Tulsa Democrat Senator Advances Bill For Tax-Free Gun Safety

It’s not every day that I get to write about a Democrat doing something positive and useful, but in the interest of fairness, I’ll give credit where it is due. Tulsa State Senator and minority whip Jo Anna Dossett is advancing a bill to eliminate sales tax on purchases of firearm safety devices such as gun safes, cases, lock boxes, trigger locks, and barrel locks from federally licensed Oklahoma dealers. I’m not aware if the deal will extend to non-FFLs, but the sentiment is a welcome transition to education and incentive vs mandate and infringement.

Dossett hopes that Senate Bill 50 will satisfy gun safety proponents while encouraging those Americans who exercise their Second Amendment right to practice safe storage.

“I think we’re in a really sweet spot of trying something that a few states have already and have seen some success with already,” said Dossett.

The idea is one that more states are catching on to, including a recent article I wrote on a similar piece of legislation in Wisconsin.

“I just think it kind of checks all those boxes on both sides if you will of this argument… It’s very, very difficult to argue with tax relief. And I think, responsible gun owners who do make the decision to keep their guns safe and secure, and out of unauthorized users’ hands? Yeah, I think they deserve some tax relief for that,” says Dossett.

The firearm industry has long been a proponent of all things safety-related when it comes to guns, with those who act irresponsibly or with disregard for safety measures truly being the outliers that the mainstream media deceptively pushes to the front as representatives of the community. Mark Heffron, manager of Tulsa gun store Advanced Combat, supports the bill’s intent.

“We’re all in favor of any kind of safety device that can better our – or anyone’s use of a gun… I think any difference would help. It’s going to be in small increments because people flocking to buy a gun safety device or a gun locking device is gonna be pretty minimal, but I think it’s going to be a good start.” Heffron said.

Safe storage will not only protect children from coming into contact with a firearm they are not trained to use, but it will also prevent firearm thefts, which have been an issue in Tulsa County.

“I’m staying completely focused on the fiscal aspect of this bill that it is a very small and targeted reduction to state revenue that could end up paying big dividends in terms of keeping guns in the hands of those who own them, and not in unauthorized users’ hands,” Dossett said.

This is not the first time the senator has tried to pass the measure, as the bill failed to get a floor vote in last year’s legislative session. This time, it passed the Committee on Revenue and Taxation and Dossett says she plans to rally co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle to reach the governor’s desk.

She’s not doing it to be nice. This is one of those ‘mission creep’ foundations tricks democrat gun-controllers do.
They throw in something that will appeal to people, in reality its essentially a do nothing thing. It tries to shift ‘perception’ towards the ‘middle ground’ where it can be exploited further to introduce other ‘palatable’ measures for ‘safety’, using the claim ‘people want safety’. Before you know it you have been ‘safetied’ into Biden’esq thugs putting your family at gun point threatening to kill them (i.e. latest Manley case,
but there are hundreds of others) ’cause we said cause safety’

    • But it’s in Oklahoma where Republicans have a congressional supermajority. I wouldn’t worry about it being a bad thing. Maybe she really believes this will improve safety. Maybe she just wants to keep her seat in congress. They can’t pass anything that R’s don’t want to pass. This gives her something to bring back to her constituents instead of the typical #resist.

This is the type of thing democrats do for gun-control when they want bi-partisan support. Then later, in the future, they exploit it for ‘more’. Just because republicans have a supermajority doesn’t mean some of them will not be replaced with democrats in the future or independents that are closet ‘democrats’. We’ve seen this time and time again in ‘supermajority’ legislatures. This is one of those ‘mission creep’ foundations tricks democrat gun-controllers do.

Its not based on facts to begin with. Sure, they says ‘this is how many, gun safes would have prevented this’ – that don’t know if it would have prevented or not.

Its like the suicide lie the anti-gunner tell with ‘a person is at more risk of suicide with access to a gun because having access to a gun increases risk of suicide’ – its a lie because a person at risk of suicide is always at risk of suicide no matter where they or or if they have access to as gun or not. Plus its not born out by actual suicide stats either – for example – over 12 million adults are at risk of suicide annually, ~9 million of those have access to firearms by some means yet none of those suddenly get a gun and commit suicide. Plus in actual success suicide stats its not born out either, for example, with drug overdose still the number one choice for suicide where over 100,000 people annually use drug overdose and over 80% of those had easy access to a firearm yet selected drug overdose. These trends continue for other forms of suicides method where the suicide person had access to firearms, they tend to overwhelmingly choose a method other than firearm. And for those suicides where a firearm is used, comparatively to all suicides methods its on the very bottom of the list as the ‘least likely method choice’ even if there is access to a firearm. Plus, around 60% of deaths ruled ‘suicide’ with a firearm are later determined to have been either murder-staged-to-look-like-suicide or accidental, yet the numbers for those suicides are never removed from the ‘firearm suicide numbers’ making the numbers falsely inflated.

