That Wouldn’t Have Happened if He Carried a Glock 7

When I was taken to the local ER recently, suffering pain that felt like someone had inserted a Visegrips into the innards on my right side and was steadily twisting, the medical pros diagnosed the problem as kidney stones. And they took a nice commemorative photo of the little bastards by passing me through a CT scanner after administering some wonderful chemical assistance so I could stop writhing and lay still long enough to complete the test. Even through my drug-addled haze, I noticed all of the signs warning of a strong magnetic field as they wheeled me into the room with the big doughnut. Unfortunately, one Chicago cop wasn’t as observant . . .

After a report of a robbery at a local medical facility, the cop in question was apparently there doing a little old fashioned police work, snooping around to see what’s what. We get the lowdown on the LEO from policeoracle.com:

When an investigating officer stepped into an MRI room at the medical centre in East St. Charles Road, the powerful scanning machine pulled his gun away and fixed it on to the medical device.

Because of the danger of having an uncontrollable weapon in the office and the fact the magnetism could not be shut off, the building was cordoned off and no-one was allowed to enter.

I’d have paid cash money to watch them pry that (loaded) heater off of a 2-ton magnet.

  1. Good thing he didn’t have a pet dog. They would have shot it. Alot of raids seem to result in the death of a beloved pet.

  2. 2. Criminals adapt to the weapons available. Banning semi auto rifles does not mean the 20-50 people a year that died by these rifles would not have been killed by another type of firearm or weapon.

  3. The MRI would have to have been turned off in order to retrieve the weapon. And, it takes hours to restart. Shutting down an MRI is not taken lightly and is costly too.

  4. Should some idiot newbie wheel an oxygen tank into the room, the healthy thing to do is NOT to be between the tank and the MRI. Just sayin’,,,,

It’s not too good for the MRI, but it’s damn unpleasant for you. Momentarily, that is.

  5. The FBI Crime Report (Table 20 – Weapons) for 2011 shows about 2 ¼ times more murders were committed by means of “hands and feet” than by “rifles”.

Limiting the definition of “rifles” to so-called “semi-automatic assault rifles” (a gross misnomer) would increase the ratio still further.

We are being told that we need a return of the senseless AWB because . . .?

  6. I own a MR1 Comfortech it is a sweet piece. I’ve never been that big of an AR platform person even though I use them a lot (Hooah). It shoulders great and putting rounds on target all the way from “in your face” distance to 100 plus yards is way too easy. The accuracy is exceptional considering the somewhat thin appearing and short barrel. Several reviews say that it is accurate to only 2-2.5 MOA WITH .223 cal. Using 5.56 NATO this carbine shoots 1-2 MOA consistently with a hot barrel. This rifle is chambered for and can fire 5.56 NATO which I use all the time. My boys love their ARs but they also love my MR1. Its fun and amazingly comfortable to shoot and it never EVER JAMS unless you use crap magazines, but that’s with any gun. Cleaning is a breeze and takes at most half an hour. I’m not saying that its the perfect rifle ( high MSRP of $1469 but I got mine for $1200,minimum level of customization, throws brass all over and not the most scope friendly) but it is a sure keeper. It is NOT a top line hunting rifle. It is built as durable and reliable defensive carbine and it fulfills that role exceptionally.

  7. A 1.5 Tesla coil can bend street signs outside the building (over time). There are signs warning people about entering the room with metal items.
That said, Glocks still have to have a metal barrel, don’t they?….

  8. Bravo Robert – yet another Brit bashing thread. As a regular visitor to TTAG, it saddens me that you consistently resort to such gross generalisations about another culture. Brits hate Americans with guns: “Because they’re elitists”. What rubbish.

As you may have gathered I’m a Brit, I’m also a gun owner (in the UK itself no less!) and a regular shooter. I enjoy the vast majority of TTAG’s content and read practically every post. I usually try to ignore those which focus on drawing a distinction between our two cultures based on stereotypes, and sometimes, flat out name calling.

Believe it or not, there still exists a very active shooting scene here in the UK. Yes we have our fair share of detractors and anti’s – but these types of people also exist in the US. I have no problem with you using the UK as a cautionary reminder of what can occur to shooters when a government oversteps its remit and passes overly restrictive gun legislation. Just 30 years ago we could own a broadly similar range of firearms as you currently can. Now this diversity has been severely curtailed.

