

Otherwise, it was certainly the work of internal extremists and NRA members. In which case it would be terrorists.

      Freaking government…

  10. Cnn is being over dramatic with the bold the all caps title “multiple bodies in navy yard”. There is too much speculation and not enough hard evidence at this time.

  11. . . .and we are part of the problem. MSNFoxBCNN has a breaking story, talks to people (excited, stressed, poorly-observing ones) who really don’t know what happened but have a single point of view that MIGHT have some truth, but certainly only part of it, and breathlessly puts out whatever they have in a snapshot of time just to have something out, all while using buzzwords such as gunman, multiple, assault rifle, frantic, and spray. In the meantime, every other official-type talking head in the area gets a severe case of ‘microphone syndrome,’ wherein if one gets a mic stuck in front of their face, one has the unbearable urge to SAY something, relevant or no.

As soon as the first bit of so-called news information comes out, everyone else in the country starts to suffer ‘Interweb Syndrome’ and has to post their totally-uninformed opinion or desire or WAG about who did what and why, meanwhile hoping that the shooter/s are white/black/arab, left/right/home-grown/foreign, workplace/terrorists/militant/military/civilian/LGBT/Martians who work in the place, or sneaked guns into a gun-free zone, and whether or not this will affect the 2A, and how Obama feels about it and why that’s just awful/special/important/unimportant/threatening.

    Doesn’t that BOTHER you?

    • Deeply John, deeply and profoundly. However, this is the country we live in and the people we share it with. I propose ongoing education at least throughout K-12 in skepticism, logic and rhetoric. Of course it would result in the death of statism, collectivism and religion of all sorts eventually, but it would provide a well informed and not easily lead populace.

      • Yeah… the death of statism is a non-starter in our “educational” system. A parallel, non-state school system is needed, because not enough parents are ever going to be able to go the home-school route. If it’s good, if it gets good results, you’ll see mass defections from the public school system.

  12. I heard that during the Newtown shooting, that the gov’t had ‘crisis actors’ there to wave additional bloody shirts…I wonder if it takes the same amount of time to get the real facts out as it does to coach and prepare crisis actors for their roles?

    • “Ok, everyone ready – hey, you in the back row, pay attention please – ok, repeat after me: it was HORRIBLE! I was so afraid because he had a GUN!”

Remember, emphasis on “horrible” and “gun”. Everyone got that? Good.

    • At the Boston bombing, as well. There were real injuries and deaths, but there were embellishments through make-up jobs. I could show this to anyone in person, because there are photos that show this.
But I don’t have a forum to do this here, and it’s not the place anyway.

        • To be clear… No, I do not belive there were any actors at Newtown, Boston, or the Navy Yard. I do believe the U.S. landed on the moon.

As far as sharing photos… You could start your own website/blog or a Flickr account. Or are you really Snowden divulging more secrets from Siberia?

        • And this is the truth about all these conspiracy theories. Try to pin one of their mouthpieces down with a show of proof and they waffle. Just the word of an anonymous dude on the internet that knows all the inside dope but he never produces any of it.

      • JWM,
Exactly. Convince me William Burke… Show me the proof! You will be the biggest name since Snowden on blowing the lid off of the government. You could help topple the Obama Administration. Until then this is just as bad as gun grabbers waving the bloody shirt, but there is no proof the shirt you’re waving even exists.

  13. The gun-grabbers have successfully 1-uped themselves, instead of even waiting to hear how many have died to crawl over the bodies to shout, “GUN CONTROL!”, they aren’t even waiting for the victims to stop bleeding. A-F_ckin’-Mazing.

  14. Well, thinking this is another chance, they’re gonna keep flogging this. They manage to make a several-month, ill-reported crisis out of the few incidents that fit the “mass shooting” / “guns evil” story. These incidents stand out particularly to people who are isolated from the base level of other violence.

I do wonder whether it’s not time to go half-Olby on this one. (I would never suggest that someone go full-Olby. There’s no coming back from that.) Start promoting daily and running counts of incidents, victims & successful self defense ending with “This is day *whatever* that gun ownership is up, gun violence is down, and yet another round of laws directed at the good guys haven’t stopped the bad guys, but guns in the good guys hands have.”

Short of that, this is an opportunity to plug the emotional spin. “You know, there were N people in that building. How frustrating is must have been for the combat veterans among them to only be able to ‘shelter in place’ while their colleagues were shot.”

“The bad guy took out the uniformed guards, openly carrying. Interesting. I wonder – like I wonder about Fort Hood – what a couple combat vets carrying concealed would have done to the outcome. I wonder how it would have changed these bad guy’s calculus had they not known exactly who to shoot first, the only ones who could fight back.”

“Huh. Shame the ‘responders’ were so far away, especially given that veterans and service personnel are themselves often ‘responders.'”

While I’m holding forth, “Common Sense Gun Control” ought to be smacked down every time:

    Short form:
“I’d be happy to back common sense violence reduction, if they or you would propose any. The defeated bills were defeated because they suck at reducing violence, and everybody who read them knows it. (The amendment ‘deal’ was actually worse than the original language, BTW.)”

    Long form:
“First, the goal is to reduce violence, not control guns. Gun control may be a means. If gun control is the goal that’s a different conversation. To start, y’all need to stop lying about what your goal actually is. It’s just confusing to the rest of us.

Second, you have the leading sponsor of the recent Senate bill *on video* saying that she really wants to take all citizens’ guns away. Seems reasonable to believe she means what she says. So, you ought to emphasize how the proposed bills can’t be used for that.

You’re really working against the “common sense” not to trust a word you say about the real goal of gun legislation, when MAIG, the Brady Campaign, and *the other one*, who lobbied the sponsors and helped write the legislation, all proclaim publicly their goal of civilian disarmament.

The “common sense” thing to do is address the concerns your own legislation, its sponsors and the way it was undertaken have created.

We haven’t improved out gun laws, and I blame you, for the dishonesty, overreach and polarization kept ‘common sense’ out of the discussion.”

  15. I just learned a few things through someone connected to the military community in DC. This is not some disgruntled employee or workplace violence incident.

  16. How Come Gubmnt Facilitys are such a target rich environment?
Latest reports point to a well scouted/planned Mil. Spec. attack in the heart of Obamaland. Was it a message being sent?

  17. Where did DC find that moronic broad for chief (or general) of police. What a dimwit. And 4 STARS (3″ across). each shoulder.

    • I’ve been reading comments on the article Dirk posted. HOLY CRAP there are a bunch of dumb, hateful, angry people on both sides of the gun debate out there. Seriously, our country is FUBAR if this is all we have.

      • An Australian friend once asked me, “Why are politics in America so venomous and hateful? They’re rather civil here.”

I could have been cheeky and said, “They’re civil there because you all already gave up all your freedoms and have nothing to fight for,” but I opted instead to be honest in another way and said, “Because here, it’s not just about which guy to put in the White House. It’s a fight for survival. We have a party consisting entirely of traitors trying to warp the foundations of our national values and freedoms. They are venomous, and true Americans, refusing to submit, fight back.”

America does not have “venomous politics.” It has traitors and Americans.

  18. Obama promised to make sure, quote, “no matter who carried out this cowardly act, we will hold law-abiding gun owners responsible.”

    Fixed.