The democrat politician anti-gunners say access to firearms increases risk of suicide – its a lie.

I’m all for safety with firearms, don’t get me wrong here – safes and safety devices/methods are a good idea and worth while addition. I just know from in-depth research and the last four years and the on-going crap from democrat politicians that a democrat pushing something like this has an anti-gun hidden agenda behind it. Remember, democrat politicians are members of the Democrat Party and one of the Democrat Party main focus agendas is anti-gun and complete removal of the 2A and control over all constitutional rights in a marx- ist social- ist agenda where they just spent four years with Biden plundering the treasury to secretly fund anti-gun organizations, via a massive money laundering through NGO’s and the anti-gun orgs used our own tax dollars against us in law-fare to remove 2A rights when ever possible from law abiding people.

          should have been…

  2. “…in terms of keeping guns in the hands of those who own them, and not in unauthorized users’ hands,’ Dossett said.”

Notice how she turned this around. The anti-gun version message has always been “in terms of keeping guns out of the hands of unauthorized users” (then they go on to cite mostly false stats about children and others) when they want to push draconian mandatory storage requirements.

But with her thing its turned around with “keeping guns in the hands of those who own them,…” … she’s trying to fool people, she’s setting the stage for further gun control.

“I just think it kind of checks all those boxes on both sides if you will of this argument… It’s very, very difficult to argue with tax relief.”

There’s the hook to get Republicans to vote for it. “WHAT! You republicans are not for tax relief for gun owners?”

What tax relief? A few dollars not paid in sales tax for what is mostly a one time purchase is not ‘tax relief’.

  3. From what is a Constitutional Right the party of Jim Crow Gun Control concocted the Gun Violence label and now it’s a nasty nice Gun safety hazard label, etc. Pretty much Guns are not worth spit to them when in their mind’s eye all guns can do is take life and not perserve life. The Rat Party prefers you and yours be unarmed defenseless sheep, that’s the Safety the party that owns the Legacy of Slavery really wants.

    • She’s mostly a typical Democrat, if not a radical: Reducing or eliminating cash bail for thieves, more spending means better education, Improve “women’s healthcare” which probably means pro-abortion, more spending means healthier people.

Money solves all problems for Democrats in their utopia that’s always just a few more trillions away. Then what do they do when they get access to money? They enrich themselves and their cronies first, as our education and health continues to decline even though we spend the most.

  4. Makes one wonder if Mark Heffron is related to “Babe” Heffron of “Band of Brothers” fame?

My gun is safe, with no need for any storage shennagins. I have a .22LR Baretta Neos space gun, and no ammunition.

If it twernt fer having fixed income, I’d have no income at all.

  5. I have this really cool gun safety device. It prevents unauthorized access but allows immediate access for me. It’s called a holster. Do I get to buy more of them tax free?

  7. I’m alright with it.

I do however note the use of the term “tax relief” and chuckle.

Relief is generally defined as the removal ore reduction of something *checks Websters to be precise* “oppressive, painful, or distressing”.

Dems admitting that taxes are oppressive and/or painful? HFS, can we ram this down their throats, please?!

Why is government intentionally oppressing/inflicting pain on its people? Demand an explanation in those terms. Stop letting them drag you onto ground of their choosing and return the favor.

  8. Never trust a democrat. In my state the democrat governor and his party raised the state income taxes by about 70 percent costing us thousands of dollars a year but during Covid suspended the sales tax (signs on door explaining he did it) on “food groceries” saving us like 18 cents a week on groceries and yet many thought he has a real hero for doing that.

If they were truly serious about gun safety how about free vouchers for gun safety and training classes?? Oh that costs too much yet billions for foreign aid to advance transgender crud is OK.

  9. While it may just be my suspicious nature about anything that seems to be a positive coming from a Democrat, I have to wonder if this is just a way to get a listing of more gun owners? I assume that there will be some record-keeping required to reconcile a store’s sales versus the sales tax collected – maybe like the name and address of the purchaser of a gun safe? I really hope that I’m wrong – like I said just my suspicious nature.

  10. Its politics. She can claim that she is doing something for “Gun Safety” for her gun grabber base, but score some points with gun owners. Its OK as long as she doesn’t use it to throw some shady rider on it for, which is also politics.
