TTAG’s SHOT Show Coverage Begins Monday!

This weekend, the TTAG team will be winging our way to Las Vegas to cover the 2017 SHOT Show. Since we first attended seven years ago, the atmosphere at SHOT has changed. Just four years ago the entire show came to a standstill to watch President Obama announce his post Sandy Hook executive orders (photo above).

This year, President-Elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated on the show’s final day. Despite the electoral triumph of the NRA-backed real estate developer and reality TV star, the show’s climate will be mixed. Exhibitors will be relieved that their industry is no longer under Presidential assault, but worried about sales in the resulting calm.

As you’d expect from the world’s most popular firearms blog, no less than seven TTAG writers will be walking the floor at the Venetian this year, visiting with 65k of our industry colleagues. We will continue our tradition of “carpet bombing” the site with gun news, holding nothing back for readers who want their gun info fresh and funky. Look for dozens of posts each day.

For exhibiting companies, the “fun” at the Sands Expo and Convention Center is already well under way. Nearly a full week before the opening of the show the big names are already loading in their booths and getting things ready according to the SHOT Show Facebook page.

Once again, thank you for your patronage. We couldn’t do this without your support.

Hopefully I’ll see you at range day. I’ll be one of the many RSOs

    1. avatar Henry Bowman says:

The In an Out burger just off the Strip is going to be swamped….

If you have not had an Animal double double with animal fries you have not lived.

      1. We’re already blessed with In-N-Out Burger here in Austin. Not to mention Whataburger, Shake Shack, Mighty Fine, P. Terry’s, Dan’s, Freddy’s, Five Guys….

      2. avatar Timmy! says:

“Unimpressed” is about the best word I can think of to describe In-N-Out burgers.

  2. avatar Madcapp says:

I respectfully request that you focus your coverage on new innovations, and not rehashed 1911s.

    1. avatar Swilson says:

      Seconded…unless it’s really, really cool.

    2. avatar jwtaylor says:

“new innovations” – if you are talking about the guns themselves, that wouldn’t be much coverage. There isn’t much big innovation in the firearms industry, just lots of small, iterative changes.
After all, the bolt guns are 100 years old, most of the pistols, shotguns, and the AKs are at least 60 years old, and the folding stock suppressed AR SBR with a side charging handle has been around since 1970.

    3. avatar Stinkeye says:

If you exclude the 1911s and YAARs (Yet Another AR), SHOT Show coverage would be one or two posts per day…

  3. avatar Turd Ferguson says:

At the end, how about a tabulated list of all new firearms by caliber?

    Hoping for another 10mm playa…Ruger?

  4. avatar Doktor says:

    Hands in with Magpul!

    Hands off the Hi Points!

Use 1911s as filler on the slow days.

    1. avatar Tim says:

Speaking of Magpul… If one of the TTAG folks happens to stop by the Magpul booth, could you get an official update on the UBR Gen 2 stock? It’s been delayed a few times, and the website now says Spring 2017:

I saw on a forum that it was going to be released for the SHOT show, but you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet!

      1. avatar jwtaylor says:

And believe nothing you hear at SHOT.

      2. avatar Mike Betts says:

“but you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet!” I have that from no less an authority than Abraham Lincoln!

  5. avatar No one of consequence says:

So … Remind me again whose “persona non grata” lists you folks are on? (Seriously. I seem to recall TTAG has, from time to time, been told to buzz off due to some negative reviews….?)

    1. avatar Geoff PR says:

There will be bigger problem keeping the TTAG lads away from the 2017 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo at taking place at the same time at the Hard Coc, er, Hard Rock Cafe…

      1. avatar Curtis in IL says:

I always wondered where all the booth babes came from.

      2. avatar No one of consequence says:

I thought that was the week after…?

        1. avatar Geoff PR says:

It appears you are correct, perhaps last year they were on the same week?

  6. avatar Kapeltam says:

I humbly offer to be flown out and attend if any member of the TTAG staff becomes sick. ?

  7. Can’t wait for the coverage! We couldn’t make it out this year 🙁

  8. avatar Pwinky says:

I enjoy the shot show coverage. It’s interesting and entertaining. And if I’m interested in a 1911 or AR review, I’ll read it. If not I’ll skip it like a normal person instead of complaining about it in the comments. I’d rather complain about the complainers!

  9. avatar Curtis in IL says:

Hey guys, don’t forget to give the shotguns a little love.

Not the ninja tactical black scumbusters. The pretty ones with longer barrels, wooden stocks and choke tubes – used to shoot flying stuff.

    1. avatar ClaystoDust says:

Ditto. Would love to see some info on a few trap guns.

  10. avatar ColdNorth says:

I really like your SHOT shot coverage- last years was educational and fun.

I know it’s a slightly smaller topic, but would you be able to ask any of the folks displaying about their plans for and concerns about the Canadian market? I know we’re not a significant one, but it would be nice to hear about anything upcoming, and also what we should be watching out for (or not, as the case may be). For example, it’s hard to get Winchester Model 70s in any quantity up here, and Ithaca M37s only show up from time to time.

  11. avatar former water walker says:

Sounds like fun! And this year Trump wins and I have a few bucks to spend…

  12. avatar Brandon says:

A stop by the Silencer Co booth would be much appreciated. They have their Saker ASR listed on their website as a replacement for the Saker. The new one has a lower price tag and ships with the ASR mount instead of the MAAD mount, though the MAAD mount is still listed as an optional accessory. I want to know if they have updated the can in any way, or are just moving away from the MAAD mount and standardizing their QD mounts around the ASR system and lowering the prices to try and keep them moving. It looks like that is what they have done, but confirmation would be great.
