Condition white is good for business! For you? Not so much. Stay wary, my friends . . . TripAdvisor’s business practices under review by FTC as more travelers say their warnings of rapes, injuries were blocked

An investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed that TripAdvisor had deleted reports of rapes, blackouts and other injuries and deaths among travelers vacationing in Mexico.

Since then, dozens more people who have traveled around the world have told the Journal Sentinel that TripAdvisor silenced their reports of disturbing, sometimes terrifying experiences.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is about to get a lot of M1911 pistols.

Finally . . . Black Friday for guns: US government to sell M1911 pistols to general public for cheap

A scheme known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program is set to use the amendment to allow the sale of powerful pistols to the general public.

The scheme, which was first set up in 1903, is aimed at promoting firearm safety, but one of the most popular aspects of it is sale of surplus weaponry.

In the 2018 act, the long-standing .45 ACP M1911A1 pistol, a staple of the US military for more than a century, will soon be able to be transferred into the ownership of hundreds of gun owners in the US.

A cache of the guns, which are “no longer actively issued for military service” will be given to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

On top of the M1911A1, the M1911 pistol, the M–1 Garand, and .22 rimfire rifles will all be up for grabs when they are sold in 2018.

Define “effectiveness.” Better yet, quantify it. And then tell me what part of “shall not be infringed” allows limits on lawful firearms purchases . . .  Virginia is still the go-to state for criminals shopping for illegal guns

Virginia had a law on the books for 19 years limiting handgun purchases to one a month, but — despite its effectiveness in curbing the illicit gun trade and appeals from families who lost loved ones in the Virginia Tech mass shooting — it was repealed in 2012 by the Republican-controlled legislature and then-Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R).

Efforts to reinstate this sensible limit have failed, and Virginia is once again one of the largest suppliers of crime guns on the East Coast.

Why are Washington state’s “pot shops” gun-free zones in the first place? . . . Petition wants to allow pot shop workers to carry guns

Tuesday’s shooting has added calls to allow pot shop employees to carry guns to work. Currently, Washington’s Liquor and Cannabis Board bans guns from pot shops. It does not matter if you are an employee or even have a concealed carry permit, guns are not allowed.

A petition is looking to change that. Written just days after Cameron Smith was killed at a Cheney pot shop, it says that pot shop workers have a “God given right” to defend themselves. Cavasier agrees and says guns could have prevented her co-workers from being shot.

D’oh! . . . More Travelers Being Caught With Guns At Airport Checkpoints

The 440 firearms found at airport checkpoints in Florida so far this year has already surpassed the 411 that were found all of last year. Since 2013, the number of guns found by the Transportation Security Administration in the state has increased by 93 percent.

Terrorists? Who, us? . . . Iraqi Militia Indicates Will Hand Heavy Guns to Army After Islamic State Quashed

A prominent Iraqi militia indicated on Thursday it would give any heavy weapons it had to the military once Islamic State was defeated and rejected a proposed U.S. congressional bill designating it a terrorist group.

Harakat Hezbollah al Nujaba, which has about 10,000 fighters, is one of the most important militias in Iraq. Though made up of Iraqis, it is loyal to Iran and is helping Tehran create a supply route through Iraq to Damascus . . .

“The tanks, armored vehicles, and machine guns belong to the army and it is natural that after the battles are over they return to the army,” [Iraqi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya] Rasool told Reuters in an interview.

If that’s the number of guns the Brits intercepted, how many got through? Number of weapons seized at UK ports triples

More than 6,300 guns and associated paraphernalia have been taken by Border Force officers in 2016/17 – a sharp rise from 2,299 in the previous 12 months which included the UK’s biggest ever gun smuggling plot.

  1. Hey can we get a better more in depth article about the CMP 1911s? This is big news. Last I heard this whole thing was dead as a door nail. Is it really happening now or just more bullshit?

      • Before they were replaced in 85 by the m9 the last new batch of 1911a1’s had been delivered in the 1950’s.
When I served the .45s were worn and abused to the point that they were doing good to put a shotgun pattern of holes on a given target.

They were tired and needed to be retired.

        • “Before they were replaced in 85 by the m9 the last new batch of 1911a1’s had been delivered in the 1950’s.”

          Bullshit…

        • For most, it’s nothing that a barrel and bushing replacement won’t fix. Plus the CMP does not sell unserviceable weapons–beat up ones, yes, but all are serviceable.

        • Gomer, look it up. He’s right that the WWII contracts made enough 1911s that the army never needed to buy anymore.

        • The M9 I used in Coaches Course (CMCC) fits that bill. It was worn out, shotgun pattern, I barely qualified as a marksman with it. Officers tend to get issued the nice, unused pistols. Some kids had weapons that wouldn’t even shoot on the right target.

Naturally, the USMC is looking for a replacement right now and may go back to the 1911…

It would seem we are right back to square one.

  2. So who’s worse? ISIS or Hezbollah? I don’t remember ISIS attacking Israel…Americans are chumps arming terrorists. I didn’t see any Israelis cheering on 9/11.

