You know the people that come out work on fiber optic cables?  Including the ones that come out and fix things when idiots cut fiber optic cables in their personal “hold my beer and watch this” moments (usually with heavy equipment)?  Well, I think Russell‘s that guy.  And he sends his EDC “Every Day Fiber Optic Field Carry” via Everyday Carry.

He writes, between working on those darn cables:

I spend 75% of my day outside, from publicly crowded spaces to remote back country towers and windmills. Wherever Fiber Optic service is required. I keep a simple load out with an emphasis on being able to cut, pry, bend and manipulate a variety of things both on the the ground and in the air. I believe in protecting myself and others around me if I can and rely on a Sig P365 to do so.

Good choice in guns, Russell.

But my gosh:  You’re in all sorts of places from holes to windmills to probably crawlspaces and other odd-ball places and you don’t carry a frickin’ flashlight?  C’mon.  This isn’t the MagLite era, my brother.

Congrats on the year of sobriety.  Really.  Good deal.

  1. I expect he has a separate kit for his tools, including a flashlight or 2. Toolbelt or bag or some such for his actual job related bits and pieces.

  2. Handed a p2x fury to one of these guys the other night. He was doing a splice in my Pipeline right of way at midnight with just a cheap portable light. No go….

  3. What is your fetish with flashlights? Geez, you remind me of the mutants in The Planet of The Apes that worshipped the nuclear tipped ICBM. You are the children of the flashlight, Maybe we can have a flashlight show and tell and maybe mix it up now and then with a tacticool knife sharing. Oh, did I tell you about my new Olight Raider. It is so handsome and what a deal, I got it for 40% off. 200 lumens, my my. I just have to have it with me where ever I go. I feel completely naked without it, don’t you know. My my!
The guy is a tech, I’m sure the guys got one in his tool box.

    • JB must cram a flashlight in his buttocks and hope to see light out his pee hole.. weird flashlight fetish.. to each their own

    • There’s a saying that “In the darkness a man with a flashlight is King”.

That statement has been revised by some to be “In the darkness a man with a flashlight is King but a man with NODS is God”.

Some prankster revised that further to “In the darkness a Man with a flashlight is King but a man with NODS is God until the guy with the flashlight puts the beam on the NODS guy’s face. The NODs guy thinks he just saw God.”.

Take from that what you will.

  4. As a guy who did this job for sometime when I left the Navy, he does carry a few lights on his work belt. He also has a few headlamps as well. We work our asses off for a little money. Surprised he can even afford the gun.

  5. hey john,
“But my gosh: You’re in all sorts of places from holes to windmills to probably crawlspaces and other odd-ball places and you don’t carry a frickin’ flashlight? ”

its called a ‘toolbelt’ wear ‘tools’ go??? I know its hard sometimes.

I did nearly the same job and my flashlights or several types of lights on my ‘toolbelt’ or in ‘toolbox’ ….

  6. No EDC flashlight, but we have a quality holster with a lot of adjustable cant and ride height. I assume the spare mag sits in the left front pocket, better than not having it. The chip looks aged, keep it up brother!

  7. “I spend 75% of my day outside, from publicly crowded spaces to remote back country towers and windmills.”

Fiber backhaul is needed on windmills…

    Why?

    • The IoT (internet of things)

Recently our disposal facility purchased a new cardboard baler. It’s now connected to our network, why I don’t know.

I’m just waiting for SkyNet to kill us all.

  8. Who needs a flashlight when you blackout yourself?

No, seriously, good job on the year I guess but when an AA meeting lets out the closet bar takes a beating.

…Which is kinda understandable if you’ve ever had to sit through an AA/NA/SA/CA meeting. Christ I hated chaperoning people to those things.

    • they do some good. tough row to hoe alone.
but there’s always opportunistic jagoffs that are only there to supply.

  9. To the light haters. You don’t want to carry a light? Don’t carry one. Just feel around in those dark places with your hands.

    • got it. shotties are for birds and lepus. handguns are useless and ars are for girls.
      seriously, every post?
a torch aids vision in poor lighting situations.
      not caring means not caring.
~you~ want to carry a light ~you~ go ahead.

  10. Jr, I never said handguns are useless. I carry one everyday. A condition 1 1911 is at hand as I type this. I certainly would never give an AR to a woman. I think more of fair sex than to do something like that. Yeah, every post because the same topics keep coming up. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. I don’t care.

  11. Help, please. Is there any way to UNSUBSCRIBE from the EDC feature without completely unsubscribing from TTAG articles? I couldn’t care less what someone carries in their pocket. Complete waste of heartbeats in my world.
