“Nearly 100,000 Americans are killed or injured in gun violence every year,” The Joyce Foundation’s website proclaims. “This inflicts a heavy toll on families and communities. The Joyce Foundation works with law enforcement, policy makers and advocates to develop common sense gun violence reduction and prevention policies that keep our communities safe.” Yes, well, “works with” as in funds. “Common sense gun violence reduction” as in civilian disarmament. “Advocates” as in The Atlantic. To wit, this underneath their post Is There Such a Thing as a Safe Gun? Not Really . . .

This article is part of our With Great Power project, which is supported by a grant from the Joyce Foundation.

I can find no mention of the Foundation’s WGP project. I wonder how many other anti-gun rights articles are funded by this initiative, given that the Foundation has $950m in assets and gives out $45m in grants every year. Also note this:

Since 1993, the Joyce Foundation has paid grants totaling over $54 million to over 100 anti-gun groups. The Joyce Foundation has given over $4 million to the Violence Policy Center, which supports an outright ban on handguns and semiautomatic assault weapons.

Shame on The Atlantic and every other nominally journalistic enterprise for taking Joyce Foundation money — and not reporting it.

  1. The idiocy never stops!
As many of you know, Washington State Rep Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver introduced a rather expansive “assault weapon” ban. Well poor Jim! He said in a phone interview that his office has received hundreds of phone calls and some death threats over his proposed legislation. Isn’t that a heart-breaker! I don’t know about everyone else, but that calls for a moment of silence. Times up.

  2. The NGO’s, non-governmental organizations, are mostly progressive and statist, (but I repeat myself) in intent.

They push the international socialist agenda. Which is to attack individual liberty and a sense of national identity, in our case, the pride of being an american.

America is still one of the last nations that stand in the way of a one world government. But they are working over time to correct that. And the progressives/statists are their foot soldiers.

    • Not very often you see somebody spell out the big picture in TTAG comments. Many people say, “Oh these politicians are so dumb” or “These paper pushers just don’t get it”. All these progressive politicians (and some Republicans) are not stupid, they “get it”. They know exactly what they are doing and things that might look stupid to an outsider are mostly well planned and coordinated moves by the ruling class.

  3. Maybe I read it wrong, but I’ll say it anyway–it’s apparently The Atlantic’s “With Great Power” project, not The Joyce Foundation’s. Maybe that’s why it can’t be found at the Foundation.

  4. I thought the Joyce Foundation was a non profit. It’s possible they’re in violation of their not for profit status. Kind of a grey area it seems.

I would actually like to see someone put together a piece that shows the true lobbying power of the anti gun lobby since the MSM wants to go on so much about the NRA’s lobbying power.

  5. Liberals think that if you do away with certain things in a society, that society will get better. We need to get rid of the White man first,we’ll start with the liberal White man and see how things work out.

    • This brings up a critical question. Does the First Amendment protect speech that advocates for the destruction of the United States of America? We frequently say that you cannot use one right to infringe another right. If I cannot legally use the Second Amendment to prevent someone from exercising the First Amendment, how can someone legally use the First Amendment to prevent someone from exercising the Second Amendment?

  6. When are we going to start calling these people out on funding this stuff? Imagine the outrage on the Left if the Doris Duke Foundation gave the NRA half a million to fund a study on protecting 2nd Amendment rights or if the Ford Foundation funded Eddy Eagle for Detroit school children. We need to boycott companies that give them money to take our rights away.

  7. It is The Atlantic’s “With Great Power” project, and it currently consists of these articles:

    • That would be a sea change for them Ralph…does anyone read this dead tree rag or is it mainly interwebz now?

  8. “Nearly 100,000 people are harmed in the us each year by violence done with guns. That’s a tiny contribution to the (number, anybody?) harmed by violence of all kinds.

Clearly we have a violencd problem which our foundation works tirelessly to address, through diversion programs, personal defense.provrams, effective policing, mental health, organized crime (esp drug cartels) interdiction, and terrorism abatement.”

    There. Fixed it for them.

    • They’re using an old, old ploy. “Harmed” can mean anything they want it to mean but they want the public to think they’re talking about people being shot.

  9. Anybody else take a look at the history of Joyce?
It was founded by a nice old lady for the purpose of improving quality of life in the great lakes region.
During her lifetime, she mainly gave grants to hospitals.
As soon as her body was safely in the ground and the bulk of her assets transferred to the foundation, the foundation’s board decided that the best way to improve quality of life was through socialist political activism, not through building and equipping hospitals.

Methinks the poor woman’s been spinning in her grave since the 1970s.
And as long as the board members are ‘community organizers’ like Barack Obama and worse, that’s the way it will always be.

  10. Quite honestly, the best thing that could happen to this country, was anything that inflicts a heavy toll on “communities”, which is little more than an acronym for “busybody careerist meddlers and government apologists claiming to speak for anyone but their egocentric selves” by now.

  11. And here I thought the “With Great Power” project was a series of investigative articles about Spiderman. So disappointed…

  12. The Joyce Foundation funded young Obama, and has funded a Department Chair for Dr Wintermute, at UC Davis. There is a long history of gun control under the radar there.
