“A north-east man has been convicted of owning two homemade guns at his farm in Aberdeenshire,” Scotland’s pressandjournal.co.uk reports. Fifty-four-year-old farmer Raymond Panton [above] faces a five-year mandatory minimum jail sentence for the homemade shotguns. “Over the course of the trial, the court heard evidence that Panton and [farm co-owmner] Mr Robertson had acquired the illegal weapons after two masked robbers armed with swords raided their home in April this year. It was said the robbers stole a hoard of cannabis plants and threatened the pair with violence.” And so the landowners tooled-up . .
The court heard that after the incident, Panton armed himself with baseball bats and other weapons for protection but he denied having any prior knowledge of the firearms.
During a police interview, he claimed he had discovered two metal tubes hidden in Mr Robertson’s bedroom at the farm.
He said that once he looked at them he realised – if he slotted them inside each other using a pumping motion – shotgun cartridges could be fired.
Panton called the police and asked them to attend at Parkhill Stores, Greens, New Deer, where they lived at the time.
The pair were then arrested in connection with owning the illegal guns.
Wait. What? Panton called The Old Bill on the illegal shotguns and they arrested him? I guess we can log this under “no good deed goes unpunished.” That said, “Panton was also convicted of acting in a threatening and abusive manner when officers attended to search his property.” In other words, he took the hump when the cops arrested him for his mate’s homemade guns. Who’d a thunk it?

UK people think that life here is cheap, but to us, freedom in the UK is expensive. It’s only available for the rich and powerful.

Seriously what is the hang-up so many of you guys have with it being only “the rich and powerful” who have access to guns in the UK???
The largest demographic of shooters in the UK, by an overwhelmingly large margin, is rural working class.
The next largest single demographic block of shooters is upper-middle class; but that’s about 1/10 the size of the rural working class group.
Our laws may not be great, and we certainly don’t enjoy the constitutional protection of 2a that enshrines ownership of weapons as a right – but actually anyone without a (felony equivalent) criminal record can apply for a license for the types of weapon that are still permitted here, and on the whole applications are successful.
Just sayin’…

Back in New Zealand, my (former) stepfather tells a story about the time he caught several teenagers burglarizing his rural farm house. He held them at gunpoint inside the house, and called the police. When the cops arrived, he was promptly arrested. Apparently New Zealand authorities don’t approve of armed self defense. Which makes sense considering New Zealand was a British colony for a long time, and has adopted many of the same nanny-state policies.
They would have got swords for self-defense, but most of those are illegal on knifemurder island too.
I invite a fellow Scot persecuted by the laws of the English Sassanach to emigrate to the USA, where his self sufficient spirit is still respected over most of the land.
