Employees at Ellis Home & Garden in Texarkana did the state of Texas proud Sunday night when their store was targeted by an armed criminal. It was a little after 8:00 p.m. and the employees were closing up when 25-year-old Brandon Staggs slipped in through an unlocked door holding a shotgun.
Two employees, both in the store’s back office, saw Staggs on the store’s surveillance camera. Armed with a shotgun, Staggs approached the employees and attempted to rob them.
The two employees fought back and wrestled the shotgun away from Staggs. One of the employees had a concealed handgun license and fired two shots during the struggle. Although neither of the rounds hit anyone, the employees succeeded in subduing Staggs and restraining him long enough to call 9-1-1 and hand him over to police.
Upon arrival, officers also found 34-year-old Toni Works waiting for Staggs in a getaway car in the parking lot. Both were charged with aggravated robbery and taken to the Bi-State Jail. The bail was set at $100,000.
For our part, we congratulate the employees on a job well done and celebrate Ellis’ sensible gun policies for their employees, which may have saved two lives.

It’s too bad government workers called School teachers are not allowed to carry if they choose to. Like they can for certain civilian employers.

Why is bail even given to someone who used a shotgun to steal money? It seems obvious the dude won’t come up with the $ for bail. But if he did, he seems a very good candidate to do it again, and this time guns blazing.

10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections should do them well and also prevent them from polluting the gene pool further.
Way back in the 70s I was motoring across Texas when I passed a prison farm with work gang in the fields. It was hot as hell and there was no shade. Around the outside of the field were guards mounted on horses and rocking shotguns. Looked like some ‘cool hand luke’ shit.
I was impressed.
I remember seeing a documentary about US prisons and one episode was the Angola prison. It did not look pleasant. And the armed guards on horseback were actually trustees.
Saw an old episode of Gunsmoke the other day. Marshall Dillon had thrown a bad guy in jail and the bad guy was complaining that the cot was uncomfortable. The reply was of course it’s uncomfortable, this is a jail.

Well, if they are climbing roses I suggest fencing them with a nice redwood lattice so they have a place to climb. Otherwise, just about any kind of fencing, provided it is tall enough, will keep them protected from dogs and some other small critters. Deer will still be a problem, though, they can jump just about any fence small enough that you would use it around a rose garden.

That’s pretty scary wrestling someone over a shotgun. Sounds like it was near or after closing time? I probably would have just barricaded myself in that backroom with my self-defense side arm trained on the door while my coworker handled the 911 call.

#1: Don’t bring a pistol to a shotgun fight.
#2: Just avoid shotgun fights if at all possible.
