Boosting attendance of foreign buyers at U.S. trade shows helps grow U.S. exports
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Commercial Service of the Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration (ITA) has announced the selection of 26 trade events for the 2014 International Buyer Program (IBP). Through U.S. Commercial Service offices in U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide, the IBP recruits thousands of qualified foreign buyers, sales representatives, and business partners to U.S. trade shows each year, giving U.S. companies excellent opportunities to expand their global sales.
“The IBP offers U.S. exhibitors the convenience of face-to-face meetings with prospective foreign buyers at a single venue, saving businesses valuable time and resources in their pursuit of global business opportunities,” said Antwaun D. Griffin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Domestic Operations with the U.S. Commercial Service. “Increasingly, exports are the engine of our economy, and this is one more example of how the International Trade Administration is working to support the President’s National Export Initiative by giving businesses the necessary tools to help them compete internationally.”
The selected shows cover manufacturing and service sectors such as franchising, information technologies, energy, agribusiness, packaging, consumer goods, media, medical, and many more. On average, the IBP facilitates nearly $1 billion in new U.S. export sales each year. Last year, the IBP recruited nearly 11,000 representatives from companies around the globe.

At the shows, the U.S. Commercial Service manages an International Trade Center where foreign buyers can meet and negotiate with sellers, obtain assistance identifying potential business partners, and begin “walking the show floor.” Many U.S. exhibitors take advantage of interpreter services and face-to-face export counseling from overseas U.S. Commercial Service representatives, who usually accompany the visiting delegations from countries worldwide. Foreign buyers and U.S. exhibitors can also take advantage of an online business matchmaking software program to connect and schedule meetings prior to the show.
Five of the 26 trade shows were also selected to participate in both the 2014 and 2015 IBP Programs: 2015 International CES, World of Concrete, The National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show, PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2015, and POWER-GEN International.

And yet a lot of the items there related to the gun industry can’t be exported due to ITAR. Huh.
While ITAR regulates exports for numerous items, a company or person can apply for an exemption. Many times the exemptions are granted if within the guidelines.

Solid Man, Solid!
You might laugh but a civil engineer told me about some really interesting stuff on the horizon with concrete. He claimed that there are concrete products that are stronger than steel without the brittleness that plagues traditional concrete. That concrete is so strong that steel rerod/rebar is useless and ceramic rods (also not brittle somehow) are the new order of the day.
I would like to actually see some of those products and verify that my friend was not confused.
Sounds really cool, but it won’t matter since it will be mixed and poured into pre-formed sections in China with poor quality control, then shipped to the US to be assembled like building blocks by low-wage workers. See the new SF Bay Bridge – it’s the new building trend. Just because America’s infrastructure is crumbling and needs to be rebuilt, doesn’t mean that we still can’t find ways to make it in China!
Well… we already know ships – HONKIN’ BIG SEAGOING VESSELS – can be made entirely from a concrete hull. So this is fascinating, if not surprising.
My mother did a postdoc studying high temperature resistant concrete, such as those used in large scale crucibles.
Concrete is actually pretty fascinating stuff when you start looking into it.
As an industry nerd, I’m very surprised IMTS is not on that list. In 2012 it took up almost all of McCormick place.
I avoid McCormick/Chicago at all costs.
Looks to me like the Dept of Commerce (like much of the Fed Gov’t) just likes to go to SinCity – 8 of the show they endorse are in Vegas. What could be better than gamblin and whorin on the taxpayers dime. Likely will need to take some Secret Service along for security.
So, the US government is committed to taking away my right to keep & bear arms, and then recruiting (qualified? *snort*) foreign entities to come buy the guns they’re trying to take away from me? Oh. Yeah. Of course. Makes sense.
At least they have to buy them in this case, rather than gettin them for free from the CIA.
It all makes sense now! They’re going to take ’em from us, then send them over to Mexican drug cartel members as well as Syrian rebels allied with the Al-Qaeda.