Not all British people are sheep, not all Americans support the second amendment – there are people in every society with whom you will not agree, some with whom you will never be able to see eye to eye. Derogatory articles such as this do nothing but stir up casual racism amongst some of your readership – as evidenced in several of the comments above. Please Robert – lay off the Brit bashing, there are surely better, more productive articles to write. I look forward to reading them.

  9. Is a Glock 7 the new all plastic handgun from Glock? Plastic barrel, plastic sear, plastic slide, plastic springs, and plastic firing pin? Where can I get a Glock 7?

  10. I don’t mind at all, provided that the “Close” or “X” is easy to click and in the RIGHT, TOP CORNER (i.e. I don’t have to search around the ad for it).

Those who complain about ads on FREE media are victims of our public education system over the past few decades that fails to teach basic economics.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH. If you don’t want ads, be prepared to pay for a subscription. If you don’t want to pay for a subscription, shut up and deal with ads.

  11. I’ve had two MRIs. The technician was wearing all kinds of metal objects when he was strapping me in the machine and getting things aligned. Nothing flew out of his pockets on to the machine. The magnetic field did not engage until the technician started the MRI process.

In the “incident” reported here, the officer would have had the firearm in a secure holster. The MRI machine will not pull a gun out of a holster just walking into the suite. You would need to be close to the machine and it would need to be active. The report also talks about a doctors office and then a medical center. The MRI machine is an large and expensive machine. It would not be in a doctors office even if the doctors office was in the medical center. It would be in a seperate part of the medical center. The report also says the doctors office/medical center is on East St. Charles Road in Chicago. I can find no medical center or doctors office on East St. Charles Road. I call BS on this report.

The ND incident on ajronline.org is more plausible because the person was on the table and the device was activated.

    • I’ve had so many MRIs that the clicking and buzzing of the machine doing its work just lulls me right to sleep. If they weren’t so expensive to run, I might go lay in one just to relax. Getting injected with contrast can be a mite stressful, though…maybe I could get them to skip that part.

They’ll let you keep rings on, as a circular object isn’t subject to any pull when it’s inside the magnetic field (I dunno why). Belt buckles are also okay, although sometimes you can feel the magnetic field tugging on it. The techs have told me that most small metal jewelry items are okay to wear as long as they’re not prone to falling off, although the magnetic field can generate electric currents in some things, making them uncomfortably hot.

Having a gun attached to the machine sure would be awkward… Maybe they could just leave it there. The magnet’s always on and the gun ain’t going nowhere.

  12. Tree better than truck in this case. It covers you head to toe. Too many people grew up believing sheetmetal stopped .223 and .308s by watching A-Team.

I have layers of 3/8 plate in my backstop with a
dry firewood stacked in front of it. After placing 15 rounds inside a nickel from 100 yds with my 223, I cut though the whole backstop. Really puts cover and concealment in perspective.

  14. How does this work? A fence sitter on this issue would say:

You know what, I think the Second Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms are good ideas, but after hearing Ted Nugent on the subject, I don’t think so anymore. Any constitutional amendment with this man as a spokesman should be abolished and the populace disarmed.

If the above synopsis is correct, then our society is in about as bad a shape as I thought.

    1) You are innocent until proven guilty… in a court of law. However, you are presumed guilty until your trial. That is why you are arrested, held, charged, maybe released on bail, etc…
    2) Cops attempting to storm the house had been shot at (and killed) by Dorner. Why storm the house again, risk another cop’s life, just to shoot (and kill) Dorner?
    3) Dorner could have stopped the pursuit at any time by simply surrendering. He could have walked up to a news crew waving a white flag.
    4) The owner of the cabin was in contact with the police, and maybe gave their permission to demolish it.
    5) After the fire started, Dorner still could have walked out and surrendered.

I have no sympathy for Dorner. He chose the sword FIRST, and he got what he deserved.

  18. Agreed that you probably had a CT….I just went through the same experience with the stones…not pleasant.

My last MRI I was told to keep my wedding ring on. While in the machine, I could feel it vibrating, I thought it was my imagination, but I could see it moving. A little disheartening. They also make you sign a waiver stating that you don’t have any metal, such as shrapnel, etc. in your body. I has previously had a metal shaving removed from my eye, when I informed the tech, they required an x-ray to verify it was gone. I imagine having a metal sliver pulled from one’s eye through the back of the head to be unpleasant.

And this is why I dropped the extra coin to get the trust, not to mention all the other benefits of having one.

Isn’t that unnecessarily devisive? I mean, couldn’t that get Obama worshipers to knee-jerk react negatively to the add and ignore any of the rationality of it?
