TTAG’s raison d’être is to explore the ethics, morality, business, politics, culture, technology, practice, strategy, dangers and fun of guns. But maybe RF left something off of that list: poetry. Srsly? There’s no reason an inanimate tool can’t inspire a few stanzas of verse. They certainly seem to have caught the fancy of poet Maya Angelou. “’I do like to have guns around,’ she told Time’s Belinda Luscombe when asked if she shared her mother’s fondness for firearms. ‘I don’t like to carry them. But I like — if somebody is going to come into my house and I have not put out the welcome mat, I want to stop them.'” We can relate. Other than that carrying part, but to each her own. Anyway, she’s even used one in a defensive situation . . .

“I was in my house in North Carolina. It was fall. I heard someone walking on the leaves. And somebody actually turned the knob. So I said, “Stand four feet back because I’m going to shoot now!” Boom! Boom! The police came by and said, ‘Ms. Angelou, the shots came from inside the house.’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t know how that happened.’”

Sounds like someone who makes her living crafting words into art has learned when it’s best to STFU.

  1. Shooting through a closed door at an unseen target? Sounds like somebody’s been giving the Vice President self-defense tips…

  2. The quality of mercy is not strained, it runneth like the belt of a Browning 50 cal, What! I thought it was beautiful, Randy

  3. Every time you guys (or the SAF) point out an article in that moonie-owned rag I feel like we lose a bit of credibility.

  4. I think non-gun owners are always shocked that older folks choose to own a gun. As if they couldn’t conceive of the logic that yes, old people need protection too, and cheesy infomercials for emergency aid devices like HELP! I’VE FALLEN AND I CAN’T GET UP aren’t exactly ideal in every situation.

    • Everybody who doesn’t own a gun wants one. The ones who say they don’t are liars. It’s only the ones who don’t own guns who don’t want anybody else to have them.

      We need more gun owners.

    • This is why the AR, chambered in 5.56mm, is ideal for home defense for those of the chronologically enhanced persuasion.
Unfortunately, my mother don’t really hanker to shootin’ irons too much, which is a pity. As she and her dyed-in-the-wool Democrat retired school teacher are getting older, they sure could use something for home and personal protection, but they won’t hear of it.

      • It’s their freedom to choose. You may not agree, I may not agree, but it is still their choice.

Isn’t that what we are standing up for here?

        • Ding! Ding! Ding!

One is free to defend one’s self and own with whatever Constitutionally protected tools one may wish.

If you believe the Louisville Slugger is your best bet, (and let’s be statistical, for most it’ll work fine as they’ll never need it) you are perfectly within your rights to make that choice. If someone else believes their ‘hood be a bit more “sketchy” and sees they need an AR/AK whatever, that too is a Constitutionally protected right.

    • Those commercials arent cheesy, and there are plenty of old people who are like that. In half a hour I’m leaving to pick my 92 year old grandmother from the hospital for the third time this month, because she fell yet again.

  5. Constitution whittled away,
And they blame the rich but now make us pay,
    While spinning out thin air,
    So empty is their chair,
Get off of my lawn or make my day.

  6. Didn’t happen. Won’t pass mikeyb’s requirement for a body and 6 boxes of paperwork to prove it. After all, how much credibility could Maya Angelou have? At least for hypocrits like the anti’s.

    • Well. Ahem. She DID read at Obama’s inaugural inauguration. As opposed to his perpetual inauguration. So there’s THAT.

        • More likely she was used and discarded because she was no longer viewed as a valuable commodity in the furtherance of the Democrat cause.

Isn’t it all just one big powerpoint production.

    • Actually, a very good strategy unless you are a pro gunner who lives in a guilty until proven innocent slave state.

  7. I said, ‘Well, I don’t know how that happened.’”

STFU is very different from what she did. In IL (and presumably other states) she committed Obstruction of Justice, which is a felony, when she lied and said ‘I don’t know what happened’, rather than ‘I would like to exercise my right to privacy’, or ‘talk with my attorney’.
