“In Arizona, under ARS 13-408, a person can use reasonable physical force to prevent theft or criminal damage of property that’s currently under their control and possession,” tobinlawoffice.com reports. And so we turn to azcentral.com . . .

[Tucson Mayor Jonathan] Rothschild was walking toward the Prius at about 11 a.m. when a man approached him, pointing a gun at him, Dugan said. The car was parked near Tucson Boulevard and Fifth Street. The suspect is described as a man in his 30s or 40s and approximately six feet tall, according to Tucson police.

The man demanded the keys to the car and fled after Rothschild handed them over.

Now you could say that no lethal force was necessary in this situation; Mayor Rothschild emerged from this violent crime (a gun was pointed at him) unscathed. And it’s certainly true that a human life is worth more than Toyota Prius, no matter whether it was leased or purchased. That said . . .

Anyone carjacking while armed is a lethal threat. So if Mayor Rothschild had been armed — home carry people — he would have been well within his rights to end the imminent, credible threat by force of arms. And it should be said that the carjacker remains at large, ready, willing and able to continue preying on innocent citizens, assuming you agree that a politician is an innocent citizen.

This is the same Mayor Rothschild who’s fighting the state tooth and nail to continue Tucson’s practice of destroying confiscated firearms. I doubt the event will change his position.

  1. Arizona also has a castle doctrine law that applies to automobiles.

Perhaps this cold dose of reality may shape the unfortunate mayor’s views for the better.

    • Intriguing inquisition, after all it’s only natural for rodents to commit acts of self elimination when population levels become overly abundant. Lemmings are a dime a dozen, perhaps their political representatives are too. Seems that somebody is alway more than willing to take Up the mantle.

Natural selection in social Darwinism at play, perhaps?

      • A bit off topic, but I can’t resist.

Lemmings don’t commit mass suicide. It was a commonly believed myth back when Disney did nature documentaries. Disney set up and waited for the lemmings to commit mass suicide. The lemmings didn’t, but Disney really needed the shot for they’re documentary. Guess what happened.

If you guessed that the filmmakers drove the lemmings off a cliff to get the shot, you win some nifty internet points (no cash (or other) value).

    • ^This!

There is never a need to defend yourself.

      1) If you have a weapon of any kind whatsoever, it will be used against you.
      2) Just do what they ask and they will not hurt you – this includes you being inseminated with HIV
      3) No property is worth your life – even a life savings or several life savings.
      4) If they do happen to kill you, it is because you love them and accept that you would never harm another and you have shown them that you are better than them and a pinnacle of modern moral ideals.

  2. What kind of dangerous mental defective would ever risk any of the possible consequences for car-jacking a Prius–new, used, or otherwise? DMD

    • Within a day or two, the Prius will be “chopped up” into parts and sold to Progressives all over the country for top dollar. That is why they stole an ecky Prius.

  3. So you’re saying that when (if) the perp is caught this mayor will likely have him destroyed and the gun will be released early for good behavior? Or something like that?

  4. ‘The suspect is described as a man in his 30s or 40s and approximately six feet tall, according to Tucson police.’

    Well that narrows it down.

They might as well just say non-white male since everyone knows that if it was a white male they’d disclose that in the perp’s description.

  5. Human life might be more valuable than a car. Life of carjacking piece of excrement who points a gun at me demanding keys? Not worth as much as broken kick scooter.

  6. A carjacked Prius… that should be an easy one to solve.

Just look for the trail of granola, tears, semen crusted Bernie Sanders pictures and anti-Trump signs leading to the car and backtrack to the guy’s pad.

  7. “Rothschild was walking toward the Prius at about 11 a.m. when a man approached him, pointing a gun at him, Dugan said”

Home carry wouldn’t have mattered. One shooter in a hundred thousand maybe could draw, point, and squeeze before the criminal could just squeeze.

    Situational awareness is another story.

  8. “And it’s certainly true that a human life is worth more than Toyota Prius, no matter whether it was leased or purchased”

A worm’s life is worth more than a Toyota Prius……

  9. So if the thief then used the car he stole to run someone over, I guess we should charge the Mayor for not preventing the theft. Oh wait, safe storage laws only apply if guns are involved. /s