    • Didn’t see Israelis cheering on 9/11? Look up the dancing Israelis. As far as Hezbollah Vs Isis. It is not our concern that Israel has enemies. They are big boys responsible for their own affairs. As far as logic goes, Isis is way worse than Hezbollah by deeds committed. I do like that you bring up the interesting point of Isis attacking everyone except Israel… Strange that Islamists would leave unharmed their purported number one enemy to attack everywhere else around the world. Also strange how Israel pretty much operates as Isis air support at times by bombing Syrian govt forces while leaving Isis untouched as usual.

  3. “The haul comprised of 110 real and 353 imitation firearms, and 5,849 related items such as pepper sprays, gun parts and stun weapons.”

Above is from the original article. 6300 is NOT the number of guns.

    • From CMP’s website:

      11/22/17 – Latest update on the 1911’s…..

Because of the limited number and the exceedingly high demand for the pistol, and the great level of Congressional scrutiny, the Board of Directors will make a decision regarding how sales will be handled. We have no further information at this time. – Mrs. Judith Legerski, Chairman, CMP Board of Directors

  4. I love how the 1911s are “high powered.” Jesus fuck They don’t even take magazines that these idiots would consider high capacity as of now. I mean, in the long run we know that 1 round is too much capacity for them but this is still 2017 and Hillary is (thankfully) not in the white house.

  5. Mexico:

Look, it’s really quite simple: Mexico is a failed state. Full stop.

We should build a wall on the border for no other reason other than this. Mexico is collapsing into anarchy and open warfare between competing criminal syndicates. Unless we’re intending to mount an invasion of the country, cleaning out the endemic corruption in their government and law enforcement, kill the drug cartels (not arrest them, not “bring them to justice” or some other such nonsense, but simply extirpate them), we will suffer for having an open border with Mexico.

Years ago, there was a little flap about a CIA report that projected the fall of the Mexican government by 1999. All the reasons why were correct assessments of the situation then, and their projections moved forward to today are pretty much spot-on, just behind projected schedule.

  6. ANY gun I find under my Christmas tree will be the BEST gun! (Not going to happen, so no use hoping. Wifey has already said–more than once–that I have “enough” guns.)

  7. “Why are Washington state’s “pot shops” gun-free zones in the first place?”

Because government. Because government will inevitably reach the dumbest possible decision on any given issue.

I’ve never gone into a cannabis shop unarmed, and I’ve told every employee I’ve encountered there that I hope they’re armed no matter what the stupid law says. A cash-only business plus employees disarmed by law is a recipe for disaster.

How many lives have our stupid “safety” laws like this cost? (We don’t know what anyone might do in the presence of that awful drug…never mind that we DO know what people will do when there’s money and/or said drug to be had and no one is allowed to prevent people from taking it.) I wonder if any of those laws would really be worth it on a cost/benefit basis — lives and money lost. Not just feels, but actual outcomes.

      • The same argument applies.

When I go to my favorite dinner spot, I amuse myself by repeatedly stepping from one side of the magical line on the floor that separates the bar from the all-ages tables and magically transforming from a lawbreaker to an upstanding citizen and back again, over and over again. Sometimes I straddle the line and ponder the liminal nature of human existence.

My understanding of the pot shop law (though I could be wrong) is that NO firearms are allowed — not even to the owners and employees — whereas the 21+/alcohol restriction applies to patrons, but doesn’t prohibit the owner & employees from defending themselves and their business.

  8. Interesting about the pot shops.

In Colorado those places have armed guards and allow lawful carry. But then so do bars. Hell, you can even have a drink without disarming!

    • Actually, Button’s favorite herbal apothecary has an “No Weapons” policy and a big sign.
And an armed guard who winked and told me I was printing.

  9. Illegal guns in europe. Who would’ve guessed.
The lowest estimations predict 60 million illegal guns across europe based on a survey among the general population and one among criminals. Others that focus on what total amount might have been produced estimate 100-200 million illegal guns.
Germany alone has proof that after the 1972 olympic shooting gun bans they created 18 million illegal guns over night.
Add what is left over from ww1, ww2, east block military surplus, balkan and other civil wars and many other gun bans. And then you can bring anything across the open borders with tge middle east and africa. Yes, europe does have a illegal gun problem. Even if they don’t have the drug gangs to use them all that much.

  10. My observation about TSA is similar to the poster’s observation about the Brits: TSA is finding more guns than ever, but the number of guns being brought to airports, and airplanes, has remained relatively the same. They caught 6300 guns, but how many did they miss? #theillusionofsafety

  11. “…and Virginia is once again one of the largest suppliers of crime guns on the East Coast.”

Wow! The crime rate in Virginia must be absolutely insane!

    What?

    It isn’t?

    But all those guns……

  12. On the TSA’s website it seems that 20%of negligent gun carriers are not loaded at all!
The rest are evenly split between empty chamber, loaded magazine and “locked and loaded” round in chamber
So it looks like half of all negligent armed travelers favor Israeli style carry
No indication of number of travelers who have safety equipped pistols or if they engage a safety
The photos of confiscated pistols looked a lot like typical assortment we see on the pocket dump series here on TTAG
Only one Sig 938, the model I carry!
